Paladin Junior Coming Off Recording Setting Performance In 42-7 Win Over Western Carolina
Sept. 25, 2006
GREENVILLE, S.C. -- The Sports Network today named Furman fullback Jerome Felton national offensive player-of-the-week for his work in the Paladins' 42-7 Southern Conference season opening win over Western Carolina on Saturday.
Felton, a 6-foot, 248-pound junior from Madisonville, Tenn., ran 20 times for 102 yards and set new school and Southern Conference records by rushing for six touchdowns against Western Carolina. He scored five touchdowns in the first half to stake Furman to a 35-7 lead and added his record breaking sixth score at the 9:09 mark of the third quarter to cap the Paladins' opening drive of the second half.
He personally accounted for 36 of Furman's 42 points and, in the process, shattered the school's longest surviving individual game record dating back to 1915 (91 years), when William Gressette ran for six touchdowns in a 38-7 win over Presbyterian. His six TDs also topped the SoCon standard of five scores previously shared by three players and set a new Paladin Stadium standard, eclipsing the record of four rushing TDs in a game.
Felton, who registered four touchdowns in the Paladins' 45-42 loss to North Carolina on Sept. 16, has scored 10 touchdowns in the last two games and currently leads the nation in scoring with 74 points (18.5 ppg) in just four contests.
His 40 rushing touchdowns already rank fourth on Furman's career ledger, and he currently stands third on the school's all-time scoring chart with 268 points.
Felton's national player-of-the-week selection is the first for Furman since the 2000 campaign, when tailback Louis Ivory and linebacker Will Bouton captured weekly scrolls.
Furman, now 3-1 on the season, returns to action this Saturday when it takes on Wofford in Spartanburg, S.C., in a 3:30 p.m. game that will be televised by Comcast/Charter Sports Southeast (CSS).
