Any list that puts VMI at the top is a bad list. :D
I also doubt Sammy would want to be in a separate division from Mercer, FU, and WC.
And the citdogs couldn't have their VMI bromance broken up that way.
UTC would take one look at that and bolt for the OVC.

Why would the conferences want to merge and give up an auto bid?

That's about as likely to happen as Kate Upton becoming a chess grandmistress.

Why would the conferences want to merge and give up an auto bid?
Even more importantly from a financial situation would be giving up a March Madness bid. Most FCS conferences budgets are paid for by March Madness money.

I imagine this hypothetical conference would be football only.

I'm failing to see how Liberty makes out in this scenario, except for the fact that they'll have a cakewalk to the division title every season.
Also, where's Monmouth? In the Patriot League by this point? :D

UTC would take one look at and start looking to move up to FBS.
Fixed it for you. ;)
Honestly, with the new AD we have, I think we'd be more likely to move up than to move to another FCS conference.

I agree with that. Chattanooga isn't making any lateral move, especially in this climate of ever-changing conferences.

Only way Liberty would win their side is if Samford doesn't play them......

Just to have fun with the scenario, Winner of each division gets an autobid and plays for a conference championship.. .lol

If you could do this, I might be interested:)
No offense to VMI and Presbyterian.
PS, the only reason that PC isn't included is that the last thing FU needs is another small liberal arts college in its back yard in the same conference. I have seen how the last one worked out:(

I would support merging the entire Big South into the SoCon.
