CHARLOTTE, N.C. (www.BigSouthSports.com) – Gardner-Webb running back Juanne Blount (Wingate, N.C.) has been named the Choice Hotels Big South Football Offensive Player of the Week, while Runnin’ Bulldogs’ nose guard O.J. Mau (Masefau, American Samoa) has been selected as Defensive Player of the Week for games played the fourth week of the regular-season. GWU kicker/punter Jordan Day (Marvin, N.C.) is the Special Teams Player of the Week and Charleston Southern running back Ben Robinson (Tallahassee, Fla.) is The Crons Brand Freshman of the Week.
Blount keyed Gardner-Webb’s dominance of the game clock in Saturday’s 3-0 win at No. 8/10 Wofford. He rushed 35 times for 139 yards and helped GWU control the time of possession game with a 35:38 advantage. Ten of Blount’s carries went for first downs -- which were more than Wofford’s total on the night (8). He carried nine times in a key second quarter drive that chipped 8:02 off the clock, including four first down rushes -- one of which was a fourth down conversion. Blount rushed seven times on GWU’s final sustained drive of the game with the Runnin’ Bulldogs clinging to the 3-0 lead, and nearly matched Wofford’s rushing total of the night (144).
Mau posted a career-high nine stops from his interior line position, including 1.5 tackles for loss, a sack and a quarterback pressure. He had an early tackle behind the line that forced a punt and tallied three tackles on third down -- with two forcing punts. Mau made tackles on three consecutive plays with Wofford back deep in its own territory, and his sack came on the next drive to force a 3rd-and-17 situation. He made a team-high six stops in the fourth quarter and his pressure resulted in a game-clinching interception. Mau helped the GWU defense hold the triple-option Terriers to 149 total yards, eight first downs and nearly 100 yards below its season rushing average.
Day made his second game-winning kick in as many weeks, lifting Gardner-Webb to an upset of No. 8/10 Wofford. His 35-yard field goal in a driving rainstorm with 10:52 to play was the only score of the game. Day also handled punting duties for the Runnin’ Bulldogs, getting off five clean kicks despite the conditions for a 37.4 average. Two attempts were muffed by Wofford and recovered by GWU, and the Runnin’ Bulldogs did not allow Wofford any punt return yards.
Robinson carried 12 times for 98 yards and a 2-yard touchdown in Charleston Southern’s 20-12 win at Norfolk State -- the Bucs’ third road win of the year. He had carries of 39, 20 and two yards in CSU’s opening touchdown drive.
