Geez, a national high school record for rushing hards with 658 rushing yards. I remember seeing Adrian Peterson, now with Oklahoma, play in HS and he had these huge runs against Huntsville HS in a game I did for television, but wow...this is crazy. I wonder if this kid is just playing bad competition or if he's really a special player.

Any clue from our Virginia area I-AA community on this kid? Anyone giving him looks for college?

DELBARTON, W.Va. -- Paul McCoy rushed for an apparent national high school-record 658 yards and scored 10 touchdowns Friday.

McCoy, who had 29 carries in Matewan's 64-0 win over Burch, ran for 477 yards just on his touchdown runs, which covered 69, 1, 52, 56, 52, 20, 31, 84, 87 and 25 yards. He also had a 77-yard TD run called back by penalty.

The National Federation of State High School Associations lists the national record as 619 yards, set by Ronney Jenkins of Oxnard, Calif., in 1995. McCoy's yardage will have to be verified before it becomes official.

McCoy's 10 touchdowns would tie him with two others for the second most nationally. The record is 12 set by Ken Pearson of Hugo, Colo., in 1930.

McCoy, who is averaging 364 yards per game, has 1,820 rushing yards and 26 touchdowns this season.

McCoy isn't rated by Rivals.com (0 stars). He had 1,900 yards rushing, 300 yards receiving, and 30 TD's last year (to go along with 9 INT's). Listed as a CB on rivals, 5'8", 153 lbs, 4.64 40 time.

5'8 -153? 4.64?

Though he sounds like a great player- I doubt he will go BCS with those numbers

Not a record TT:
But high school records historian Doug Huff said Saturday the recognized record is 739 yards by John Giannantonio of Netcong, N.J., in 1950, against Mountain Lakes.

Ronney Jenkins, if he's the same player I'm thinking of, had an okay college career at BYU and Northern Arizona and had a few productive years for the Chargers as a kick returner.

I saw some film footage highlights and it looked like the players on the two teams were playing at a VERY slow speed. It didn't look like high quality high school football to me (and I used to cover prep football in Southern California).

Ronney Jenkins went to the same high school as my wife. I remember reading about him in the LA Times when he set that record (against a very bad team, BTW) and following him the rest of the season. I covered Oxnard a number of times when I worked for the LA Times in the early 1990s.

If 739 yards is the record, why does the national federation recognize Ronney Jenkins with 619?

Record or no record, it's still pretty impressive.
