CHARLOTTE, N.C. (www.BigSouthSports.com) – Coastal Carolina running back Lorenzo Taliaferro (Yorktown, Va.) has been named the Choice Hotels Big South Football Offensive Player of the Week, while Gardner-Webb outside linebacker Chad Geter (Irmo, S.C.) has been selected as Defensive Player of the Week for games played the third week of the regular-season. GWU kicker/punter Jordan Day (Marvin, N.C.) is the Special Teams Player of the Week and Chanticleers’ defensive back Samson Baldwin (Greenville, S.C.) is The Crons Brand Freshman of the Week.
Taliaferro rushed 17 times for 174 yards and three touchdowns in Coastal’s 51-32 win at No. 25 Eastern Kentucky -- which entered the game third in the nation in rushing defense. He averaged 10.2 yards per rush and had touchdown runs of 45, 5 and 11 against the Colonels. Eight of his rushes went for either a first down or touchdown and five of his attempts were for more than 10 yards. Taliaferro gave Coastal an early 14-0 lead, had 114 rushing yards in the first half and added a 44-yard scamper on 3rd-and-14 in the third quarter that led to an eventual TD.
Geter had a career-high 10 tackles (four solo, six assisted) with 1.5 tackles-for-loss and one sack for minus-11 yards to lead Gardner-Webb in its 12-10 win over No. 11/15 Richmond. He helped the GWU defense hold Richmond to just 10 net rushing yards on 20 attempts as well as 4-of-13 on third down conversions and 0-of-2 on fourth down. Geter had eight of his tackles in the second half and five stops in the decisive fourth quarter. With the Runnin’ Bulldogs clinging to a 9-3 lead with 8:32 left, his sack on 4th-and-4 at the GWU 19-yard line ended a scoring opportunity for the Spiders.
Day accounted for all of Gardner-Webb’s 12 points in its 12-10 win over nationally-ranked Richmond. The senior walk-on -- in his first year after playing soccer for GWU -- tied the Big South single-game record with four field goals, hitting from 39, 37, 29 and 30 yards, the last being the game-winner with 25 seconds left. Day, who last attempted a field goal in 2008 as a high school senior, also punted six times for a 40.3 average and limited the Spiders to only one return for three yards.
Baldwin had two tackles, two pass break-ups and an interception in Coastal’s win at Eastern Kentucky. With CCU down 24-14 and EKU on offense following a Coastal fumble, Baldwin intercepted a pass three plays into the ensuing series and returned it 22 yards to the Colonels’ 9-yard line. The Chants would score two plays later to start their run of 37 unanswered points. Baldwin recorded his pass break-ups in the first and fourth quarters to help Coastal set a school-record with 12 PBUs in the game.
