....could it be the collapse of the Cardinals? Ken Rosenthal says that, if they blow the NL Central lead to the Astros or the Reds, the collapse will exceed that of the '64 Phillies.

They aren't playing good baseball. We will see what happens.

Well, mark my words...this will forever be known as the greatest meltdown in sports history...up 8.5 games going into Wednesday's game of last week...one win and nine loses later...we are a mere .5 game ahead...unbelievable...this is worse than the '64 Phillies, the '04 Yanks, and anyone else that you want to throw out there... they didnt do it in a span of just 9 games...Jockety and LaRussa should be let go...

You do realize the Royals lost their 100th game of the season tonight right? Just checking.

This will go down as the biggest collapse in the history of professional sports.

I agree - they couldn't be anymore lifeless. And especially if they continue to lose out to the Brewers of all teams. Just brutal.

Is it bigger than the Red Sox coming back against the Yankmees after being down 3-0 a couple years back in the playoffs?

I'd say it's close. The stakes were higher for the Yankees and the Red Sox, but the Cardinals have done nothing for about two weeks. The Astros came out of nowhere in the second half of the season and are playing great right now. They've won nine straight I believe.

Didn't the Cardinals have a double-digit lead in the Central earlier, before blowing eight games in 10 days?

The Cards were up by 8.5 games

I know, but didn't they lead that division by 10+ games at some point in the season, before the Astros and the Red started cutting into the lead?

Yes its bigger...the Yanks had to at least face a good team...we faced the 'Stros and Padres yes, but they arent the Red Sox's of '04...we just had to take one from Houston and it would pretty much be over now...after blowing four straight games in the 9th last week, you just had a feeling that something was not right, and sure enough--:nonono2: The Greatest Collapse In The History Of Sports:nonono2:

I don't remember it being 10+

Maybe I'm thinking about two years ago when they clinched so early.

I don't think so. Not only were the Yankees up 3-0 in games, but they were ahead in the 9th inning of game 4 with the (supposedly) greatest closer ever pitching.

Yeah, but the Cardinals have lost to teams that they really shouldn't have (i.e. the Brewers) during their slide. The Red Sox thing was one inning, the Cardinals have lost what, nine of their last 10 games?

IMO you can't compare a collapse in a playoff series to a collapse during the regular season - it's just apples and oranges. The Phils collapse in 1964 was the biggest but would be surpassed by the Cards collapse here (especially if the Brew Crew finish them off) and the Yanks blowing the ALCS in 2004 was clearly the biggest post season collapse ever.

To have a 6.5 game lead with 12 to go, and to lose 10 games in a row. That is beyond catastrophic. Nobody has ever lost 10 games in a row to be eliminated from the postseason. Unquestionably the biggest season-ending flop in baseball history. This isn't up for debate. It's like arguing who has the most I-AA titles or who is the tallest player in the NBA.

St. Louis stands to outdo the Phillies, having squandered a 7-game division lead in the past 10 days by losing 9 of 11 games. They'll need to win 2 of their last 3 games to avoid a Phate worse than the '64 Phold.

The Yankees elimination in 2004 simply doesn't compare in terms of numbers, but it's perceived as big for a couple of reasons:

1. It inolved the Yankees, and that automatically makes it greater (oddly enough, Yankee haters really hate the extra positive attention the pinstripes bring, but they gladly participate in the phenomena by accentuating the negative attention).

2. Though plenty of teams have won 3 games only to lose the next 4 (The Brewers, for instance, this past August 22-88), this had never happened, in that order, in the League Championship Series.

3. The context was enlarged by the history of the rivalry, the lingering memory of the 03 ALCS, the intrigue of a bogus curse (i.e. marketing strategy), and the fact that Boston went on to win the World Series.

4. Fans today are afflicted with a latest=greatest syndrome, which uncritically asserts that the thing that happened most recently is the greatest thing to ever happen. Basically, it amounts to a huge bias against events that they can't remember.

At any rate, we are toast. We have Weaver throwing tonight and Houston has Clemens...bye bye Division Title

goasu984Life

And bye-bye playoffs. I'm pretty sure that the wild card winner is coming out of the West.

Yeah...and if not the East then...we must win the Division to make the Playoffs...three losing streak that killed us...two of 8 and one of 7...we needed just one from Houston and it would be over...ONE, one of the THREE that we blew in the 9th, cause Tony had is head up his arse and wouldnt put Wainwright in...well i hope that he took notice the other night when he closed it...Izzy should not be back next year as closer...

Yeah, the Phillies, in their infinite wisdom, will probably pick up Isringhausen: the second coming of Flash Gordon!
