We have returned to the 21st Century after an Internet meltdown on the Lehigh campus.
It took Lehigh just 3 plays to score on a short Sean Farrell run after the opening kickoff, set up by a good return and Keith Sherman's 48-yard run.
Lehigh 7, Georgetown 0 with less than 6 minutes left in the first period.
Mr. C

Lehigh just converted a fourth and one on a Sherman smash to move to the GU 39 with 4:43 left in the first period.
Mr. C

Sherman is running all over Georgetown's defense. First down to the GU 11 after a big run. Sherman would have scored on the play, but for a bad cut to the inside, instead of bouncing it outside earlier.

False start where almost ALL 11 players were not set before the snap and then a near safety as QB Kyle Nolan used all of his strength to extract himself from the end zone. Lehigh's ball again after a punt and return to the GU 32.

Georgetown is doing a pretty good job of stepping on its own throat in this one.

Pass Interference penalty on the Mountain Hawks gives Georgetown a first down at the LU 49. 1st time in Lehigh territory for the Hoyas. 1st down run to the 45 for 4 yards.

False start for the beleaguered Hoyas. 3rd and goal from the 7.
Mr. C
October 19th, 2013, 01:25 PM
Misread for the GU QB. He went incomplete on the fade when he had a receiver open on a slat for a TD on the other side.
Field goal from 23 yards by the Hoyas makes it Lehigh 21, Georgetown 3 with 10:35 left in the second quarter.

Why would you kick a FG there? I mean seriously?
Because that was about the only chance the Hoyas had at scoring. This team has really struggled offensively.

Jet tempo for Lehigh on the spread and a long pass gives the Hawks a first down at the GU 40, followed by a run to the 31 and a pass to the 23 for another first down.

Lehigh has looked sharp and is hitting hard on defense. But Georgetown is terribly overmatched. Ugly to think about what will happen to Georgetown when the scholarships kick in fully at Lehigh and other Patriot League schools. Hate to think about how lopsided the Georgetown-Fordham game will be.

The second team was in midway throughout the 3rd qtr. Lehigh packed it in on both offense and defense at that point. I agree with DFW. This game was the first LU game in a while where they dominated a team that they should dominate.

It's telling that the most compelling storyline in the second half was whether freshman QB Nick Shafnisky would get some snaps. Instead, wildcat QB Matt McHale led the second-team O.

I'm pleasantly surprised the crowd was that large.
I'm visiting the parents this weekend and could have attended the Lehigh/Georgetown game, but because I've seen that matchup the last two times it's occurred in DC (2010, 2012) and figured it may not be that competitive of a game, I passed. I attended the Division II East Stroudsburg/Bloomsburg game at ESU instead. Bloomsburg, which is ranked in the D2 top 10, won an exciting game 52-38. (The game was tied 38-38 early in the 4th quarter, and although East Stroudsburg never led, they also never trailed by more than 14 points. Bloomsburg was finally able to deliver the knockout blow with a couple minutes left in the game.)

I agree, the crowd seemed in the 10-11,000 range, but still a great game for Lehigh to do the job it was expected to do. Andy stepped off the gas after the last TD. A lot of sophs and even some frosh saw time today. Bialkowski could have had 400 yards passing and Sherman 200 running and Kurfis another 100+yard day. Hoya QB did an admirable job considering lack of experience. He has good size. Campanella is an excellent back but that's about where it stops. Nice to see Pandy get a shot at long FG and convert. He hit one from 55 yards at halftime warmups. Fernandez-Soto out for at least until Holy Cross with hamstring, and Knott is out for the season with a fx collarbone suffered last play at Columbia. Nice to see Cody Haupt get some carries. I would have him running ahead of Sodeke. He hits the hole quicker. The OL was all sophs and freshman in the fourth quarter. A nice 'feel good' game, but with Bucknell knocking off Dartmouth today, in Hanover, all of a sudden next week seems a little more serious than we thought.

Columbia gave Penn a headache for 45 minutes today.
The Princeton-UNH-Fordham run should pay dividends in November. That might prove be Lehigh's toughest three game stretch in the last 25+ years. 2-1 was a great accomplishment. 3-0 is needed against HC, Gate and LC....
I think Lafayette will be LU's toughest game. Defense and law of averages. LU will be looking to pillage Hamilton, NY...

After wondering at halftime of the CCSU game whether we'd have a win on the season after that stretch, I agree that 2-1 was a great accomplishment. Most of us would have expected 1 win and a couple close losses, following this year's start.
Performance at Columbia should prove to be an aberration. Slow starts and second half collapses have become commonplace the past two years, but complete game no-shows don't happen. Columbia managed just 118 yards and FOUR first downs today against the Quakers. Penn gave themselves the headaches, committing 105 yards in penalties. The Lions are young, undersized, banged up, and low on talent. They may not come with 2 touchdowns of anyone all season.

The annual Georgetown game is one I just can't get excited about. They ( I'm generalizing here) just don't seem to care about FB. However, I thought their guys played hard, and never quit. Much more polished than Columbia. I just wish the school would make the commitment!!

CCSU and Columbia fit the bill, but this year's OOC schedule was respectable going in. UNH is a perennial playoff team from the CAA and looks like they may actually be back in again this year after yesterday's gutsy win against top-10 Villanova. Princeton is rolling over everyone after losing to Lehigh, and looks to be the favorite to win the Ivy outright, potentially finishing 9-1. Monmouth would have been a contender for the NEC title this year, had they not switched conferences and become an FCS independent. That's 3 potential league champions that were scheduled, 2 of which were road games.
The point is, you can't determine what your opponents' records will be. You can only predict their success based upon past results. I feel we did a good job scheduling this year compared to some recent seasons. Big South and SoCon teams schedule an SEC/ACC beatdown and then return the favor by slaughtering weak D-2 programs that make Grambling look like Oregon. Some Big Sky teams schedule 2 D-2 games.
