An article about the walking wounded (Portland State's quarterbacks) appeared in todays (9-21) edition of the Oregonian. A few posters here seemed curious as to whom would be quarterback at Weber this week. To paraphrase, here is a list based on depth as it was at the start of the season...

1. Sawyer Smith---Hip is "banged up" but he is "all right". He could have returned to the Cal game, but the coaches kept him out. Asked if he will be ready for Montana, he said that he is expecting to play against Weber. Coach Walsh said that Smith is "day to day".

2. Tygue Howland---done for the year. Torn ligaments, possible tendon damage.

3. Rob Freeman---Earned praise from the coaches for his performance against Cal. Had to deal with three straight roughing the passer penalties from Cal in the third quarter, so it wasn't like the Bears eased up on him. Went 12 of 17 for 119 yards against the Bears. As of now, the likely starter for Weber.

4. Danny Morales---Did not play much even in the spring game, and was not expected to play this year.

Emergency QB, Tremayne Kirkland---Was an option QB in high school at Sacramento. Played tailback at UNLV for one year before transferring to PSU. Was to be our featured receiver this year and wasn't counting on playing QB.
