The East and South Sides will be complete by football season. The tower with the suites, club room, etc. is also slated for completion, but the original west side stands will remain in place for next year. Then, after the 2015 season, the old grandstand comes down and they finish the west side by placing the seating. I'm guessing the installation of the field turf will be the last step.

I really am excited for you guys. IMO the perfect stadium for an fcs team. close to the field, state of the art tech, no track, 18k(right?) I hope construction goes swiftly

Our family will be making the trip to Brookings next fall for the Dakota Marker game and it will be interesting to see the partially completed stadium. Should be an awesome stadium when it is all done.

I wonder if they are going to install bathrooms in the new facility or will they go with the old tried and true porta potties?

Real ones. I'm pretty excited about it.

The Jackrabbit Athletic Complex (Including all the new athletic buildings around the originally Coughlin Alumni Stadium) is turning out to be as amazing is it was originally planned to be. AD Justin Sell and our administration team really knocked it out of the park with how everything has come together the past 5 years.

I drove past the construction this morning. They've made a lot of progress with the steel framework for the press box and suite levels this week.

I know you're mostly joking, but I was curious and counted. The east side will have 2 men's restrooms with a total of 16 stations, the south side will have 1 men's restroom with 8 stations, and there is a men's restroom on the SE corner with another 15 stations. (men's restrooms are about 1.5 urinals per toilet)

The M/F ratio is a bit interesting. The east and south sides have a ratio of almost 1:1(41W/39M). But the west stands are a whopping 3:1 in favor of women(105W/36M).

This is just the main concourse. The club, loge, suite, and media levels all have restrooms of their own.

And now that's way more than anyone ever wanted to know about the subject.

I've got to say, the university suite looks really cool. Seating for almost 50 in three rows on the media(top) level on about the south 20 yard line. It's got a decent amount of floor space behind the seats to mingle, and it's got its own covered deck with views to the east and south(protected against wind from the west and north). Plus the athletic director has his own jumbo suite on the north end of the suite level. Game seating for almost 25, with 3 casual or table sitting areas inside.

Update article in the paper today.

(http://www.argusleader.com/story/terryvandrovec/2015/01/26/blog-steel-goes-up-on-stadium/22314319/)Steel goes up for SDSU stadium, new renderings out (http://www.argusleader.com/story/terryvandrovec/2015/01/26/blog-steel-goes-up-on-stadium/22314319/)

The amount of imagination required to picture the new South Dakota State football stadium is shrinking by the day.
Recently, the first steel beams went up for Dana J. Dykhouse Stadium as the 19,340 seat, $65 million venue will be named. They're just east of the existing main grandstand at Coughlin-Alumni Stadium – even though that side won't be done until the 2016 season. That's indicative of how much more work will go into completing that section, which will house most of the upgraded amenities.

Can anyone confirm? Does that make it the highest capacity stadium in the MVFC? I wonder if "bragging rights" for recruits had anything to do with the final capacity of the design they selected.

That's the number from the construction website. Remember that it was spelled out in the bid that it had to be bigger than the Fargodome. But it might be the biggest in the MVFC for only a couple years once the Fargodome mini-expansion is finished in a few years.

Been in the paper and stuff that they are really looking at it. Would get capacity to around 20,000.

Won't be too hard to convince me to check out the SDSU stadium. Hopefully they can start drawing better with it. Always nice to see full stadiums.

Cool. I hadn't heard that. Will check it out.

I know this isn't where you were going with the comments about "drawing" better and seeing stands full, but I was kind of surprised to see all the renderings without fans. Looking at many other renderings of stadiums, they look better to me when the stands are filled with cheering fans.

Go to the Fargo Forum and search for Fargodome. It's currently the 4th link and should be free to view for a few more days. Short version: seven expansion plans are being considered with one of them a sure thing(moving around handicapped seating to gain a couple hundred seats for $87k), and a few others under real consideration($12.3M to $21.5M). The plan is to build a tall addition on the west side that will include suites and a new media level overlooking the top of the west side stands. The more expensive options include building out over Albrecht with either just a canopy or the canopy plus a large meeting space above it and a rooftop deck above that. With the suites and press box moved to the new construction, the old suites and both current press boxes will be replaced with regular seating. All-in-all, between 1k-2k added seats. Unofficial word is that at least one of the bigger plans is a sure thing, and that they're leaning toward the largest option. (They've got the money in the reserve fund to pay for the whole thing right now.)

Here's the link with some (very)early renderings: http://www.inforum.com/news/3661180-fargodome-committee-reviews-seven-expansion-options-ranging-87000-215-million

Youngstown State's Stambaugh Stadium holds 20,630. Or so Wikipedia says. I say that only because it also lists Coughlin Alumni Stadium at 15,000 when its seating capacity was really only 11,000.

I'm sure a YSU fan can verify. But I'm pretty sure that number is correct and they're still #1 in terms of highest MVFC capacity.

20,630 is in their media guide, with a record crowd of 21,119 vs. UNI in 2000. 7 of their top 10 crowds were between 1998 and 2001.

Looks great! I'll look forward to checking it out this October in person.

It's kind of interesting how SDSU lagged far behind NDSU in terms of football facilities and NDSU lagged far behind SDSU in terms of basketball facilities until large new renovations for each will have tipped the scales in the opposite directions. Although NDSU's football and SDSU's basketball facilities are still very good considering the level of competition they play at.

Brookings has really thrived with SDSU's D-1 transition. The town and university have a much different feel than 10 years ago.

FCS bucket list/places you've visited is a good premise for an offseason thread.

Dairybar, Nick's Hamburgers, Pizza King Pizza, Zesto's and now the SDSU stadium. Love being able to catch a Football, SDSU WBB (vs a big name school) doubleheader weekend.

Enjoyed the NDSU (in Fargo), 1st SDSU/USD game, and then SDSU WBB knocking off ranked Nebraska at Frost in 2012. Daring from New Orleans to travel to ND/SD in November.

I was always George's Pizza guy. Mostly for the slices.

UNI always does a MBB and Football game same weekend. Unfortunately they are always on the same day. This year it is MBB vs North Carolina and Football against SIU. That will be a day to not miss in Cedar Falls for sure.

Also have senior day for volleyball that day as well.

Schedule is going to be crazy that day - 2 events in the McLeod Center (volleyball will likely draw 4-5k and basketball will draw 7300) and football (probably 14k) in the Dome, which is directly attached to the north side of the McLeod.

Senior day for football and volleyball, basketball vs a top 5 UNC team

Volleyball is set at 7PM on their schedule. If that doesn't move that means MBB has to be a 11/noon tip. That puts the game over between 2-3. 4PM football kick gets over ~7 for volleyball tip

Based on drawings of the stadium, that southwest corner will connect to the main grandstands. It looks like they are in the process of building the framework for the main grandstands first and then will connect the two sections once completed.

Beautiful stadium! Is there any reason the southwest corner doesn't connect to the main grandstands? It makes it look like two different sections that were cobbled together instead of one piece design.

When the new grandstand is built (the old grand stand is in these photos will be torn down at season's end), there will be a slight sliver in the seating between the west and south sides (seating chart (http://danajdykhousestadium.com/seating/stadium-seating/)). I thought this was gong to be a large entrance, but the administration is selling naming rights to the entrances and only list the 50-Yard-Line Gate (http://danajdykhousestadium.com/project-details/renderings/exterior-renderings/50-yard-line-gate/), Northeast Gate (http://danajdykhousestadium.com/project-details/renderings/exterior-renderings/northeast-gate/), Northwest Entry Plaza (http://danajdykhousestadium.com/project-details/renderings/exterior-renderings/northwest-entry-plaza/), and Southeast Gate (http://danajdykhousestadium.com/project-details/renderings/exterior-renderings/southeast-gate/). I can speculate the reasoning for this opening, but there are definitely Jackrabbit fans who are more "in-the-know" than me.

My guess would be the opening either has an extrinsic and/or a practical purpose, with the latter maybe being to get larger machinery onto the field area when maintenance/repairs are needed. Brookings has a high water table and therefore can't realistically build down to make room for overhead clearance. Once again, pure speculation on my part and I encourage anyone who actually knows to chime in and correct me.

It's going to be nice but I agree about the noise level. It looks very similar to SIU's stadium but with a bigger press/suite box and huge video board (got to love Daktronics being next door!). Montana State's stadium is similar but the seats seem like they go more vertical. Their place can get real loud.

I'd love for Lehigh to do a couple home and homes with two or three MVFC teams. I've been screaming for YSU for years. UNI, NDSU and SDSU would be sweet too! I'd almost certainly make the trip to Brookings if the opportunity presents itself...

Luke Bryan was even part of the video introducing the event:
https://twitter.com/GoJacksSDSU/status/704762159339687936

I'm not much of a country fan and would much rather preferred a rock concert, but I have to give the administration props for pulling all the stops to make the opening of the stadium memorable. Getting the two-time reigning CMA Entertainer of the Year to come to Brookings is a pretty big deal and could expose the stadium to a wide variety of people who might not normally attend an SDSU football game.

It must have been at least ten years ago- I was driving back from Northwest MO where the Mavs were playing. Listened to WNAX- the Jacks were losing to UW-LaCrosse. Evidently Brooking High School had played in a monsoon the night before and the field was a quagmire.

MSU used to let the Mankato East-West game at Blakeslee but they messed it up in the rain and they decided to quit doing that.

Going pure dirt this year. All the visiting teams can go F@#$ themselves. xpeacex

Sounds fun. The year before we went to turf we had at least some rain during every home game and full-on downpours for a good chunk of two of them. That was 2010 when we did really well.

By the end of the season though...

That place is going to look pretty empty for every home game with the exception of when the herd comes to town. - negative comment, Also completely untrue. Home opener, Beef Bowl, Hobo Day, USD, all will draw well and surprisingly none of those games will include the Bison. Will they be sell outs? probably not, but it won't be empty. We will have probably two games, as usual, that will be under attended.

Stadium is going to be nice- Yes it is. Thanks.

Really? Are you extolling the comparatively cosmopolitan characteristics of Fargo? This is a subtle distinction, lost on those of us from elsewhere, driving through.

Well, I am an NDSU fan but I know that the Jacks and their fans will treat you well. The stadium will be great, go to Nick's burgers downtown (weird little burger joint) and there are a few decent places to drink in the downtown area. Brookings is a small town but the college is nice. Bathroom jokes are pretty common when it comes to Brookings because it has been an issue in the past, both with tailgating and the old stadium but I am sure that this "feature" will be enhanced with the new digs.

Yes really. That's their favorite jokes, and it makes me laugh too, because our states more often than not are confused for each other or are thought of as only one state instead of there being two. Ask the normal bison fan and they'll tell you that Fargo is basically almost the Twin Cities xlolx

And I think you'll really enjoy yourself at the game, just remember to bring some warm clothes. Weather gets a bit unpredictable in October, could be 40-50 degrees or it could snow. I'm sure you'll be treated really well, the only fans I've ever heard of having issues were bison and yote fans.

If you are planning on it get your hotels NOW. That's the Hobo Day game so it will be a great one to attend, always a great atmosphere! It will be the 104th Hobo Day. Try to get there a day or so early, lots of fun stuff goes on the whole week. Name an annual one day event that draws more people. And to me it's one of those monikers that gets tossed around that may or may not be true but nobody really cares. And remember when talking Hobo Day they don't mean just the attendance to the football game. A ton of people show up just for the day.

Thumper 76

Look there's the week leading up to Hobo Day that has events the whole time building up to it and then there is Hobo Day. Similar to how the Super Bowl has events surrounding it leading up to the game, but nobody calls the Super Bowl a week or two week event. I'm not saying Hobo Day is on par with the Super Bowl obviously, just and easy event to show parallels to. And sure you can pick out a day of Sturgis or the state fair but those are obviously week long or longer events. The dates are listed as day x to day y whereas Hobo Day is Oct 22. And heaven forbid if you call it Hobo Days xlolx the old Jacks fans throw a fit, it's their get off my lawn thing.

Now since this thread is about the new stadium, I would venture there will be three games that will be near sell outs with another two with healthy crowds this year. The schedule is set up nicely for a record attendance year (new stadium obviously helps a ton).

First game in the stadium, close to sell out I think, for obvious reasons.
Beef Bowl, always well attended, especially with good weather and a semi familiar opponent
WIU is still early enough for good weather, should have solid attendance if the team is rolling.
Hobo Day, should be near sell out with a lot of people planning to see the new stadium if they haven't already.
MSU could be the stinker, November game and ****ty opponent. Will depend on how the season is going and unfortunately, the weather. Mild, decent turn out. If not, lots of people will be pheasant hunting.
USD game, rivalry game, glad it's the end of the year to boost attendance. If usd is decent, should pump it up even more. Probable sell out.

If we don't crush the attendance record I will be disappointed for sure. This season will go a long way towards building the Jackrabbit fan base. If we are good and win the home games, it can hugely boost our attendance. Even more if we managed to knock off NDSU for the first time in what feels like forever. That would generate huge excitement in the casual fans in Sioux Falls to help towards the end of the season. Would like to add I didn't check the dates for the pheasant opener or deer season, which sometimes affects attendance greatly unfortunately.

Why do you call it "Hobo Day"?

From Wikipedia:

A student by the name of R. Adams Ducher brought up a concept he had seen attempted at the University of Missouri that had students dress up as hobos and bums that was ultimately dropped from their homecoming celebrations for various reasons. Without a real event to partake in during homecoming, the concept took wing with much enthusiasm from the student body.[6]

The first Hobo Day occurred November 2, 1912. The men were to grow beards for approximately one month and the women were to dress as Indian maidens on Hobo Day. After all the preparation was complete, the entire student body participating in Hobo Day journeyed to the train station to meet the opposing football team. According to the student newspaper, "The onlooker could not have told whether he was in an 1849 Indian village or a Twentieth Century division point on the Northwestern railroad." The new homecoming celebration was a huge success and is still currently in place.

It's actually a pretty cool history to it, goes back a loooong ways.

Oh no! The rest of the MVFC isn't going to be happy about what the Argus Leader is reporting:

HEAVY IS THE CROWN

Brookings -- New field, bigger problem. Coughlin-Alumni Stadium had a distinct feature that opposing coaches were quick to point out when asked about preparing to face the Jackrabbit football team on their home turf: the crown.

For those unfamiliar, the crown of a field is the elevated center portion of a playing surface that is raised to promote surface water runoff. While no football field is perfectly flat, the former home of South Dakota State football was more pronounced than most.

Coughlin-Alumni Stadium will be officially replaced for the 2016 season by Dana J. Dykhouse Stadium, and with it comes the switch from natural grass to artificial field turf, but if one assumed the crown would be leaving with the grass, they would be wrong.

According to SDSU officials, a miscalculation in the height of the area's water table will force the crown of the new playing surface to be even higher than before. How much higher? Early estimations are suggesting at least twice as high.

Oh no! The rest of the MVFC isn't going to be happy about what the Argus Leader is reporting:

OK, I fell for it.

I'd guess the USD and NDSU fans are 99.44% of the visiting fans in Brookings in the FCS era. :)

I'm sure you'll be treated really well, the only fans I've ever heard of having issues were bison and yote fans.

OK, I fell for it.
As did I.

The sad part is, how many people will legitimately believe this beaus it's coming from SDSU.

It's a fun prank to play, but when looked at it analytically it doesn't speak well about how the football facility, or athletics in general, has been handled before that this is even believable.

It's been confirmed. SDSU's field is a pasture, but we're ripping it up and putting in row crops.

German Millet to feed the cheer team.

German Millet to feed the cheer team.

True enough. Here in Eastern South Dakota you have to utilize a combination rotation grazing and cover crops to maximize your cheer teams. More than likely its a combination of millet, turnips, sorghum/sudangrass. That way when we bring the cheer team back to their fall pasture, we'll be able to offer a highly palatable diet late into the season.

...but they'll be back to their fall pasture soon enough. Good stock management.

I'd be more than glad to offer "assistance" to the bottom 4 ladies when NDSU comes down. I will be more than glad to show them a few new moves and routines
