View Full Version : NDSU @ GSU

I dont know much about NDSU, other than they are a pretty solid team. I know they have been very successful in DII, and have made a good transition to I-AA.
GSU, on the other hand, is still trying to find itself. We have yet to play a complete game, and have a tendency to start strong, and finish poorly (exception being the CCSU game). Our offense is coming together, with our biggest problem being conservative playcalling once we get the lead (GSU fans are used to putting teams away once we get up on them).
Our defensive secondary has been our weakness this year, and has been challenged the past two weekends by pretty good receivers and qb's. They have been able to step up to the challenge, recording 5 INT's, however, they havent been able to do it for a complete game.
So, this weekend should be a real test for our team. Luckily, we get NDSU at home, so that gives us a slight advantage, but I am still not sure of how GSU will be able to perform against a very solid team.
Predictions/thoughts?

But I hope to get up to Statesboro and catch this outstanding game between two historically strong teams.

Paulson may be Georgia Southern's only advantage in this game.
NDSU whipped SDSU last year pretty good. Georgia Southern put up a lot of points against SDSU but It was a closer game.
I think NDSU is the better team this year and possibly last year. but I believe the game might be closer than normal because Georgia Southern knows it needs to win. If GSU loses this one their only playoff hope is the autobid and that is not going to be easy.

Close match-ups by talented teams usually turn on the turn-over margin. UC-Davis vs YSU was a good example. The four Davis turnover difference led to 14 pts by YSU, and that was about the margin of YSU victory.

I am very excited for this game. What an opportunity for the Bison to be able to play on the Holy Grail of I-AA stadiums/programs. There is fierce respect for Ga Southern from us Bison. The programs also have many parallels. Ga So won 6 titles running the option in I-AA while the Bison won 8 titles running the option in DII. We consider ourselves your "little brother". Let's just hope that little brother can grow up a bit this wknd. Best of luck to the Eagles and it is an honor to be playing you. xsmileyclapx

I'm really looking forward to this game. I know they have a good run D but I seriously doubt they will have seen anyone with our weapons on the ground. The trip-O is gone, not the running attack:hurray: I have full confidence in the O. The Defense and special teams is what really worries me (heck all Southern fans). I'm not as scared as I was about special teams...still very worried though. Our D just needs to develop confidence and congeal more. We've defiantley got the speed to be great. I expect a very close game. Of course it will come down to big plays (Our D's biggest problem) and turnovers which we have been very good with as of late. Their O really scares me. I'm excited, look forward to meeting the NDSU fans that make it. Cheers gentleman,

NDSU is a very quality team with lots of firepower. The Eagle fans are expecting a Bison team loaded for bear.
They have seen from the CCSU game that the mystic powers of Paulson have gone into remission.
I am not going to predict this game. I will say that the defense of both teams will decide the victor.
BTW, any Bison fan coming to Statesboro needs to drop by the RED FLAG tailgate for a little Southern hospitality.

Stang Fever:
When the new coach (BVG) was hired I don't think 1% of GSU fans thought he would "throw out the baby with the dishwater" and abandon the offense that "was" GSU, and had brought so much success to our football program..
However, BVG came to town, the new "Sheriff" with a vision of his own for GSU football.... You are correct in that we are indeed "sleeping" with our decision, but surprisingly, (because I AM a big 3/0 fan) I'm beginning to think his vision might not be all that bad.
Do I wish we still had the 3/0? Yep. I think the defense, passing game, player discipline and conditioning, (and grades) were deficient and needed help, but the offense, triple option, was clicking along just fine..
I wish BVG had improved the areas of weakness and left the traditional 3/0 alone, but he has other plans for GSU..
BVG's star in the coaching world is strictly dependent on whether he can produce wins and a quality program at GSU. If he suceeds and GSU once again becomes a powerhouse in 1AA we all win. If he fails, then his personal coaching star, and potential income will be in jepardy.
So, BVG's here to win..
I do think this season and perhaps next will be periods of change and adjustment for GSU football, but surprisingly I think when we turn the corner we WILL be a powerhouse.
Win or lose we are basically just GSU fans. We hate to lose, we love to win, but we are first and foremost fans of GSU football.
But - Winning is more fun.... Losing sucks..
Best Wishes,

The subject of North Dakota State came up with several of the Appalachian State coaches earlier this season and they remembered seeing the Bison on film last season during the playoffs. They were unanimous in their opinion that NDSU was one of the best and toughest teams they saw last year on film. They were very impressed with the Bison.

I've read all about the Bison, and I KNOW this is gonna be a "bring your lunch" day for our Eagles this coming Saturday...
Our Eagles seem to be improving with each game, but I'm not sure our guys have the maturity and experience at this stage of the season to hang with the Bison..
But..
Hope springs eternal.
If the Bison win I personally plan to spew the "well, we knew how good the Bison were" and "wow" what an honor it was just to be on the same field with you guys, and all that other crap.
If the Eagles win I personally plan to have a small bottled coke w/peanuts in it to celebrate, (not a big-timer here), and thank our lucky stars that we eked out a win.
If you beat us, we were beaten by a better team. From your reputation and past game results in the new season there is no doubt that "on paper" it's gonna be a long day for our Eagles.
Our record so far this season has been l o u s y.... But, a little improvement has shined thru with each new game, so maybe we won't be embarrassed by the Bison.

This one is going to be close and the Bison will win. Coach Bohl has called a very conservative season and I believe the Bison have huge untapped potential. We can score almost at will with the deep ball. We have'nt seen the deep ball except when playing from behind or at the end of the half. If we would have the killer instinct with the lead this could be a double digit loss for GSU.

Rule 1: Until further notice because of the weakness of the GSU Eagle secondary defense VISITING* teams will not be allowed to "throw deep"** unless they are three touchdowns or more behind. Even then the visiting team will only be allowed one deep pass per quarter.

I've heard a lot of talk about how awesome the GSU rushing attack is, and granted 241 is pretty damn good. But, NDSU's rushing defense is not too shabby either (1st in I-AA at 29 ypg I believe). So, rather than just rant on about "our two 100 yard backs are gonna run all over you, blabity, blubity, blee" or "our defence only allows 29 ypg, blah blah blah, I did a few calculations to get an estimate of what we can expect.:read: :read:
Cumulatively, NDSU's opponents gain an average of 123.3 ypg (not counting their spanking by NDSU). Now, we (NDSU) have held these opponents to an average of 29 ypg, which is about 23.5% of thier average rushing ypg. So, if we hold teams to 23.5% of what they normaly gain on the ground then GSU should expect to gain 23.5% of 241 ypg, or 56.7 yards rushing.
GSU fans shouldn't be discouraged by that number, however. After all, that is almost twice what we normally give up.
Flawless, right?

Wish I could make the game this Saturday, could be a great game. Nothing but respect from our coach in his weekly press conference. He said he expects the tuffest game so far in the season. When asked what about Ball St, he replied he thought you guys stacked up better than them. Should be a dogfight. But I still am out on a limb and predicting the Herd to get their third straight road win. :hurray: :hurray:

I sense an air of over-confidence from the Bison faithful. They have looked at the results of the Central Conn State game and then seeing us lose to Chattanooga.
This Eagle team is getting better every game. Their transitional from the TO to the multiple set offense is beginning to pay off. Don't get your hopes up so fast. We don't like getting embarassed in "OUR HOUSE" twice in one year by a newbie to I-AA.
It will be a close game, but Georgia Southern is still Georgia Southern.

Shoot 'Bro, I just hope we don't get shutout and have negative offensive totals against this (to listen to their fans) juggarnaut. Perhaps this great and mighty team should just stop in Atlanta on the way down and take on the Falcons, since they think that is more to their level of competition.
We all know that GSU has never beaten anybody and poses absolutely no threat to this nationally recognized and feared powerhouse. I just hope after this anihilation and beatdown we are able to field a team to play Elon the next week.

I'm really looking forward to this game, It has made this week drag unbelievably slow. When I first saw NDSU on the schedule I scratched my head and said "What !?!" I do not mean smack by stating that. Then I did my research and have done a 180 degree turn on my outlook. I have the utmost respect for this program.
I like most everyone else forsee a very tight game. If its not close, I hate to say it. But The Buffs could explode on our Defense. The D have showed signs of life and have improved every game. NDSU will put some pts on the board. Our Trip O is gone but definatley not our rushing game. Clark and our recievers have the ability to strike from anywhere. I think it will come down to turnovers and penalties. Can't wait. Again to all NDSU fans you must find the Red Flag Gang. They will receive you with open arms. Ya'll will def enjoy the trip. Cheers,

I believe it was around 80 in Fargo earlier this week. Lasrt week NDSU won at SFA where if I remember correctly the temperature at kick off was in the upper 80's. Last year the Bison won 35-7 at Northwestern State in early September. NDSU was ranked 22 and NW State was 11 at that time. and in 2004 the Bison won 24-14 at Nicholls State in early October.
This I think shows that NDSU can compete in the warmer climate and doesn't fall apart in the 4th quarter due to heat.

South Georgia swamp is a different kind of heat. I got family in Watertown, SD. 80 in Watertown is alot different than Georgia. Of course having 9,000 drunk students 6 feet behind your bench isn't fun either. App lost their two years ago 50 something to 7. We also playe at NW State. No comparason. I'm not a GSU fan. I'm just telling you nobody likes going to Paulson to play. I mean nobody. Originally I was thankful our game was October 21 so the heat wouldn't be so bad, but, dang it GSU is starting to play like their new coach wants and I was afraid of that.

When we played at Northwestern State it was mid-high 90's and humid but the sun was also starting to go down. The football team actually went out and rented some sort of water mister device to cool the football players just in case the heat became a problem. They never used it for what I heard. Ironicly, on that same day it was actually HOTTER and more HUMID in Fargo.
Bottom Line, weather will NOT win GSU this game. If they beat the Bison it is due to other factors, and personally I think there is alot stacked against the Bison in this one.

Glad to finally be on board 'Cluck U;' hope those Delaware Blue Hens are doing well; wouldn't mind having a repeat in the I-AA play-offs with you again; damn good game back in 1993.
Hope those Bison don't get knocked out by all that 'swamp gas' that 'Appdad' was talking about from south Georgia. I know the Griz had a tough time there in Statesboro back in 1989, but at least that game was in December. That Erk Russell was something else with his head-butting his own players (even when they had their helmets on no less!!!).

The biggest thing they have going is the fact that NDSU is on its third road game in a row.
Adding the 12 man from the stands never hurts, but if they are hanging their hat on that it could get to be a long afternoon.
Knowing the history of the program I dont think thats true. They will be prepared and ready to play. So will The BISON.
A key for NDSU is to take the crowd out early.

All true, all true.
It has always been my belief- reinforced from personal playing experience- that the home fans don't hurt the visiting team as much as they help the home team by pumping the home players up.

only problem with that statement is that no matter the score...we stand behind our guys 110% so the crowd will be in the game no matter what...i look forward to tomorrow...not sure who is going to win...but i know it will be a great game...any bison comeing down...feel free to drop by our tailgate also for some conversation about football and some beers!!! we are on the corner of 4N...just look for the Eagle Grill in the Trailer hitch of a black f150:thumbsup:

Great West Football Conference writer Chris Kelly is going with GSU in a tight one.
"The Bison are also on the road for their third straight trip. Two weeks ago an emotional win, then a hard fought battle in Texas and now a trip to face an extremely physical team. These road trips and physical play take a toll. Finally, this Georgia Southern team is a little deceiving. Yes, they might have two losses but I pin that on the new system rather than the talent. This group finally started to look like it was coming together a week ago, and I think they'll build on that this weekend. Coach Craig Bohl stated this team was better than Ball State for a reason. The road trips will finally wear on the Bison against a talented Eagle squad as Georgia Southern nips the Bison at the finish. Georgia Southern 23 North Dakota State 21."

GO BISON! - GROUND THE EAGLES!

I don't think it's going to be close. I'm picking NDSU to take GSU behind the woodshed and deliver an old fashion mid-western beating.
Called it. GSU had no idea what they were going to be facing today.

NDSU scares the crap out of me. SIU knows how tough that team is from last season and i'm sure they've improved this year. Adding them to the Gateway would be a nightmare for all involved as they are an amazing program. Congrats on a nice win, no win for you guy anymore is ever an upset.

actually, I don't think to many Bison fans would object to that either after returning all 5 of our starters from last year ;)

Oh I bet we woud IF it would help our RPI, chances are it wouldn't though. I think it is a safe bet to take SIU returning the entire team minus a walk on & adding a top 150 shooting guard & 7'2" transfer :) We are ranked top 25 pre-season ;) But this is footall and well I can't say if we played we'd see a repeat of last season. Best of luck the rest of the season.

Badgers were Top 15 at the time last year. Bison had the youngest team in the NCAA in 2005-2006.

I'm not mad about this loss, cause this wasn't really Georgia Southern, at least the one I've always known. This was an imposter coached by an idiot.
2011 hurt because I thought we were better than we were, but I realized you guys were the better team.
Last year about destroyed me though, cause I believe we were the better team and let the game get away from us.
And who's to say we'll never play again?

This happens to be the first meeting between GSU and NDSU. Why do I get the feeling that it won't be the last? We'll likely be see'n y'all in the playoffs someday. Hopefully we'll get some regular season games in as well.

Attention, IAA world:
Don't count this game out as irrelavent. This is going to be a war between two of the top IAA teams in the country.
Both teams are going to be focused and ready to play, but GSU's rushing O pulls this one out for us.
GSU: 34
NDSU: 17
