People have been drinking in NOLA all day. Granted that's nothing new, but hey, just worth mentioning...
The state and the city have been working to close down most of the businesses, if not all of the businesses in the downtown early because it'd be crazy to get downtown...
Heck, I found a great parking space this morning at work! Definitely a different feel at work...lots of no-shows all over the place...
All the kiddies were wearing Saints jerseys! People were talking about Bush in the halls all day...and not the same kind that Cap'N is always referring to...
People are worried about problems (i.e crime) if the Saints win...
Who Dat Who Dat Who Dat Say Gonna Beat Dem Saints!

FYI...do some research...:read:
That money that went to the Superdome could only be spent on certain things, governmental buildings. The Superdome is a government-owned building and therefore, the money went to the Superdome, which has a greater impact on the city of NOLA than any other government owned facility in southeastern Louisiana...:twocents:

That doesnt make it any better IMO. The rest of the city aside from the French Quarter still looks as if it did when the water was drained from the city. There are still thousands in the city with no running water living in trailors. Its tax payer money and FEMA has even pulled out of the city.

The LRA money (which has gone through too much red tape for those concerned) is on the way for those who lost their homes. Katrina was a storm of monumental perportions and the cleanup will take years to finish
The $$$ used for the Dome was like TT said, for governmental buildings. Refurbishing the Dome was vital to the New Orleans economy, and to the psyche of New Orleanians in general, as it employs a few thousand individuals during a typical week.
Meanwhile, enough of the sniping u-SWAC :nono: ... read a great column by Michael Smith on ESPN.com ... :hurray: :hurray: :hurray:

They're filling the Superdome up. It's gonna be a big party in there tonight. We're watching it at work as we wrap up another issue.

Green Day is currently rocking the joint with U2 waiting in the wings (and the Southern University band performing at halftime). Clearly, this is the most electric night the Dome has ever seen.

And it was great to see my boys from the New Birth Brass Band and the Rebirth Brass Band, two of New Orleans flagship brass bands, leading the crowd before U2/Green Day. It's a small step right now...but one of the greatest cities in the world is making its way back. :hurray:

I understand the 'psychology' of having the Saints back in town and the ripple effect there can be on a community both monetary and attitude; but I still feel there's "Something wrong with this picture" when we make our priority the renovation of stadium and people are living in hovels...

I'm with you. I'm watching this telecast, and it is amazing to me that they had a Black choir singing and a Black preacher giving a sermon at a Black church about football rebuilding the city when last year (and even more recently on this site) the only thing people could say about Black folk in New Orleans was that they were "criminals", "looters", and "deserved" what happened to them because they didn't leave in time. I guess we are still expected to be the conscious of America when the country is down, but we are expected to take the back seat when things are good.

I'm with you on that HIU. You can probably blame on our inept state (taking its time on many issues after the storm and during the recovery) and local government (underestimating the number of people who remained in the city) that spent the early portion after Katrina snipping at each other's heals.

You can also blame all the people that took their darn time in taking care of FEMA and other things...
I worked at a facility that hosted the one of the largest, if not the largest FEMA center in the history of the United States. No one was taking care of their stuff on time! Heck, the longest lines were the days of the deadlines and then of course, the days after when all these people tried to get extensions from the government.
Even after the FEMA center moved on, people were still coming to our doors trying to look for FEMA and file documents that were months overdue...

I can't help but cheer for the Saints tonight, and that's not just because I could win the office football pool if I get the right total points.
Somehow, I don't think we'll be seeing anybody in the stands with grocery bags over their heads this year.

Granted the refs are calling this game extremely in favor of the Saints (which I expected) but the Falcons are absolutely embarassing themselves and their fans out there tonight. This is horrible.

Ive said for the longest that Vick shouldnt have been a QB past the collegiate level. He's a pure athlete no doubt about that, just not an NFL QB. That should be apparent by the fact that the Falcons are actually attempting to use a college spread option to accomodate him.
Even worse they have a QB sitting on the bench that could start anywhere in the country in Matt Schaub. Vick throws the ball like a rocket everytime and wonders why no one can hold it. It probably hurts lolxlolx

Ron Mexico is certainly one helluva athlete but I'm with ya unknown-swac, he just doesn't have the passing talent for the NFL. Honestly, I'd move him to receiver and start Schaub. Either that or put him in the backfield behind Schaub as a dual RB/QB threat.
This sort of performance was expected of a rookie with potential, but IMO if Vick hasn't gotten the hang of passing yet, he's not going to. I'd love nothing more than for him to prove me wrong.

What calls or non calls do you think went in favor of the Saints that shouldn't have? The Saints got screwed on the overturned pass interference call when it was obvious the contact was before the ball was tipped. Other than that call, it was a well officiated ballgame.

I understand the 'psychology' of having the Saints back in town and the ripple effect there can be on a community both monetary and attitude; but I still feel there's "Something wrong with this picture" when we make our priority the renovation of stadium and people are living in hotels...
See the problem is that even if you rebuild the houses...the people aren't going to come back without jobs. New Orleans' entire economy is based on tourism. Things like NFL games are estimated to bring in millions of dollars in hotel/motel tax revenues as well as sales tax revenues. Without big events like the NFL and conventions, the tourism industry takes an ENORMOUS hit. What's next....all of the service workers (hotel maids, waiters/waitresses, cooks, bartenders, hotel staffers, etc...) the list goes on, are without jobs. Without a strong tourism base to draw from, these "Hospitality Industry" businesses take a HUGE hit. With them goes the jobs.
Reopening the Superdome was a way to try to jumpstart the tourism industry. Showing the nation that at least PARTS of the city....the only parts that most tourists see anyway....are open for them to visit. It was a 4 hour commercial for the city. Additionally, this signals to event planners that the Superdome is operational. We seem to forget that the stadium only hosts the Saints 10 times a year (8 regular season NFL games and 2 preseason games....we're not even going to mention the playoffs : smh : ). The remainder of the time, the facility hosts other sporting events, conventions, concerts, festivals, trade-shows and many other things. Through the hosting of these events, people are drawn into the City resulting in a significant influx of money into the economy. The MORE events the City can host, the MORE those hospitality jobs will be needed. The MORE people will get their old jobs back. And the EASIER it will be for these people to put their lives back together.
