Day 3 Answers

1. Compound question - nail one answer for full credit but you must get the correct school in the correct year:
+ In 1979, this current Patriot League school lost to Eastern Kentucky in the national championship game 30-7. Lehigh

++ In 2003, this current Patriot League school lost to Delaware in the national championship game 40-0. Colgate

2. The 1995 national championship game set a new 1-AA/FCS national championship record for attendance (over 32,000); a record that still stands today. Name one team that played in this game. Hint: One of the participants hosted the 1-AA championships from 1992-1996 so they played this game at home. It didn't help enough as they lost 22-20. Big hint: A horrific plane crash in 1970 devastated one of the football programs.
Montana beat Marshall in Huntington, WV

3. Better known for their two appearances in the NCAA Men's Basketball Championship, this Pioneer Conference program also sent a RB (Arnold Mickens) to the NFL in 1996, something they hadn't done since circa World War II. Name the school. Butler

4. Three CURRENT FCS schools have won the NCAA Men's Basketball Championship (don't say UConn because I just bolded "current"). Name one. Big Hint: One of the FCS schools also won the FCS championship. Villanova should have been your first thought, and that's a correct answer. You must have immediately realized that they won the FCS NC in 2009 so that was a big hint for the slower learners. Georgetown is another correct answer. Huge kudos to you if you also know that Holy Cross won the Men's BB NC in 1947.

5. On 06 June 2008, this conference changed its name to The Missouri Valley Football Conference. Gateway Football Conference

3. North Dakota

In recent history, national discussion of the UND athletics program has often revolved around this logo. Because of the NCAA's perception that the term "Fighting Sioux" and the accompanying logo are offensive to American Indians, the NCAA pressured the university to discontinue use of the logo, including threatening the forfeit of post-season games if UND athletes, cheerleaders, or band members wear attire with the Fighting Sioux nickname or Native American head logo. In June 2012 the people of North Dakota voted to allow the University to drop the nickname and on June 14, 2012, the state Board of Higher Education voted to discontinue the use of the University of North Dakota's moniker and Indian head logo. State law prohibits the university from adopting a new team name until 2015.

2. A) Butler and Valparaiso ----- B) Morehead State University

3. Rules governing the League's academic concerns posed by the extended December schedule. The Ivy League plays a strict 10 game schedule, compared to other FCS members' schedules of 11 or 12 regular season games, plus post-season, which was expanded in 2010 to five rounds with 20 teams, with a bye week for the top 12 teams. Football is the only sport in which the Ivy League declines to compete for a national title.

4. UT-Martin

5. Cal Poly and UC-Davis

Per Wiki: The Battle for the Golden Horseshoe is an annual rivalry college football (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/College_football) game played between the UC Davis Aggies (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/University_of_California,_Davis) and the Cal Poly Mustangs (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/California_Polytechnic_State_University). Although the two teams have met on the gridiron since 1939, the rivalry officially began with the 2004 game at Cal Poly. The winner of the game receives the Golden Horseshoe Trophy, which was also created in 2004 for the inaugural game. Due to a misunderstanding, both schools constructed a trophy for the rivalry and brought it to the inaugural game. The teams decided that the rivalry would adopt the trophy created by the winner of that game; UC Davis won 36–33 and was therefore allowed to make its trophy the official one to be exchanged in all subsequent meetings.Through 2012, UC Davis leads the series 5–4; UC Davis won the trophy in 2004, 2005, 2009, 2010, and 2011, and Cal Poly took it in 2006, 2007, 2008, and 2012. Davis leads the all-time series at 19–17–2.
There is also controversy regarding the addition of gems to the trophy after each win. The Mustang Maniacs, the student group who holds the trophy while it is under Cal Poly's control, added blue and green gems to the trophy from 2006 to 2008. But when the Aggie Pack regained control of the trophy in 2009, they removed the gems, wishing to keep the trophy in its original condition.
