Big South football continues this Saturday, Sept. 21, with five teams in action – including #15/15 Coastal Carolina hosting Hampton in a live FREE broadcast on the Big South Network. A printable version of this preview – as well as a national FCS round-up -- is available to the right.
VMI KEYDETS (1-2) at Virginia Cavaliers (1-1) • David A. Harrison III Field at Scott Stadium • 3:30pm • ESPN3
• This is the 83rd meeting between the schools. Virginia leads the series, 56-23-3.
• The Keydets last defeated the Cavaliers on Sept. 30, 1978 -- a 17-9 victory inside Scott Stadium.
• QB ERIC KORDENBROCK needs two completions to become the fourth player in League history with 500.
• RB DERRICK ZIGLAR has 93.2 percent of the Keydets’ net rushing yards this season (191 of 205).
• DB ALEX JAMES leads the Big South with 14.0 tackles per game.
CHARLESTON SOUTHERN BUCCANEERS (3-0) at Norfolk State Spartans (0-2) • William “Dick” Price Stadium • 4:00pm
• This is the second meeting between the schools. Norfolk State won the first meeting in 2011, 33-3.
• The Buccaneers are looking for their first three-game road win streak since 2006.
• CSU is the lone Big South team to have two players with more than 200 rushing yards thus far.
• QB MALCOLM DIXON (1,162) needs 21 rush yards to become the Big South’s fifth-leading all-time QB rusher.
• The Bucs lead the Big South in turnover margin with a +5 -- 6 gained (3 FUM, 3 INT) vs. 1 lost.
Hampton Pirates (0-3) at #15/15 COASTAL CAROLINA CHANTICLEERS (3-0) • Brooks Stadium • 6:00pm • Big South Network
• This is the first meeting between the schools, and the first of three first-time opponents for the Chanticleers.
• Coastal is 15-1 all-time against MEAC competition, including a 27-20 win at South Carolina State in the opener.
• The Chants have rushed for 200 yards twice this season and are 47-5 all-time when reaching the threshold.
• RB LORENZO TALIAFERRO is fifth in the nation with 387 rushing yards.
• Coastal Carolina has scored at least 20 points in 11 consecutive games.
LIBERTY FLAMES (2-1) at #20/23 Richmond Spiders (1-2) • Robins Stadium • 6:00pm
• This is the first meeting between the schools, and the first of three first-time opponents for the Flames.
• Richmond head coach DANNY ROCCO was 47-20 overall as Liberty’s head coach from 2006-11.
• The Flames are one of 15 FCS programs still perfect in red zone scoring opportunities (11-of-11).
• Liberty has held eight of its last nine opponents to less than 20 points, including all three games this season.
• The Flames rank seventh in the nation in total defense, allowing just 270.7 yards per game.
GARDNER-WEBB RUNNIN’ BULLDOGS (2-1) at #8/10 Wofford Terriers (2-1) • Gibbs Stadium • 7:00pm
• This is the 23rd meeting between the schools. Wofford leads the series, 16-6.
• Gardner-Webb’s last win in the series came 26 seasons ago, a 36-3 win on Nov. 21, 1987 in Spangler Stadium.
• The Runnin’ Bulldogs are looking to start the season 3-1 for the first time since 2009.
• DL SHAQUILLE RIDDICK ranks No. 6 nationally with a Big South-leading 6.5 tackles for loss.
• WR KENNY COOK leads the Big South with 19 catches and is tied for 24th in the country with 6.33 per game.
PRESBYTERIAN COLLEGE BLUE HOSE (1-2) idle
• Presbyterian College is idle this week and returns to action next Saturday at home against Charlotte.
• The Blue Hose rank second in the Big South in total defense at 304.7 yards allowed per game.
• LaQUA MAYES leads the League in kickoff return average (24.9) and is third in all-purpose yardage (111.7).
• RB DEMARCUS ROUSE is third in the Big South with 258 rushing yards and 86.0 per game.
• In his last two games, QB KALEB GRIFFIN is 28-of-36 passing ( =77.8 percent) for 309 yards.
