I have been a McNeese fan since birth. It has been a while since I have been this excited about a game. It is also the first time where I truly feel like we have team that is worth being excited about. We will see this weekend though. I am hesitant to declare that McNeese is relevant again. We haven't played anybody worth anything yet. Our defense gives up big plays. We will have a tough time this weekend just hope we can make it respectable.

Yes, he is right on. I have seen all the games. We came within 45 seconds and a close recovery of a fumble after a first down on the last drive of losing to a Div II. And our Div I opponents have won 1 whole game between them and that was that head scratcher Weber St win over SFA.
UNI has a great pass rush. If Cody doesn't have time to throw, it could get ugly.

Yup, we aren't very big upfront, but we make up for it by being slow in the secondary.

I know you THINK we're sandbagging, but you'll see the truth on Saturday. We haven't played anybody yet. I think, collectively, our opponents have one, count 'em ONE Division 1 Win...and that's out of, what, 16 games??
No, we're not sandbagging when we say we hope we keep the score respectable on Saturday...
UNI is CLEARLY going to be the best team we've faced this year....

We have an interior defensive lineman that only goes like 250 lbs. Your offensive lineman will swallow him. All our receivers average about 5'9" and they are slow. We use 4 running backs because they are so out of shape they cant make it through a game. The one bright spot to the team is that our water boy makes the best water in the world.

LOL! It's been a long time but way back in 1995, I was on the old AOL Div I-AA messageboard. The most fun I ever had with a fanbase was with the Delaware fans the week before our playoff game with them in 1995. By the time the game got there, I had them arguing with the Marshall fans about what they were going to do to Marshall in the next round after they finished with us. They spent the week after that game claiming to me that we ran the score up on them.
But, truly, this season, we haven't played anybody yet. And, as far as speed goes, that West Alabama Div II team, that we almost lost to, had more speed than us.

You won't need much of a secondary if our young OL can't keep your good DL with all their sacks out of Cody's face. Cody is not the best scrambler in the world and it is hard to hit a receiver, no matter how open he is, when you are flat on your back.

We've always had speed to burn.
What we don't have is size up front..on either side of the ball. We're small on the O and D lines....that's where you guys will have a decided advantage...
We're thin at linebacker, too...that's gonna be a difficult match up for us if you guys try to pound it on us. We're small and not very deep where it matters...
If it turns into a track meet, I like our chances...I like them a lot. If it's a slug fest in the trenches...and I'm reasonably sure that's what you guys are gonna be hell bent on making it, we could be in serious trouble...

I believe this one will be no different. I really am not sure both fans are sandbagging too much. I think we both know are teams can be really good, however, we also no so far we really haven't played anyone. Even though we both have FBS wins the FBS teams we have played were not good teams.

Yup, after barely escaping with a 2 point win in the last minute over a DII school, I am really not sure we can win another game. We are small on the line, lack speed in the secondary and wide outs, our backs are so out of shape we have to use 4 just to get through a game.

Can any UNI fans give me names of players I should watch for? I know about the running back and quarterback but what other players are just special players for UNI this year. A couple to watch for on the Cowboys are:
TE JR. 88 Nic Jacobs - big TE 6'5" 265lbs. Good mobility, great in the blocking schemes, catches the ball real well. He is probably the biggest offseason acquisition for us. He is a transfer from LSU. He creates a lot of problems for opposing defenses.
RB SR 3 Marcus Wiltz - small back but can be very explosive. Is not afraid to make contact
RB SO 29 Kelvin Bennett - the quickest of our backs. He has the potential to take it to the house any time he touches the ball.
WR SR 17 Ernest Celestie - transfer from Texas Tech. very quick receiver. Has had an exceptional 4 games to start the year.
WR SR 4 Diontae Spenser - Very explosive as a return specialist. Has had a pretty quite year as a receiver but has had some really good return. He does have a tendency to try and do to much and some times makes careless decisions.
QB SR 18 Cody Stroud - not over flashy. very efficient. Sometimes he has a tendency to hold on to the ball to long rather than throw it away.
DE JR 94 Everett Ellefson - 5 sacks on the season. Does a good job of getting pressure on the quarterback. He is a work horse and doesn't get near the attention he deserves.
LB SO 10 Bo Brown - Another one that does not get a whole lot of attention. He has a feel for the ball though. He is very fundamentally sound and always seems to be in the right place.
S SR 11 Terrence Cahee - One of my favorite players. Definitely the leader of the defense.
CB SR 6 Guy Morgan - Extremely quick. He has a tendency to give up the big play here and there.
Other than these halfway talented players we have nobody.xnodx
Who can I look out for?

It doesn't matter. The cowboys won't win anyway. I mean they are slow, unathletic, have played anyone yet, tend to arrive to practice and games late, and most of all forget to play the fourth quarter of most games! Here's a general run down of players....tough to tell because of who we've played this year though with some.
QB:
Sawyer Kollmorgen. Runner up for Jerry Rice award last year, MVFC freshman of the year and new comer of the year. Statistically the best (or top 2/3) in the conference last year. Throwing for 200 yards per game at a 74% completion percentage right now. 5 TD 0 INT.
Brion (Bree-on) Carnes (car-ns). Not a passer for us. He runs our wild cat but can throw. Only 1-3 this year but was a highly recruited dual threat out of Florida. Went to Nebraska as a QB, lost the starting job to Taylor Martinez and finally transferred here. He lines up at RB, QB, WR, and is our KR/PR.
RB:
David Johnson - runner up for Jerry Rice award as a freshman, 8.0 ypc this year, 35 career touchdowns in just 2 years and 3 games and wasn't main back as freshman. Big dude at 6'4 220lbs. Averagine 160 yards per game but played only 1 half against Drake and ran only dive against UNC to kill clock. Threat as WR out of backfield as well with 10 catches this year already.
After David we have some solid players but they are all new to solid PT this year
Tyvis Smith and Brion Carnes both averaging 4.6 ypc. Evan Williams was our back up to start the year but left the ISU game with an injury. I think he may be back this week, but with the way Tyvis has played who knows.
WR:
Kevin Vereen and Chad Owens both have 14 catches this season so far. Top 2 targets easily. Not flashy numbers because of the production from David Johnson but good posession type guys (that's really the type of WR that UNI loves). Phil Wright will see quite a bit of PT as well. Same Rohr (roar) is our starting TE but dislocated his elbow against Iowa State. Rumor is he may be back this week. Only Phil, David, Chad, and Kevin have more than 2 catches, but we have 6 others who have a catch. Sadly our top WR is out with a torn ACL during camp.
Defense
Jake Farley (coaches kid), Jordan Gacke (gay-key) are linbackers and lead the team in tackels. Xavier Williams is a BIG dude at over 300lbs playing NT for us. third in tackles 3.5 sacks. Collin Albrecht leads the team in sacks at 5. Deiondre Hall is our "rover". Plays a hyrbid saftey/lb position. Has some sacks, a pick, PBU, and a blocked kick
Defensive starters are solid, but not a lot of proven depth (okay almost none). The secondary is a concern due to youth/inexperience. We'll see how they continue to develop though.
Kicking
Tyler Sievertsen (see-vert-sen) is an All American kicker. Has decent range at about 45ish I think. Hit on 90% of his kicks last year.
Punting
We average about 42 yards per punt...nothing amazing, but very respectable.
Like I said, it's so hard to tell where some of our players really are though because of who we've played.
UNIFanSince1983
September 26th, 2013, 05:02 PM

I know I've seen him hit from 54 to 57 during pregame and half warm up but I don't know if he's done it in a game...didn't look.
I can hit 35 at about 50 to 60 percent just ****ing around...I don't think I'd hit 20 on a game setting.

No players at all, we are doomed in the UniDome.
Doc
Edit: Oh, and Sam is the one with all that southern speed. And West Alabama showed us what real speed looked like.We only had two, and they were both third team on The Sports Network - David Johnson and our Kicker. Phil Steele had only David Johnson, and that was 4th team. College Sports Madness has David third team
College Sports Madness has McNeese OL Arinze Agada on third team.
Looks like both teams have only 1 quality player.

One of our opponents got a DI win last night. So that brings the grand total to 2 between both teams. Can't believe 2 teams can both be in the Top 10 with a combined 2 DI wins for the teams they have beat.
Could be an ugly one in the Dome tomorrow afternoon!

Yup, I am mystified as to why McNeese is ranked at all, not to mention 9th. Our program has really dropped off a bunch since the glory days in the 90's. That D2 school, West Alabama, really exposed our team weaknesses. I can only pray those game films got destroyed.

"That's some quality H2O."

Agreed. Bisons (Beezons) is correct plural in French. Bizen and Bisson are both etymologically incorrect, but regionally correct. Technically the word is supposed to be pronouched b - i - ss - ə - n. According to the OED
IPA
Sounds like
b

The word comes from French "Bison" and Germanic "Wisand" meaning wild ox.
I would pronounce Wisand something like V-aye-send.

This is the matchup I will have my eye on.
NDSU-SDSU game is a good game. But all things being equal, NDSU should win.
SHSU - E Washington is a good game. But we know both teams should have a spot in the playoffs. SHSU should win this one at home.
Both UNI and McNeese State have excellent teams that could so some damage in the playoffs. If McNeese state goes in and hands UNI a loss in the unidome, they have to be put in consideration as being a top 5 team.
I take UNI in this one. They are at home and have what I feel may be the most underrated runningback in the FCS. In the MVC, Johnson concerns me more than SDSU's Zenner. The reason I say this is because Johnson is more of a dual threat than Zenner. Zenner seems to get most of his yards when the defense is caught out of position. Thankfully, my team has a veteran defense that has had a history of holding him well below his average. Mainly because they rarely get caught out of position on defense. Johnson can kill you out of the backfield catching passes. Of the two, I would say that Johnson has the best shot of playing on Sundays.
Alot of people on here stated that the McNeese St fans on this board are sandbagging...as an outsider looking into the Southland conference...I haven't seen much the past four or five years to suggest acting different. They have a good team, but the tendency to not be able to take that final step and make noise in the playoffs, or the conference has been the downfall of this team. Unrealized potential. It's been C Arkansas and SHSU lately... a win tomorrow and McNeese sitting at 5-0 could drastically change the landscape of the playoffs in the FCS.

I completely agree. This game will tell a lot about both teams. The main two things that concern me about this game for McNeese is the Dome and the running back. He looks really good. Big back that runs hard. The Dome will be loud and will really challenge our young offensive line. McNeese is really young as a team. We are playing something like 21 redshirt and true freshman. They are talented but have a lot of growing up to do. This game will tell us a lot.

I don't know if what we played the last few years could be called football, well good football anyway. It was a bunch of guys limping and hobbling around with a bunch of more players on the sidelines on crutches in street clothes watching. We had a M.A.S.H unit setup out in the parking lot for all the emergency ACL surgeries.

This has been discussed at McNeese before. And going to the family of John McNeese, who the university was named after, to get an answer, they pronounce it "Mack-Neese", so that is what I use.
Doc
It's funny. When I attended McNeese forever ago (the 70s), I and everyone I knew pronounced it Mick-Neese. But now I say Mack-Neese. Doesn't matter, but that's the prevailing pronunciation today.

I'd say you're sandbagging. It'll probably be more like 38-7 UNI. :)

In our view, football games are supposed to be fun and opposing fans are not "The Enemy" contrary to what a lot of young people seem to think these days. They are just more fans to party(tailgate) with who just happen to root for the wrong team. But we look past that. We like to have fun with them even though their team outmatches ours and is about to beat the crap out of our poor Cowboys.

UNI didn't really play any different than we have the first couple games. We were a little more aggressive than against UNC/Drake but in terms of execution were similar.
The game was frustrating to watch at times with the penalties/failed short conversions but then you'd look up and see it was 17-0 or 38-6 and go "Damn...I wouldn't have guessed it to be that lopsided."
UNI dominated every aspect of the game really. The first drive that McNeese had caught UNI off guard some. We knew they were fast but it takes a second to get used to the speed, and they caught us with the fly/jet sweep action. That drive stalled out and after that the boat race was on.
It was 17-0 at half and UNI missed a FG and went for it on 4th and goal and didn't get it. It was actually quite frustrating to watch at times in the first half. Easily could have been 24/28-0 at half. Sawyer got the passing game going, but we struggled to get DJ going like we probably wanted too....that needs to be addressed before next week. He only had 86 yards on 16 carries (a meager 5.4 yards per carry for him this week) although he also had 6 catches for 108 yards and 2 TD's (18 yards per catch). He is honestly twice the weapon that Zenner is.
The stats really tell the story of the game
Rushing
UNI 37 for 159 (4.4 ypc)
MSU 32 for 109 (3.4 ypc) and after their first drive it was probably closer to 2.5 ypc as they had 23% of their rush yards on that drive)
Passing
UNI 17-28 307 yards 3 TD 0 INT (11 yards per attempt 18.1 yards per completion)
MSU 17-31 171 yards 1 TD 0 INT (5.5 yards per attempt 10.1 yards per completion)
Total yards
UNI 466 total yards on 65 plays (7.2 yards per play)
MSU 280 yards on 63 plays (4.4 yards per play) - 20 of those yards came against the 2's on the last drive of the game
UNI recovered 3 fumbles from MSU
Won the TOP
Scored in 5-7 redzone appearances (missed FG and failed 4th and goal)
What concerns me going into next week is some of the injuries we picked up tonight.
TE Sam Rohr came back from dislocating his elbow against Iowa State...and probably tore his ACL. Looked bad.
QB/RB/WR/KR/PR Brion Carnes went head first into the wall behind the endzone after scoring (thanks to a nice extra push from a defender - not ill intended I don't believe though) at TD in the second. They brought the stretcher onto the field but he walked to the bench under his own power - and later to the locker room before half. I was standing in the north end-zone above where the players go the locker room - there is no chance he knew where the **** he was at. I'd bet it was a grade 3 concussion - I doubt he plays next week.
Starting NT Xavier Williams went out in the first half with an ankle/foot injury. He didn't ask for help getting off the field, just hobbled off. I'd bet it's a sprain (hope that's all it is) and he'll be back next week - though at 6'6 310 lbs a sprain might not be easy to come back from quickly.
Starting WR Phil Wright - don't know what happened but he left the game and didn't come back in. He walked to the training room with a trainer and came back on with a small boot on. It wasn't a full boot, it was like a massive ankle brace is a better term I guess...IDK. He'd probably be good to go next week.
We need all of them if we can get them. If not, well we go with who we got.

Clenz,
I was not able to watch the game but I did listen to it. It appeared the biggest (of several) daggers to the heart for MSU was the receiving exhibition put on by the UNI receivers. The MSU announcers were talking a lot about he circus one handed catches that were being made. No excuses, the Pokes got clubbed yesterday in a hostile environment and did not rise to the challenge. Conference starts next week and there is still a lot of football left to play. Poke fans are in a funk after yesterday but it could be worse, We could be SFA fans :D after having a record offensive day and having our ass handed to us by Prairie View xsmhx
clenz

I'll see what I can find for highlights. There were some great catches, but they were the type of catches that we are used to seeing. We've always had very talented WR's. They might not be the tallest, but they will always have very good hands and very good sense of timing to high point the ball.....There is only 1 from yesterday I'd consider a miracle type catch, and that was on the 4th down fake field goal shift play - and he ended up down and out for quite some time - if I had to guess he tore his knee up pretty badly. Our WR coach, Todd Blythe, holds the school career receiving records with 176 passes caught for 3,096 yards and 31 touchdowns at Iowa State. He's made a HUGE impact on routes, aggression going after the ball (he was notorious for getting away with OPI going after the ball), etc...
I have a hard time believing if we played 10 times they would turn out like that the majority of the time....but we just dominated every aspect yesterday.
The poke fans I talked with were great. One after the game was pretty down, but was great to talk too - also, god bless southern accents. xlolx
