Charleston Southern becomes the third team in Big South history to open 6-0. Gardner-Webb and Liberty both suffer heartbreaking defeats in the final moments of their respective road games.

Charleston Southern rushed for a season-high 354 yards and quarterback Danny Croghan III had two rushing touchdowns in his first career start as the Buccaneers beat North Greenville, 28-14, in front of a sold out crowd on Saturday afternoon at Buccaneer Field. Charleston Southern continues to match the best start in school history and is now a perfect 6-0, while North Greenville (4-1) falls for the first time this season. The Bucs' impressive start continues to be fueled by solid, fundamental football. CSU had just one turnover and its defense held NGU to less than 100 yards rushing. Lucas Beatty’s two-point conversion try with 31 seconds left fell short, and Charlotte completed an improbable comeback to beat #24 / 25 Gardner-Webb, 53-51, in a Saturday afternoon shootout. The two teams combined for 1,163 total offensive yards, 66 first downs and 14 touchdowns. Gardner-Webb (4-2) came into the game fifth nationally in total defense, but allowed nearly as many yards (586) as it had in the previous three games combined (653).
The two defenses combined for just 21 yards lost from scrimmage, but Charlotte’s 3-0 edge in turnover margin proved to be the difference by game’s end. Two of those turnovers came in the fourth quarter. An interception, untimely safety after a high punt snap and a fumble at midfield after Charlotte pushed in front for the first time unraveled the comfortable margin built by the Runnin' Bulldogs. Big plays by Charlotte (4-2) proved decisive as well, with six of the 49ers' touchdown drives lasting less than two minutes. The hosts fell behind by double digits three times in the first half, but rallied just before the break to tie the game, 24-24 on a 26-yard touchdown pass from Matt Johnson to Austin Duke. A 27-yard touchdown pass from Taylor Heinicke to Blair Roberts with 27 seconds left in the game gave Old Dominion its first lead of the night and a 21-17 victory over Liberty, Saturday night, at Foreman Field at S.B. Ballard Stadium. The first four drives of the game failed for both teams, including a pair of three-and-out series for the Flames and the Monarchs missing on a fourth-down play from the Liberty three-yard line.
The Flames were the first team to get on the scoreboard thanks to two quick strikes from quarterback Josh Woodrum. The first was a 38-yard completion to Dante Shells over the middle to get Liberty into Monarch territory for the first time on the evening. The second was a 15-yard slant pass to Gabe Henderson near the back of the end zone, giving Liberty the 7-0 lead with 3:35 left to play in the first quarter. The Terriers rushed for over 400 yards, scoring six touchdowns on the ground, en route to a 55-14 win over the Presbyterian College football team this afternoon at Gibbs Stadium in Spartanburg, S.C. The Blue Hose fall to 1-4 and open Big South play in two weeks against VMI at Bailey Stadium Oct. 19. Wofford improves to 3-2 on the year.
PC recorded 85 yards on the ground and were led by Blake Roberts with a career-high 50 yards off five carries and one touchdown, his career first, and Seth Moreland, who rushed for 31 yards off seven touches. Kaleb Griffin completed 16-of-25 passes for 92 yards, his primary receivers in the game Tobi Antigha with four catches for 33 yards and Joey Gilkey with four catches as well for 28 yards and one touchdown.
