CHARLOTTE, N.C. (www.BigSouthSports.com) – Coastal Carolina running back Lorenzo Taliaferro (Yorktown, Va.) has been named the Choice Hotels Big South Football Offensive Player of the Week, while Chanticleers’ linebacker Quinn Backus (Greenwood, S.C.) has been selected as Defensive Player of the Week for games played the seventh week of the regular-season. Charleston Southern punter Truett Burns (Clinton, S.C.) is the Special Teams Player of the Week and Buccaneers’ quarterback Daniel Croghan III (Charleston, S.C.) is The Crons Brand Freshman of the Week.
Taliaferro rushed for 144 yards and three touchdowns in Coastal’s 42-7 win over Gardner-Webb. He also caught four passes for 23 yards to finish with 167 all-purpose yards. Taliaferro averaged 6.0 yards per rush and seven of his carries went for either a score or a first down. He scored on runs of 4, 2 and 13 yards to tie the Big South single-season record with his third 3-touchdown game of the season.
Backus tallied 11 tackles (five solo, six assisted) with an assisted tackle-for-loss, an interception return for a touchdown and two additional pass break-ups in leading the Chanticleer defense. His pick-six was a 73-yard return that gave Coastal a 14-0 lead in the first quarter, while eight of his stops came in the second half as CCU shutout Gardner-Webb the final 30 minutes. Backus also assisted on a one-yard tackle-for-loss on a third-and-goal situation.
Burns averaged 39.0 yards on his four punts at VMI with a long of 48, and he pinned the Keydets inside their 20-yard line three times, causing VMI to start drives at the 1, 11 and 15-yard lines.
Croghan was 18-of-27 passing for 245 yards and two touchdowns in his second career start at quarterback. He also rushed for 30 yards to finish the day with 275 yards of offense. He connected on a 27-yard pass to Kevin Glears to give the Bucs an early 7-0 lead, and later found Larry Jones III for 48 yards and the go-ahead score late in the third quarter to put CSU back ahead, 22-17. Croghan’s yardage was the most by a CSU quarterback since November 2011.
