CHARLESTON, S.C. – For just the second time in program history, Charleston Southern is nationally ranked. The 6-0 Bucs entered the FCS Coaches Poll Monday, coming in at No. 25 in the country. Coastal Carolina is also ranked this week, while Gardner-Webb fell out of both national polls following its 53-51 loss at Charlotte.
The only previous national ranking in the 23-year history of CSU Football came in November 2006, when the Bucs checked in at No. 24 in the coaches' poll following a 9-0 start to the season.
CSU has enjoyed a 6-0 start under first-year head coach Jamey Chadwell thanks to a powerful running game and an opportunistic defense that has consistently delivered key stops and turnovers. The Bucs begin the week ranked second nationally in third-down defense, ninth in scoring defense, 12th in turnover margin and 13th in rushing.
Individually, junior running back Christian Reyes now stands 11th nationally with 684 yards rushing following a 168-yard effort in Saturday's win over North Greenville. Redshirt senior defensive end Will Hunt registered two sacks in the victory, and is now in a tie for 18th with five sacks for the campaign.
CSU returns to action Saturday as it opens Big South Conference play at VMI. Kickoff at Foster Stadium in Lexington, Va. is set for 1:30 p.m. and can watched for free on the Big South Network.
