I wonder how this would be handled if this were the basketball or football team that was involved. Would the university levy a similar punishment?

Towson might would. They cut their baseball program despite having boosters step up to save it...

Never - if they somehow count cheerleading as a sport (and some do), you'll never see a school cut a women's team. It would wreck havoc on title IX issues....

The NCAA already rule that cheerleading couldn't be counted as a sport for Title IX purposes and it was affirmed by the courts.

As is, yes. If they added more structure to it - it could qualify for varsity sport status.

Wonderful addition to the topic xrolleyesx Woulda, coulda, shoulda. So says MPLS, and so it shall be.
If ultimate frisbee meets the proper criteria, it could also be a varsity sport...

They need to add more structure to ultimate first, but yes, it could qualify for varsity sport status.
