CHARLOTTE, N.C. (www.BigSouthSports.com) – The Coastal Carolina Offensive Line has been named the Choice Hotels Big South Football Offensive Player of the Week, while Charleston Southern defensive end Will Hunt (Greenville, S.C.) has been selected as Defensive Player of the Week for games played the fifth week of the regular-season. Buccaneers’ kicker Mark Deboy (Fort Myers, Fla.) is the Special Teams Player of the Week and VMI wide receiver Matthew Nicholson (Front Royal, Va.) is The Crons Brand Freshman of the Week.
Coastal’s offensive line of Chad Hamilton (LT), Jamey Cheatwood (LG), Kevin Hart (C), Mo Ashley (RG) and Drew Herring (RT) helped the Chanticleers roll up a school-record 652 yards of offense (355 rush, 297 pass) and average 7.5 yards per play in CCU’s 53-28 win at Elon -- the third-highest offensive output against an FCS opponent in Big South history. The line paved the way for running back Lorenzo Taliaferro, who rushed for 205 yards and three scores, and did not allow a sack as quarterback Alex Ross amassed 382 yards of offense and accounted for four touchdowns. Coastal scored on eight of its 14 possessions at Elon and surpassed 50 points, 300 rushing yards and 500 offensive yards for the third consecutive game.
Hunt had five tackles, a sack and caused a fumble to lift the Buccaneers to a 27-24 win at Appalachian State. He recorded a key third down sack that forced a punt in the first quarter, and CSU scored on the ensuing drive to tie the game. Hunt was part of a defense that held the Mountaineers to 3-of-8 on third down and 0-of-2 on fourth down attempts.
Deboy made a career-high two field goals in CSU’s win at Appalachian State -- his first attempts of the season. His 32-yard field goal with 31 seconds remaining in the first half tied the game at 17-17, and his 21-yarder with 5:38 remaining in the third quarter gave the Bucs a 20-17 lead.
Nicholson caught a career-high five passes for 86 yards and two touchdowns in VMI’s double-overtime loss to Robert Morris. His two scores rallied the Keydets both times, as his first touchdown grab was a 10-yarder that tied the game at 7-7 in the first quarter. Nicholson’s last-second Hail Mary 39-yard catch forced overtime and brought VMI back from a 31-24 deficit.
