Perhaps there’s life after all in the Patriot League. Lots of "no contests" this week.
Week 7 – October 12, 2013
LEHIGH @ Columbia
LAFAYETTE @ Princeton
HOLY CROSS @ BUCKNELL

AAC 1-0
CAA 3-4
Ivy 5-6

Most Impressive Win of the Week:
COLGATE 41, Cornell 20 – Cornell is not very good, but didn’t think ‘gate had this in them.
Most Disappointing Loss of the Week:
LAFAYETTE 31, BUCKNELL 7 – The Buffaloes are in the running for “Worst Visiting Team To Play At Fisher Stadium In A Long, Long Time.” Pitiful.
Standings (Fordham counts):
Fordham 6-0, 1-0
Lafayette 1-3, 1-0
Holy Cross 2-4, 0-0
Georgetown 1-4, 0-0
Colgate 1-4, 0-0

All five have that potential.
SBU has been treading water the last 3 weeks. I'd be disappointed if Colgate doesn't hang in.
Cornell was a TO machine today. A good rivalry win though for CU.
Princeton looks darn good. Lafayette can turn some heads with a good effort. A win would really be impressive in NJ...

LEHIGH @ Columbia
LAFAYETTE @ Princeton - this game can make or break either team's hopes of a winning season. Toss-up
HOLY CROSS @ BUCKNELL
FORDHAM @ GEORGETOWN - OK, is Georgetown the PL's version of Savannah State, Austin Peay or Idaho State, with no hope of improvement? xsmhx
Stony Brook @ COLGATE - I'm not sure about this. Stony Brook's season was essentially over after the Coker injury.

Columbia could not come at a better time for Mountain Hawks, who should be looking to kick the crap out of someone after blowing major opportunities to make a statement in the Bronx on Saturday. Lehigh 52-17.
Leotards may be waking up and Tiggers should be a good measuring stick. Win, though, goes to the Pooh (PU), 30-27.
The Cross goes to Christy. Will there be 1,000 in the stands? No chips to be cashed. Bison go belly up. Holy Cross, 24-7.
The only fear Fordham will have in Washington is not getting caught in a filibuster or sequester. Rams, take foot off pedal in fourth, 45-6.
'gate may have become rehanged and starting to swing. SBU turning into an sbu? Raiders finding some mojo, and jump back into the 'conversation', 34-28.

LEHIGH @ Columbia – I’m assuming that the Lions field a team because the League pressures them to do it.
LAFAYETTE @ Princeton – 4 wins in 130 years.
HOLY CROSS @ BUCKNELL – The Buffaloes need Wesley and their top RB to return, an OL, a receiver or two, and then maybe, just maybe, they could get past midfield.
FORDHAM @ GEORGETOWN - From the fury of the Rams, good Lord, deliver us.
Stony Brook @ COLGATE – Has Biddle righted his ship? We find out this week.

FWIW, Georgetown's talent drops noticeably after this year's senior class. Check LFN's review of last year's GU recruiting results for some perspective.
Put another way, if you aren't able to recruit the right kids and get them admitted, you don't succeed on the field.

19-14 overall, worst year ever!!
Princeton 38 Lafayette 28 - The Tigers are rolling on offense right now.
Holy Cross 34 Bucknell 10 - The Crusaders are trending up while the Bison might be as bad as ever...
Stony Brook 42 Colgate 35 - SBU has been stumbling the last few weeks. If Colgate wants to build off of the Cornell win they can't get blown out.
Fordham 55 Georgetown 13 - This is going to be very ugly...
Lehigh 52 Columbia 21 - Poor, poor Columbia....

How I would rank the PL teams through Week 6:
1. Fordham Made a statement Sat. If I had to pick a nit, D is a little shaky.
2. Lehigh Hung tough, but Rams just do what you do, a bit better.
3. HC Coulda, woulda, shoulda against the Johnnies...getting better.
4. Colgate May have awoken from a September slumber.
5. Lafayette See #4 Colgate
6. Bucknell At the very least they a have a semblance of a defense.
7. GTown Like Bucknell, Hoya fans have turned their lonely eyes to roundball.

3-1 last week, up to 18-15 so far. Too close to .500 for my liking, so on we go...
Lehigh at Columbia Lehigh After all the talk about Lehigh's character during their early season comebacks, I think this game will demonstrate the most about their mental toughness. Tough loss against the presumptive League favorite puts a damper on the 2013 campaign, and with 2012 memories still fresh, makes winning out more imperative. How will the Hawks respond to a difficult loss, knowing more pressure is heaped on their shoulders, and another trip to NYC on tap? I'm just kidding. Lehigh bounces back easily in Harlem.
Lafayette at Princeton Princeton The Tigers are suddenly earning some press around the nation (or at least a few posters trying to sing their praises), and look to put themselves firmly in the conversation for an Ivy crown. No time for that this week, of course, as Old Nassau plays host to the suddenly potent Leopards. Does their big win over a solid defense set the stage for a late-season run for Tavani's Tabbies? Or is it the usual Lafayette trick of setting the stage before knocking it down again? Expectations are a fickle thing, and the safe bet is usually to pick the Ivy in this matchup. Still, I can't pretend I won't wonder...
Holy Cross at Bucknell Holy Cross Now here's a team wondering how they respond to their loss last weekend. Of course I mean the Bison, who will have to bounce back from getting run out of Easton by a previously toothless Lafayette offense. Just kidding, the focus here is on HC, who came ever-so-close to a win over Harvard before faltering at the end. No real shame in losing to the contending Crimson, but the manner will sting. Pujals seems like the savior-apparent in Worcester, so it will be important that he keeps momentum going with a League matchup against a team the Cross ought to beat.
Fordham at Georgetown Fordham Serious concern from Fordham's perspective here is keeping their heads right after a big win this past week. While they certainly look like the Hoyas of old, Georgetown is a long way from the Bronx, and the small crowd could certainly play with Fordham's heads. The St. Francis scenario is in play here, I think. That is, G'town might stick around for a bit while the Rams get their bearings, but this looks like the biggest mismatch of the weekend.
Stony Brook at Colgate Colgate There was much rejoicing in Hamilton as the Raiders notched win #1, and more importantly avoided the singular embarrassment of losing to SUNY-Ithaca. McCarney's injury leaves his status up in the air, but Jake Melville acquitted himself nicely in relief, leading the way to a victory. It's not enough for me to appoint him the next great Colgate QB, but it was nice to see. If McCarney is healthy enough, he will start. As for Stony Brook, Year 1 in the CAA has been a bit difficult after their recent success, and injuries have limited their ceiling. A matchup that looks much different today than it did on Friday for sure. One thing to keep in mind: Colgate was thisclose to beating the Seawolves on the road last year, and while the Raiders aren't quite as good, neither is Stony Brook. Also notable, my first trip back to the friendly confines of Hamilton for a game since 2007, so that'll be fun

It's at the point where those of us in Easton really look forward to those HC/Pard PL tourney matchups. Football is one thing but if you're of my generation (1980s) at Lafayette, Holy Cross always is the team to beat in BBall. I don't think I've missed an HC game in Easton in 25 years. Bucknell is good but to me Holy Cross always is the epitome of PL basketball. Plus, HC fans always show up for their team no matter what.
So yes, I'd relish a fourth straight Pard win in the tourney over the Crusaders, especially if it's played in the "new" Kirby. Maybe Milan Brown can find his calling somewhere in the MAAC or NEC. We'll keep FOH.

Good point. Lehigh is going to have to go on the road to face someone in a play-in. Perhaps you'll lose to the Crusaders in Worcester, though I'd really rather have the chance to defeat both you at Kirby on the way to the championship. Wouldn't you agree that would be best for the PL's CBS Sports ratings??

On paper many of this week's match-ups portend mayhem and destruction not seen since this summer's Sharknado. Life imitating art, I see some of these tilts going in this direction...others not so much.
Lehigh 38 Columbia 20 Engineers right the ship on their second trip to Gotham in 7 days.
Fordham 45 Georgetown 13 A case could be made that the Rams let up this week, but Fordham is on a roll and the Hoyas are just plain bad.
Princeton 35 Lafayette 27 Much like our "curse" with Yale (4-27 lifetime...no one else comes close), the Pards can't seem to beat Ol' Nassau, this will continue this season.
Stony Brook 24 Colgate 22 I'd go with the Red Raiders if I knew McCarney was 100%, but the Seawolves eke this out in Hamilton.
Holy Cross 24 Bucknell 16 Gut feeling that we'll win.... but it ain't gonna be pretty.

You saw the commentary on the Lafayette board... this is like Colgate part 2... but Princeton will run it better than Colgate, and on steroids... does that mean John Loose will have any sort of clue? And we have a habit of QBs making careers against Bucknell... Even Quilling did not throw INTs against the Bison, and this is a real team we are playing this week. As I sit here with my bottle of Jack...
Lehigh 70, Columbia 21... Lehigh may as well get le high in their travels to Bogota... Columbia may have a shot if this is futbol.
Princeton 4.2 x 10^8, Lafayette 17... 999-year agreement for membership of Lafayette grads in the Princeton Club entails Lafayette ineptitude in any match-up with Princeton...
Holy Cross 35, Bucknell 7... bad, bad, bad, bad, bad, bad football... bad! Bad! Even Sader87 will skip this one because it's in the bag.
Fordham xlolx xawesomex xtroublex, Georgetown xbawlingx xbangxxanim_chaix
Stony Brook 30, Colgate 14... McCarney or no, Stony Brook will win.

Lehigh in pretty good shape, physically for upcoming game. However, Cody Kondas, great looking freshman LB is out for several weeks after having surgery. Otherwise, Lehigh reportedly had a great practice Tuesday and Wednesday, so the loss is behind them. I expect a strong showing by the Brown & White as they tune up for the PL.
Kondas is a Sophmore. You may be thinking of Caslow who is a Freshman

HOLY CROSS @ BUCKNELL - Probably not a runaway, but decisive
FORDHAM @ GEORGETOWN - Kyrie, eleison
Stony Brook @ COLGATE - Home cookin' in Hamilton not quite enough

Question for Gate. Saw McCarney hurt knee .Serious?
the Gate board is saying that McCarney and DiCicco (their 3rd RB this season) are both out tomorrow.....not looking good for the Raiders

3-1 last week putting me at 21-10 on the season. Put my heart in front of my brain last week and took Lehigh over Fordham.
Lehigh 42, Columbia 6. Read why here (http://lehighfootballnation.blogspot.com/2013/10/game-breakdown-lehigh-at-columbia.html).
Princeton 42, Lafayette 14. They ain't Bucknell.
Holy Cross 35, Bucknell 6. Bison need to show me they're not the worst team in the PL right now. Having Wesley back will help, but not that much.
Fordham 42, Georgetown 24. This won't be as bad as some people think, but it will still be a resounding loss in the end.
Stony Brook 35, Colgate 14. If McCarney trots onto the field and puts up a hero performance, I'm going to be wicked mad. It comes down to who I believe: the message boards, or Newsday and the game notes, which list McCarney as "probable". I'm hoping the message boards are right, because without McCarney, Seawolves run away with this.

Really a stretch to find an upset this week. I would say Lafayette would be the best bet, followed by Colgate , then maybe Bucknell since HC struggles historically in Lewisburg. Really tough to see any of these happening though from my view. If Colgate wins, that would put us at 4-4 against the CAA this year ( 5-3 if they coulda beat the awful Danes). Good luck to all the teams this week.

Lafayette is due aganist Princeton, but they always seem to struggle when they play at Palmer or PU Stadium. I saw one of the few LC wins, back in 1982, and I am perplexed that they do not beat Princeton more often. It is not a question of talent, and I don't think it is Tavani's fault - he is a good coach.

Lafayette beat Princeton? Reminds me of a Hall and Oates song... "I can't go for that... no, I can't go for that, no can do."
Also of note, we rank at or near the bottom of national defensive statistical categories where Princeton excels offensively. Not hard to see what's going to happen. Odds of us winning like, 10%?

10,000+ posts, a long-time, solid information source, and you come up with this? Perhaps it's snooze week on the Tundra. Point by point:
The Pards are "due" against Princeton...NEVER. They win only when the gods allow it, which is only when it's snooze week in Valhalla. Ain't gonna happen.
It IS a question of talent. Tavani's recruiting has been at the low end of mediocre and his results show it. Sure, he has a few diamonds, but football is a quantity game. You need lots of bodies - and you need D1 bodies. He doesn't have them. This team is headed for 2-4 wins and yet very few freshmen get on the field. A very bad team and only 3 or 4 from the first scholarship class get reasonable playing time? If that isn't an indictment of the 2013 recruiting class, I don't know what is.
If it isn't Frank Tavani's fault, then who? He's responsible for recruiting and it has been consistently bad. Each year he has from 1 to 3 "no show" games where the team literally goes through the motions. Some of these have even been Squawk games, and that is unforgiveable. He is unimaginative, uncreative and his schemes are outmoded on both sides of the ball. On game day The Frankosaurus is always lurking. Cutting to the chase, and coming from one who probably "knows" more about Lafayette football than you, the Pard football program will not move forward as long as Frank Tavani has an office in Bourger Varsity House.

Jeez.....LU only two TDs better than Columbia?!? Yikes..what happened? HC looks like gang busters....that Albert Pujols is a real comer at QB....maybe the future Peyton Manning of the PL. One thing's for certain: FU and LU need to be on the lookout for HC in their rearview mirror. Meanwhile Colgate goes to bed (again) without a W. This is a team in abject poverty. Hopefully McCarney and DiCicco return for the PL portion of the schedule and breathe some life into the Red Raiders.

We looked good in the first quarter but I swear we got conservative by the second with a 20-11 lead. Tavani can't adjust and coaches can't coach. What else can be said?

A really bad week for the Patriot League:
Fordham and the Squawks by only 2 TDs in what should have been name-your-score games.
Cross scores 51, but gives up 27 to Buffalo. No one should ever give up 27 to this Bucknell offense.
Colgate scores 3.
Lafayette does not even beat the betting spread in confirming The Curse.

Both teams with road letdowns after Rumble in the Bronx to some degree. I don't read a lot into Fordham's "only" 2 TD win.

OK, carney2, I saw them in person today. I did not think they were as bad as you say. I DO think they have problems with pass blocking, missed assigmnents (they were easy to see from the stands) and too damn many penalties. Is that coaching? Yes. It may be Frank Tavani, or it may be who Tavani hires. I'm sympathetic to Tavani because he inherited a very bad situation much like Biddle did after Arthur Rothkopf left the FB program tied to the RR tracks in front of a 100-mph train and somehow it survived - and Frank brought it back from the brink.

Fordham jumped out early then went to sleep in the second half.
LU pretty much never woke up. The mistakes were the biggest issues. LU easily won the physical battle ...

Holy Cross was a bit sloppy defensively but they were very opportunistic...4 picks.
It was Bucknell, yes, but the offense is looking very, very good.
PL schedule sets up very well for the Crusaders...back to back home games against Gate and the Pards before the game at Lehigh.
This HC freshmen class was VERY under-rated here btw....

Play LU at LU after the LU bye. Not that bad for Lehigh, but I do also fear a let down following three weak teams and a bye.
