Playing AT a D2? Does their AD hate them or something?

Last year, they hosted Jewell and played at St Joseph's. Seems to be just what they do.

With the disappointment in your schedule, for your sake, don't mess around, come to Tallahassee and leave with a loss...xcoffeex

That should be easy to do, considering I'm a fan and not a player. xcoffeexxpeacex

With 2 probable FBS losses and 2 sub D-1 games, it will just about take a conference championship to make that Nov 19th game.

Thanks Kurt....I think there are some "moving pieces" going on here i.e. someone dropping a game etc. so it may not be as simple as "who has an open date on 8/30" or "who has 12 games already."

No problem. I have been working on the schedule matrix for AGS that we will put up soon. I have gone through and filled out a lot of the teams that were not already filled in (SWAC, Big Sky, Missouri Valley, Southland). It is now to the point that I have to look up each team individually and see if I can find links to articles to fill in the missing games.

I figure this week and next week will be big for finishing out schedules for schools that need games once signing day passes.

It also looks like most all teams are planning on playing 12 games again this year - except for Northern Arizona.

If you have any questions about specific dates or team, private message me.

This is by no means confirmed yet, but multiple people on Duquesne's board are saying the Dukes will play FBS Buffalo. I wonder if they were able to get "counter" status like Wagner was able to when they played Syracuse?

The following is from Always a Duke:

The Dukes' 2014 season will include the following non-conference games:

Buffalo (A)
Youngstown State (A)
Dayton (H)
Monmouth (H)
West Liberty State (H)

The contract to play Georgia Southern in 2014 was terminated, and Duquesne will be provided monetary compensation from Georgia Southern as a result.

Look for Albany, Bucknell, and Dayton to be on the Dukes' 2015 schedule.

Here's where we are at right now folks. Bold is home games, green is conference, charcoal is information we are lacking at this point or an open date. If you have a link to info. to help fill in certain teams please provide it for the guys working on this project. The BSC is the format that will be extended to all conferences in the near future with links to each conference and team easily available to you on the left.

It's no big deal I was just wondering if there was a reason like a change different from what might be there and so forth. I'll merge it with that one though so it's in one condensed thread for people.

I am surprised that Buffalo is playing 2 FCS games, but good for Duquesne.

$125,000 is a very low payout for the game, in my opinion. NDSU is paying fellow FCS Incarnate Word $190,000. But Duquesne knows what is best for them.

I'm not sure Holy Cross, and I know for a fact Morgan State doesn't, have the money for that buy out.

Though this wouldn't be the first time a MEAC school has ****ed UNI. Happened a couple years ago with Savannah State in 2011.

They were on the schedule...and a UNI athletic department member was reading a Bleacher Report article on the biggest FBS/FCS match ups for the coming season in March or April and came across SSU @ Florida State on the same day we were schedule with them. UNI gave SSU a call and were told "Oh..yeah...about that....we were going to tell you eventually". That left UNI with either a third FBS games, a D2 (which UNI picked), or playing an incomplete schedule (which wouldn't have happened since it would have meant losing a home date.

Good slate of opponents. Harvard and Brown are great games! Albany should be much improved and it's an opportunity to check out their new stadium. The negative? Why is HC on the road for the entire month of October? Everyone knows it's the best month of the year!! xthumbsupx

DII is the correct choice.

Brings in the same home revenue at a fraction of the cost of bringing in an FCS team, gives fans a well deserved additional date to tailgate and see the team play, gives back-ups valuable game experience and the committee will pick 8-3 with a DII win over 7-3 without. Very easy choice.

Myself I would be fine playing two DII teams at home in Fargo and traveling to a Big 12 or B1G team, for the non-conference schedule every season.

MVFC is the toughest conference in FCS and winning it means you've proven yourself against eight very tough FCS games. There is nothing additional to be proven in the FCS regular season.

Morgan St's new head coach is a Holy Cross alumnus, Lee Hull '88, very good WR in his day...played in the CFL for awhile...last stop on his coaching career was as Maryland's WR coach. I'm sure this had a lot to do with the latest scheduling jumble.

Here's CCU's disappointing 2014 schedule:

08/30/14 - @ The Citadel
09/06/14 - @ North Carolina A&T (Ugh)
09/13/14 - vs. SCSU
09/20/14 - @ Florida A&M (Ugh)
09/27/14 - vs. Elon
10/04/14 - @ Furman
10/11/14 - @ Presby
10/18/14 - BYE
10/25/14 - vs. CSU (probably Homecoming)
11/01/14 - @ GWU
11/08/14 - @ UNC-Charlotte
11/15/14 - vs. Monmouth
11/22/14 - vs. Liberty

Three straight games against the MEAC, two on the road. I can understand SCSU with the in-state rivalry, but NCA&T and FAMU? xsmhx

Let's just get the "but who has CCU really played/beaten" discussion out of the way now...honestly, I think we could miss the playoffs if we go anything less than 11-1 against this schedule.

Here's CCU's disappointing 2014 schedule:

08/30/14 - @ The Citadel
09/06/14 - @ North Carolina A&T (Ugh)
09/13/14 - vs. SCSU
09/20/14 - @ Florida A&M (Ugh)
09/27/14 - vs. Elon
10/04/14 - @ Furman
10/11/14 - @ Presby
10/18/14 - BYE
10/25/14 - vs. CSU (probably Homecoming)
11/01/14 - @ GWU
11/08/14 - @ UNC-Charlotte
11/15/14 - vs. Monmouth
11/22/14 - vs. Liberty

Three straight games against the MEAC, two on the road. I can understand SCSU with the in-state rivalry, but NCA&T and FAMU? xsmhx

Let's just get the "but who has CCU really played/beaten" discussion out of the way now...honestly, I think we could miss the playoffs if we go anything less than 11-1 against this schedule.

The 3 MEAC games are not the weakest part of that schedule. All 3 would beat PC, and a few could beat Elon.

Looks great to me! I can't wait for the games already!

Mercer does have to play 4 road SOCON games and only 3 home games, so that's gonna make it even tougher. The coaching staff did great to still get 7 home games given this disadvantage.

Go Bears!

Good schedule for the Bears. Will be a good test for a young team. No offweek until November, and they will entertain a very good Furman team right out of the gate. Looks like they will have three of the top four pre-season teams on the road, which will be no small task.

Still have a lot of winnable games on the schedule, but the jump between last years schedule and this year's schedule is going to be substantial.

Unless Wagner adds a home game, I would have to nominate this as one of the worst schedules in all of FCS.

No home game for the first full month of the season - in a season with an extra weekend and where you can play 12 games. If I was a Wagner alum or fan, I would be furious with this schedule.

Don't kid yourself - SBU isn't playing away games vs. NEC teams. SBU draws well and needs home games - they aren't giving up a home date to play in Staten Island, New Britain, or Smithfield anymore.

Me too but it sounds like they only wanted to travel this year and we would have had 7 home games this year and still try to get a home game next year too. Now we've killed 2 birds hopefully as long as Weber honors the return game. Still need to add another game next season probably an FBS.

Something was funny for a bit as I couldn't get to this last page even though I could see there was another page. That's why I typed "Breakthrough Post" cuz sometimes when it's caught in a vortex and won't let you see the last page if you respond to the thread it lets you through.

Not that time however. It finally let me on the last page just now.

Final schedule released for UC Davis. Same as posted here before - Stanford, Colorado State for FBS, Ft. Lewis for DII and the rest Big Sky. Almost no chance for playoffs or winning season. Not a very good schedule for fans who like to see their team win. http://www.ucdavisaggies.com/sports/m-footbl/spec-rel/022414aac.html. We could have scheduled Weber State, Idaho State and San Diego to have a chance at least. I like Sac State's better now.

If nothing else it might help with attendance. Those late October, early November games in Hamilton can be brutal. I've been up there many times late in the season (usually league title on the line) for their game against Lehigh and the crowd is usually less than 4k.

Really?

Wagner (3-8 in 2013) figures to make a major leap back from when they were a playoff team in 2012. With 45 scholarships, the Seahawks will still be favored.
Dayton (7-4) is a good team and a long bus ride. A "maybe."
Marist (8-3) usually plays Georgetown tough and is 3-1 at home versus the Hoyas since 2000. However, it's the best chance at a win this season
Brown (6-4) has won four straight over the Hoyas.
Harvard (9-1) is a mismatch at this early point.
The rest of the PL figures to be a grinder for a team which lost 24+ seniors and two weak recruiting classes. Remember, this team was 1-9 with a strong senior class heading into the season finale last year.

Georgetown could be a MUCH better team if it was actually allowed to recruit in the PL and not just settle for players that aren't getting a free ride elsewhere. Such is the situation right now.

Dayton, Marist and Brown. If you can't win those (or at least two, picking up a third somewhere else), where can the Hoyas compete? The LaSalles and Canisiuses don't exist anymore. Losing to Dayton and Marist have nothing to do with recruiting against PL teams. Georgetown should be investing in their program, but they're not. If you can't pick up three wins against that schedule, you need to seriously evaluate what you are doing. If you're not going to put up the funds to make the program competitive against teams in even the lower quarter of the subdivision, then why even bother? You can't cherry pick Davidson, Valpo, and Austin Peay every year. Claiming a long bus ride as an excuse against a middle of the pack Pioneer League team? Seriously? Forget that you're not funding to a Patriot League level, you're now making preseason excuses for not being competitive in the Pioneer League. If the University can't be bothered with making you competitive against Pioneer League competition, where do you go for winnable games?

All that said, I think the Hoyas pick up 4 or 5 wins against that schedule.

There really aren't a lot of winnable games anymore given the rock (the Ivy-sanctioned PL Academic Index) and the hard place (no scholarships to land recruits).

The scholarship issue does not seem to have any momentum, but if Georgetown's admissions office was afforded the same rules that 100 other I-AA schools (and 28 other Georgetown teams) do quite well, it could certainly recruit talent that could win on the field and graduate. Instead, it recruits based on SAT ranges because its AI bands are higher than anyone else in the PL.

To get its admissions back, however, it would have to do so in the NEC or as an independent. The PFL is not an option in part because those schools allow merit-based financial aid in admissions and Georgetown does not do this, either.

Schedule-wise, 4-5 wins is aggressive given the talent, which isn't very much. But at least it's Division I talent we're discussing. Imagine if a PL team signed up College of Faith--this message board might not recover.

I'm not convinced the difference is a deal breaker, especially if the PFL changes to allow packaged aid. Not being facetious here...at least one PFL school has already been doing this, in spite of the PFL's rules. I believe PFL schools are debating an update to the league charter that would allow athletic departments to cover unmet financial need.

Let's say packaged aid is legalized in the PFL...and Georgetown joins the PFL. Because they don't have academic merit aid, Georgetown might need to spend more on the packaged aid component to keep up. But it could be done.

Sorry...I mean Holy Cross...

That was discussed earlier in the thread.

- - - Updated - - -

As seen in this post...

No Worries, I remember that now after you pointed it out. IIRC, the HC schedule has a couple conflicts. I think they had at least two or three doubling up on their schedule..

Well at least it is early in the season and if Morgan St backs out I would hope that UNI would have made a significant penalty for them, since the Savannah St, buy-out a couple of years ago.

Small switcheroo: St. Francis now playing Clarion instead of Shaw on 9/6. Shaw will play fellow HBCU Miles instead.

Yeah...SSU royally screwed UNI...

If a second MEAC team pulls that **** with UNI you can bet the MEAC can kiss any future MVFC pay days goodbye. I don't know what kind of buy out UNI put on the game though.

However, it looks like HC's schedule link is now "broken" so maybe they pulled it after seeing they had that many conflicts and realized they needed to double check their ****.

UNI does...but the schedule is final with 12 games - including a game at Hawaii...

I'm wondering if they didn't commit to play one school and then keep looking to see what else was out there for money and then signed a contract with one and didn't tell the other school....

Seems to be a theme with a lot of schools....

Or follow the MEAC theme of signing a contract with one school then sign with another school and not tell the first

Not sure. As I posted earlier, the new HC at MSU is a Holy Cross alumnus...he may have pushed for the game in Worcester instead of Cedar Falls.

Our schedule is kind of a mess right now....the Ivies are pulling away to an extent, we committed to a lot of NEC-type games that seem to have been dropped, we aren't quite ready to schedule FBS games, new AD as of 2/1/14 etc etc. Very transitional period for HC football right now.

I think it was reported here that Harvard wanted out of the HC series.

But best I can tell, both Dartmouth and Brown want to continue the HC games. Not sure what Yale has in mind...

Yale has always picked and chose with us ovah the years. We are an inconceivable 4-27 against the Eli all-time....no one else is close in their dominance ovah us.

We've almost always had a very good relationship (sometimes acrimonious) with the Big Green...they are probably our closest Ivy doppleganger (similar student body, NE location etc) after BC (81 games) we have played no one else more than Dartmouth (77 games).

Brown has been a good rival and I think the close distance between the schools will keep them playing over the years.

Harvard is Harvard....hopefully we'll continue to play after this year even though it won't be on an annual basis.

I'm hearing from a very informed source that HC is still playing Morgan St....cue the UNI howling.

Well, last year we played Towson who ended up #2 in the country. In the years prior to that we played both UNH and UMass.

I agree, next year's HC sked is sub-optimal but I don't think HC is specifically avoiding Maine. As I've mentioned, the upcoming skeds have been messed up due to Ivy and NEC defections, a new AD, introducing schollies back etc etc....there are a lot of moving parts.

I am really surprised that Northern Colorado didn't get a game for the first weekend of the year.

Illinois State is also off that week and they have 7 home games this season. To me, a simple home and home would have been great for both teams, with the first game in Colorado. I know that Northern Colorado is bad and that Illinois State is shooting for the playoffs this season, but to me it just makes too much sense.

There must be more to scheduling than the "average fan" knows about; i.e.travel costs, politics between the schools involved, fan support, coaches influence.

From the press release it sounded like UNC's mentality for scheduling a 4th OOC game was "sub-DI home game or nothing".

Great job scheduling by our AD ... we had a helluva time finding opponents, and not only do we get six home games, but avoid having to play a non D-I, get to open the season at home, and get a 2013 playoff team at home without having to pay them to come to us.

There is a problem with this:

Morgan State hosts North Carolina Central on 10/11 for homecoming. However, the South Carolina State is hosting North Carolina Central on that date.

The North Carolina Central schedule states that they play at Morgan State on 10/18.

I think this is an error by Morgan State.

UNI has pulled Morgan State from the official schedule...

So in a year UNI could play 13 games, because of the HI game, UNI could be stuck with 11 and lose a home game leaving with 5 home games...after season ticket holders paid for 6 games.

UNI's *Best hope* right now is somehow convincing Drake to drop their D2 game with Truman State that day and give them 1 or 2 return games as a UNI/Drake game in Des Moines is basically a UNI home game.

A D2 is worthless other than keeping it to say we have 6 home games. It won't draw walk up for **** as Iowa State hosts Kansas State and Iowa hosts Ball State with a lot of preseason hype around that team. The D2 team from about an hour north of Cedar Falls, Upper Iowa University, hasn't announced a schedule yet so maybe if we have to go a D2 route go that way. They are a rising D2 program and to pay for an hour same day bus ride would be pretty damn cheap. I mean, we got Central State when SSU did this to us for 50K...and they took a bus 12 hours from Ohio. The other D2 possibility is NW Missouri State, one of the best D2 programs. They haven't announced a schedule and they really believe they can be a top flight FCS program right now. That would be interesting to see how they compare

FWIW Morgan State is 0-2 against UNI being outscored 115-20 (59-14 and 56-6).

I hope VMI's A.D. doesn't entertain any requests from any MEAC schools for an home and home (although VMI played Norfolk St. in 2003 and 2006 w/out any hiccups)..........

ACU only has 11 games scheduled and was open to a 12th last I heard. In early Feb. the AD said we were negotiating for a 12th game but I think that deal did not work out. You might have your AD contact ours re available dates and scheduling options--one and done or h and h. We played at Ill State last year with no return and might do the same this year. We are new to FCS, but we are a scrappy move up xlolx

I've been looking at who is open on that day, Villanova was one but I see that that's now a bye week in a full schedule. There's only about 10 FCS options left now.

Me too. Scheduling 5 OOC games a year is tough, let alone six. Getting Maine at home is nice. The NEC really needs another football member or two, any candidates on that front?

I agree. I haven't heard of any potential new NEC football members. There are really only 2 realistic options from current FCS teams, and neither is close to happening right now.

Marist - An offer was extended to the Red Foxes back when the MAAC stopped sponsoring football, but they declined and have been content in the PFL for a while now.

Georgetown - I don't know of any official or unofficial contact with the Hoyas, but they aren't going anywhere until their situation in the Patriot becomes untenable for either side.

Merrimack, Bentley and LIU-Post (formerly C.W. Post) are 3 Division-II schools from the Northeast-10 Conference who have made some overtures to reclassifying to Division-I. However, I don't know when, or even if, they will formally apply to the NEC for membership.

Liberty has a d2 that day but im sure if te AD contacted our AD they could make something work
No, BJ. Just.....stop. To start with, Liberty does not have a D2 scheduled that day. Liberty is at Norfolk State on September 6th.

College football scheduling isn't done by just running through the NCAA phone directory and figuring out who you can get to show up on any given day. It is a painstaking process with multiple facets and no game is scheduled without a reason ( recruiting purposes, travel costs, etc.,) and no game is scheduled without a contractual agreement.
First, you don't just drop a home opponent -- D2 notwithstanding -- to play someone else since you will have to pay a buyout to Team A.
Second, dropping Team A in March will pretty much ruin your reputation with not only Team A but also whatever conference that Team A happens to be in so you can kiss further home dates with all those teams goodbye for the near future. When you need to schedule 6-7 out-of-conference opponents on a yearly basis, this would be a really bad business decision. Dropping a team in March that also happens to be located in a recruiting hotbed like the 757 and giving every other team that also recruits that area an opening to recruit against you (ie., "They don't keep their promises. Look what they just did to Norfolk State!") would be just stupid.
Thirdly, assuming that Team B agrees to come to you, you now have to pay Team B a guarantee on top of what you already are paying Team A not to play them. Unless, of course, you agree to a home-and-home, in which case you need to have your home date on the front end so that you don't lose that home date which, even in March, has event tie-ins, ticket sales, marketing and promotional contracts already attached to it. If you do agree to a home-and-home and you have to travel to Team B on the front end, you are throwing all that money down the drain, damaging your reputation with advertisers and vendors on top of now incurring travel costs to send the team to wherever Team B happens to call home.
Fourthly, teams are not scheduled just because two teams may -- or in this case, do not -- have matching open dates unless there is an overwhelmingly compelling reason. One primary axiom in scheduling is "play where you want to recruit". Liberty does not actively recruit the upper midwest. UNI does not actively recruit the mid-Atlantic. This game would help neither team in recruiting.
Finally, neither team needs to play each other to fill out their schedule. Liberty already has 12 games on the books while UNI has 11 which, in most years, is the most you can have and, even in a 12-game year, is obviously sufficient to make the post-season.

UNI doesn't really recruit east except for Florida....You'll notice that 99% UNI games are played in the central time zone. The OOC games I can think since 2000 that are elsewhere (not playoffs) are BYU 2008, Hawaii 2014, Southern Utah 2007 (part of a 2-1 @ UNI), Boise State 2000, Cal Poly 2000, Ball State 2001, Cal Poly 2002, NAU (part of a H/H) and notice none of them are east except 1 at Ball State...which we kind of recruit due to playing YSU and Indiana State out there every couple years in conference. That's what, 8 OOC games outside of the central time zone in 14 seasons. That means of the 51 OOC games during that time UNI played just 14% were played outside the central time zone. The Cal Poly games were during years the Gateway had only 6 teams and UNI needed 5 OOC games. UNI played 2, I believe, OOC teams from out east - St. Francis 09 and Central State of Ohio (the D2 that replaced the **** over by SSU) in 2011.

As fans would it be great to see schools from elsewhere for variety/to see how they stack up? You bet.
The reality of it is a game against Liberty does UNI nothing. Very very very very few UNI fans know Liberty exists. There would be zero hype, attendance wouldn't be any better than a D2 from Ohio, it's not a recruiting zone, etc... The reason UNI has tried to schedule MEAC, and really any school from out east, is they are cheap (St Francis was 50K in 09 and Central State was 50K with zero travel expenses in 11). The MEAC schools were probably less than 150K to bring in.

You're point about buying games out this late is valid. I'd bet UNI is done with the MEAC. I'd bet the MVFC watched this happen to UNI twice now and will be wary and try to force HUGE buy outs on any potential game with them.

UNI has a real good relationship with McNeese, SFA, NAU, Cal Poly, No. Colorado, and SUU that helps out a ton.

Love the FBS game at Buffalo. Dayton and Youngstown St. are great regional games. Monmouth is a fine opponent, and I can tolerate a D-II home game.

That is a strong schedule for any NEC team. Originally our game was scheduled for Saturday 8/30. Understand it was changed since it maybe televised . By what network I have no idea.

USD finally announced the finalized schedule:

8/30 @Oregon
9/6 William Penn (NAIA)
9/13 @Montana
9/20 Northern Arizona
10/4 @Southern Illinois
10/11 UNI
10/18 @Missouri State
10/25 NDSU
11/1 @Youngstown State
11/8 Western Illinois
11/15 Illinois State
11/22 @SDSU

Very, very disappointed we filled our open date with an NAIA school. We absolutely crushed them as a D2 team back in like 08, can't imagine this one being anything less than 70-0. I wanted a breather between road trips to Oregon and Montana, but we might as well have left it open if that's the only team we could find to play. Games against lower division teams make zero sense, all they do is make it tougher to qualify for the playoffs.

Non-conference is great otherwise. Oregon, Montana, and Northern Arizona are all very tough, though I have to question why we even schedule tough teams if the playoff committee doesn't care at all about SOS. I predict a 7-5 record, 5-3 in conference play.

SOS is ONE of many considerations, not the only one, primary one, or whatever else it is made out to be in people's minds. So why do it? Because it gives a better opportunity of making the playoffs than if the same team under the same circumstances had not done it.

It's a pretty darn good looking schedule.xthumbsupx

7 Home, 4 Away - OOC is 2 Patriots, 1 CAA, 1 Pioneer, and a D2 - Week 5 and week 13 byes.

Added a D2 last year late after schedule had been released and played 12 straight weeks getting a bye in week 13, very tough grind.

How can you have a SOS calculation 6 months before the games are played? What's it based on? Last year's performances, division levels, or just Chuck's opinion of who is tougher than who?

You can use the final rankings for last year to get a rough guess. It's the offseason, not much else to be doing other than worthless speculation.

Those eastern schools have to schedule up to twice as many OOC games every year though. It's not easy to find 5 or 6 opponents and work them all into a feasible schedule, especially after September when most "regular sized" conferences have begun conference play.

Take a look at a map. Every fcs school west of the Mississippi are in three conferences...and it's something like 30 schools.

That means there are roughly 100 easy of it...with probably about 90 of those in the etz and the majority of those east of the Appalachian range.

I don't feel bad for them.

Here's the map

14 Big Sky teams
11 Southland (counting the two that are technically east of the River)
8 SWAC teams
5 MVFC teams
2 PFL teams
1 OVC team (which is right on the river)

That's 41 schools east of the Mississippii.

Each of those schools plays a "regular" conference schedule of 8 games (I believe). Meaning each team has/had 4 OOC games to fill. That is 164 dates to fill. Figure almost all of them have 1 FBS game (Montana is really the only exception there) and you have 41 120 opens. Simple math tells you that's nearly impossible. There is a reason Big Sky teams are literally playing each other as OOC games to fill schedules.

There are 127 (I believe) FCS teams. Math shows that there are 86 teams east of the Mississippi. There are more teams in the ETZ than the Central, MTN, and Pacific combined.

Not only that, for teams out west doing OOC games recruiting area has to be taken into account - why go to Virginia/South Carolina for a game when there has maybe been 3 people you've EVER recruited out of that state? Cost of travel? etc...

Schools out east crying about lack of OOC options is like Donal Trump crying because he only made 500K yesterday.
