We are a little over a half-hour away from kickoff of what should be the game of the week this Saturday in FCS. I had forgotten today was part of parent's weekend at Villanova. Lancaster Avenue was surprisingly heavy with traffic this afternoon in the area near Villanova Stadium. Now if the Wildcats can coax fans out of the parking lots and into the stadium, we should have a good crowd for what should be a physical, grueling battle between teams that met in the first round of the playoffs last season.

Stony Brook had the ball for 23 plays to start that game and burned off the entire first quarter on the way to a 20-10 victory on Long Island in the first meeting between the schools. It was a game between two of what I thought were the best teams in FCS and was one of the most ridiculous examples of bracketing by the Charlie Cobb-led NCAA Division I Football Committee last season. Now, less than a year later, Stony Brook has joined the Colonial Athletic Association and plays its first game at one of the league's toughest road venues, Villanova Stadium.

Stony Brook is coming off a brutal, five-overtime loss (26-23) at FBS Buffalo and the news that preseason All-American running back Marcus Coker is out for the season with an abdominal injury and that defensive lineman Reuben Johnson (CAA player of the week after a 2 1/2 tackles for loss, two fumble recovery performance in the win over Rhode Island) is out for the year with a knee injury suffered against Buffalo.

Villanova is also banged up after rare back-to-back losses to open the season against Boston College and Fordham. But the Wildcats should be getting back to health after an off-week.

Should be a very entertaining game.

A bit of a disaster. QB Lyle Negron will likely be throwing it a bit more than normal today.

Hey, this is better than a gamecast. Good old Comcast screws up a lot of opportunity to see games anywhere, unless you have Comcast.

Mr. C, appreciate the thred, can you tell us a little about what Nova D is doing to keep this s shutout thus far? I know you said Lewis has been all over the place making plays, is it just players stepping up or is there something schematic? I have to assume we're crowding the box and daring SBU to throw, are you seeing an extra down lineman or safety replaced by a linebacker?

Villanova has been playing a solid, vanilla scheme (about as straight as you will ever see the Wildcats play defense). Lewis has been manhandling things inside, while Sarnese at safety and Joey Harmon at LB have been active. The Cats have forced Stony Brook to pass by controlling the run and outside of a few big plays from Malcolm Eugene, they have limited the damage. Negron is doing his best, but the Seawolves obviously are missing Marcus Coker.
