KENT STATE 17, LIBERTY 10 | BOX SCORE (http://www.liberty.edu/wwwadmin/globals/templates/1912/docs/stats/LUFB1301.HTM) | WATCH HIGHLIGHTS (http://www.liberty.edu/flames/index.cfm?PID=10869&NewsID=11177&TeamID=)
Kent State rallied with 10 fourth quarter points to open its 2013 season with a 17-10 victory over visiting Liberty Thursday evening at Dix Stadium. The season-opening victory extended the Golden Flashes' (1-0) home winning streak to nine games, a run that began during the 2011 season.
Liberty, opening the season against an FBS opponent for the third straight year, falls to 0-1. The Flames, who led 10-7 midway through the third quarter, were looking for their second-straight victory over a Mid-American Conference opponent after defeating Ball State, 27-23, in 2010.
The Flames got their offense going on their second drive after halftime, starting with a 58-yard pass play from Josh Woodrum to Darrin Peterson. The sophomore was able to overcome a declined pass interference call with an over-the-shoulder catch to get to the Kent State 30-yard line. Five plays later and facing a third-and-seven play from the 11-yard line, Liberty went with an empty backfield and gave Woodrum five options to look for. One of the five was able to get open as Gabe Henderson pulled down his first career touchdown reception to put the Flames up 10-7 with 7:25 left to play in the third quarter. WAKE FOREST 31, PRESBYTERIAN 7 | BOX SCORE (http://www.gobluehose.com/fls/18100/stats/football/2013/pc0829.htm)
The Presbyterian College football team’s season opener started off bright -- the visiting Blue Hose led Wake Forest 7-3 at the end of the first quarter -- but a power outage and turnovers dimmed PC’s chances at an upset as the Demon Deacons handed the much-improved Blue Hose a 31-7 defeat at BB&T Field on Thursday night.
PC’s first eight plays could not have gone better. The new-look defense held strong immediately to force a three-and-out on the first possession, giving the Blue Hose offense the ball on their own 30 yard line. On the team’s first play from scrimmage, Demarcus Rouse broke a run to the left, cut outside and danced down the sideline for a career-long 66 yards before getting tripped up at the four. Two short runs later, Tamyn Garrick looked to his right and found a wide-open Kris Hurley in a shallow part of the end zone for a one yard touchdown pass that put PC ahead, 7-0.
The margin of defeat marked the closest in a game against a Football Bowl Subdivision game for the Blue Hose. FULL STORY (http://www.gobluehose.com/ViewArticle.dbml?DB_OEM_ID=18100&ATCLID=209243089)
