CHARLESTON SOUTHERN 32, THE CITADEL 29 | BOX SCORE (http://csusports.com/sports/fball/2013-14/boxscores/20130831_2fac.xml)
The Jamey Chadwell era of Charleston Southern football began with a resounding bang on Saturday night as CSU rallied for a 32-29 win over rival The Citadel at Johnson Hagood Stadium.
Chadwell and the Bucs answered The Citadel drive for drive over the final 40 minutes to overcome a 16-0 deficit. The Bucs showed toughness, resilience, explosiveness and grit in attacking a Bulldog team that many projected to be an FCS Playoff contender.
CSU had only 30 yards on 28 plays before Malcolm Dixon connected on touchdown passes on consecutive offensive snaps to cut the deficit to 16-14 at halftime. CSU scored following a muffed punt to score just before the half and rode the momentum from 14 quick points to a lead on its opening possession of the second half. Both offenses took over in the second half, with Charleston Southern delivering the final score of the back-and-forth affair. Cameron Mitchell provided it, drilling a 29-yard field goal on the first attempt of his career to give the Bucs a 32-29 advantage with 6:01 remaining. Gardner-Webb (1-0) fell behind 21-7 11:49 to play in the third quarter, but buckled down on defense and put up 21 unanswered points for its first win over the Paladins (0-1) in four tries. Blount scored twice in the third quarter, from four yards away with 9:14 in the period and from one yard out with 5:10 left to trim the lead to 21-20. A blocked extra point on the second score kept Furman in front, but Gardner-Webb marched 88 yards on 10 plays in the fourth quarter – with Beatty hitting Kenny Cook for the second time in the game to go up 27-21 with 9:49 left. Beatty hit Seth Cranfill on a two-point conversion for what would be the final margin. FULL STORY (http://www.gwusports.com/ViewArticle.dbml?DB_LANG=C&DB_OEM_ID=10300&ATCLID=209248271)
