CHARLOTTE, N.C. (www.BigSouthSports.com) – VMI quarterback Eric Kordenbrock (Gibsonia, Pa.) has been named the Choice Hotels Big South Football Offensive Player of the Week, while Coastal Carolina linebacker Quinn Backus (Greenwood, S.C.) has been selected as Defensive Player of the Week for games played the second week of the regular-season. Liberty punter Grant Bowden (Centreville, Va.) is the Special Teams Player of the Week and Chanticleers’ safety Alex Scearce (Huntersville, N.C.) is The Crons Brand Freshman of the Week.
Kordenbrock accounted for all five of VMI’s touchdowns in the Keydets’ 34-27 win over Glenville State. He passed for 314 yards with a career-high four touchdowns and tallied his first career rushing score. Kordenbrock finished the day 23-of-30 passing ( =76.7 percent) with no interceptions and touchdown passes of 8, 38, 56 and 10 yards while running in a score from 1-yard out. He is the first VMI quarterback to throw for more than 300 yards and four touchdowns in a game since 2000.
Backus tallied 15 tackles, including nine solo stops, in Coastal Carolina’s 35-28 win over Furman. He also recorded a tackle-for-loss, two pass break-ups and an interception. On Furman’s opening drive of the game, Backus intercepted a pass in Coastal territory. In the second quarter, Backus’ three-yard tackle-for-loss on third down forced a Furman field goal, and he later forced a punt in the third quarter with his first pass break-up of the game. On Furman’s final drive, he sealed the victory with a pass deflection to force a turnover on downs. For his efforts, Backus was named a National All-Star by College Sporting News.
Bowden averaged 40.2 yards on five punts to help Liberty win the field possession battle and defeat Monmouth. Two of his punts pinned the Hawks inside the 20-yard line, including the first which put Monmouth at the 1-yard line that eventually led to a Liberty safety. MU managed just one punt return for two yards and its average start following Bowden’s punts was its own 17-yard line. Bowden had punts of 35, 34, 43, 36 and 51 yards and finished with a 39.8 net average.
Scearce, a redshirt-freshman making his second career start at safety, tied as the Chanticleers’ third-leading tackler with seven stops against Furman. He recorded four solo hits and assisted on three others.
Also nominated for Offensive Player of the Week: Malcolm Dixon (Charleston Southern), Matt Hazel (Coastal Carolina), Darrin Peterson (Liberty), Joey Gilkey (Presbyterian College).
Also nominated for Defensive Player of the Week: Will Hunt (Charleston Southern), Kevin Fogg (Liberty), Justin Smith (VMI).
Also nominated for Special Teams Player of the Week: Jeremiah McKie (Presbyterian College).
