University at Albany football coach Bob Ford stood on the new field that bears his name Wednesday afternoon.
He held a bag that contained a box of cigars and a bottle of Malbec, gifts from his players on his 76th birthday. They’d just eaten a cake shaped like a football field.
The most appetizing present for Ford, who’s retiring after the season, is the 8,500-seat, artificial-turf stadium that’s been his wish for at least a quarter century. He gazed at the double-decked structure with a video scoreboard and saw his wish finally had been granted.
“It’s awesome,” Ford said. “It really is.”
