North Dakota State continues their streak at #1 in the Gridiron Power Index (GPI), the index ranking for the NCAA Division I FCS and a top indicator of at-large playoff selection, after disposing of then #2 Northern Iowa. There is a lot of movement in the rankings at this point in the season as can be expected as more games are played.

The Missouri Valley Football Conference has five teams in the top 25; the Big Sky Conference and Colonial Athletic Association have four; the Ohio Valley and Southland Conferences have three each; the Ivy League has two; and the Big South Conference, Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference, Patriot League and Independents have one each. (Games through 10/6/13)

For conference average rankings, the Missouri Valley Football Conference is in first with the Colonial Athletic Association and the Southland Conference at two and three. The Ohio Valley and Big Sky Conferences round out the top five.

The GPI tells me that Western bias is permeating the "human" polls..........and that there is a CAA backlash.

The computers, 5 of the 7 components in this calculation, really like Maine and Villanova. The two human polls are less excited about them.
Since it's 5 out of 7, the 5 win...and sanity reigns.

The computers seem to like Maine, Villanova and William & Mary. The human seem higher on JMU & UNH than the computers.

Just interesting. Even though the GPI includes the two polls there are pretty big differences. Compare the GPI rank with the two polls rank averaged. If there is a difference of over two in the rank you can see which teams are over-ranked and under-ranked in the polls compared to the GPI:
