Coastal Carolina and Gardner-Webb defeated two nationally-ranked opponents Saturday night while Liberty and Charleston Southern also collected FCS wins to move the Big South to 9-2 this season against non-Conference FCS foes.

Jordan Day’s fourth field goal with 25.8 seconds left gave Gardner-Webb the lead, and Richmond’s Brandon Jordi 43-yard attempt as time expired was just short, giving the Runnin’ Bulldogs a 12-10 win over the No. 11 / 15 Spiders in Spangler Stadium. The field goals were the first four attempts for Day, a fifth-year senior who spent his first four seasons playing soccer for the Runnin’ Bulldogs (2-1). Day had not attempted a field goal since his senior season in high school.
Gardner-Webb held Richmond (1-2) to just one yard rushing in the first half, and just 10 yards on 20 carries for the game. No. 21 Coastal Carolina scored the first 14 points of the game, #25 Eastern Kentucky scored the next 17, then the Chanticleers (3-0) scored 37 unanswered en route to a 51-32 victory Saturday at EKU's Roy Kidd Stadium. Lorenzo Taliaferro scored three rushing touchdowns and piled up 174 rushing yards, which ranks fifth on the CCU single-game list, on 17 carries for an average of 10.2 per carry. Alex Ross threw for 292 yards, which ties for 15th on the CCU single-game list, and three scores while DeMario Bennett had six catches for 131 yards, which ranks 10th on the CCU single-game list.

Liberty rushed for a season-best five touchdowns and 330 yards en route to a 38-10 victory over Morgan State, Saturday night, at Williams Stadium, capping off Hall of Fame weekend on Liberty Mountain. Liberty, now 2-1 on the year, won its second-straight home game and opens a home schedule with a pair of wins for the first time since 2010. Morgan State falls to 0-3 on the year. Charleston Southern quarterback Malcolm Dixon and running back Christian Reyes each rushed for over 100 yards and two touchdowns as the Bucs improved to 3-0 with a 30-10 win over Campbell on Saturday night at Barker-Lane Stadium. The Buccaneers improve to 3-0 on the year, while Campbell falls to 1-2. CSU continues its perfect start under first-year head coach Jamey Chadwell and is 3-0 for only the second time in school history.
The Bucs wore down Campbell, running for a season-high 327 yards and opening the second half with three-straight touchdown drives to grow their lead. Things didn't start out that way for the Bucs' option attack, but the defense held Camels to 91 yards of offense in the first half to set the tone. The Presbyterian College football team came within inches of winning its road game at Furman on Saturday, but the Paladins blocked a 23-yard field goal with 18 seconds left to hold on for a narrow win, 21-20. Both teams move to 1-2 on the season. The Blue Hose will take a bye week to prepare for a home game against Charlotte on Saturday, Sept. 28 at 2 p.m.

Freddie Martino set a Foster Stadium record with 12 receptions, helping lead the North Greenville Crusaders to a 37-24 win over the VMI Keydets in non-conference football action Saturday in Lexington, Va. Martino also totaled 182 yards receiving, the most by a Keydet opponent in any league since the team joined the Big South for the 2003 season, and with his 12 catches, broke a 16-year old record for most receptions at VMI’s home facility.
For the Keydets, Eric Kordenbrock had a career-high 369 yards passing, but was held in check percentage-wise, going just 27-of-47 on the afternoon. Sam Patterson and Derrick Ziglar had six catches apiece, and defensive back Alex James had his third consecutive double-digit tackle game.
