Purdue - Indiana State isn't good, and with Bell out they could be borderline terrible.
Western Illinois
#20 Youngstown State - I'm honestly jelly YSU gets 2 straight Pioneers to open the season with UNI having ISU and McNeese State OOC
#1 North Dakota State - starers should be out in the second...name your score game
#7 Northern Iowa - starters should be out in the second...name your score game

#8 South Dakota State - Not enough D in UND...typical Big Sky school
Kansas - Both are bad...USD is worse

From week 1 thread:

I'll be interested in the four MVFC vs. B1G/BigXII games. I'll take the MVFC in the BigXII games and the B1G in the other two games.

The rest I'll take as wins for the MVFC, though I wouldn't bet money against UC Davis or Ball St.

Correct picks: NDSU over KSU, UNI over IA St, UIUC over SIU, IU over IN St, WIU over Hampton, YSU over Dayton, USD over UC Davis and SDSU over Butler
Incorrect picks: NW St over MSU and Ball St over IL St
Week record: 8-2
Season record: 8-2

They say teams improve the most from week 1 to week 2.

Iowa lost to Northern Illinois, at home and is going to be looking to take some anger out on Missouri St. Absolutely likewise with Purdue, they have a new coach who is going to demand better performance from them than what they gave in a very bad loss at Cincinnati.

I'd like to think there's no way WIU, Youngstown, NDSU and Northern Iowa could lose. Shouldn't happen.

EIU at SIU is the best game of the bunch. EIU beat an FBS team and SIU had a chance to beat Illinois. I'll go with SIU being at home.

SDSU at UND might be a trap game for the Jacks. I'll go with SDSU, but this game is going to be used as a measuring stick of MVFC vs. Big Sky for the whole year. UND can throw the ball. Won't be surprised if they win at home.

USD will give Kansas a game. Going with the upset shocker. USD squeaks it out.

Iowa should toast Mo St. How soon until Mo St finally dismiss Allen? IIRC, Mo St hasn't qualified for the play-offs since the Gateway became the Valley.

Purdue and Kansas dismiss their respective MoValley opponents. If these were top half of the MoValley, have a shot.

The lower level schools at MoValley schools will be lopsided.

The only two games worthy of discussion are the directional ILL schools. EIU won at the "other" SDSU, and SIU challenged a B1G well. Flipped a coin, and came up EIU.

SDSU/UND - Good to be playing the not Sioux again. Think that SDSU brings to diverse an offense, and too stout a D to not get their first ever win at the Alerus. First game for the Jacks up in Grand Forks since 2002.

You think there is a 30% chance UNI loses to Drake?

Do you know something the rest of us don't?

The recent history of the series gives UNI a 99.9999999999999999999999999999999999999% chance...

Missouri State (0-1 0-0) @ Iowa (0-1) - more than 35

Indiana State (0-1 0-0) @ [B]Purdue (0-1) - Trees will be manhandled by an FBS once again... more than 21 I think

Quincy [Sub D-I] @ [B]Western Illinois (1-0 0-0) - more than 35

Morehead State (0-1) [Pioneer] @ #20 Youngstown State (1-0 0-0) - Morehead lost to an NAIA, remember? More than 28

Ferris State [Sub D-I] @ #1 North Dakota State (1-0 0-0) - more than 28

Drake (0-1) [Pioneer] @ #7 Northern Iowa (1-0 0-0) - Drake lost to another NAIA. More than 21

#12 Eastern Illinois (1-0) [Ohio Valley] @ #30 Southern Illinois (0-1 0-0) - Really a toss-up. SDSU (CA) mishandled the ball in their game with EIU, while Illinois surged in the 4Q to tumble SIU. Less than 7

#8 South Dakota State (1-0 0-0) @ North Dakota (1-0) - 7 to 14

South Dakota (1-0 0-0) @ [B]Kansas (0-0) [BigXII] - More than 28

Probably a computer generated score prediction, which is always generous to the loosing teams side. Seems like no matter who the school is or how outclassed they might be, a 5% chance is the lowest they give out, so the 30% for UNI to loose is probably more around 10% in reality.

Clenz,

I happen to feel the same way about the schedule. It is a waste of money for fans and doesn't make for a good match. There was an article written in the Youngstown Vindicator that discusses why YSU is unable to schedule MAC teams, but other MVFC schools can. YSU would be better to fill the OOC schedule with MAC teams or just play a full MVFC schedule since the MVFC has now expanded. I hate it (no offense to PFL schools).

9-1 for me last week (should've known better than to pick Missouri St I guess).

Missouri St @ Iowa - Iowa looks to be pretty bad but they'll still win this one easily.
Indiana St @ Purdue - Another bad Big Ten team catches a bad MVFC team, at least they are without Shakir Bell.
Quincy @ Western Illinois - This could very well be WIU's last win of the 2013 season.
Morehead State @ Youngstown St - This should be a shellacking against a bad PFL team.
Ferris St @ North Dakota St - A letdown is inevitable but too many seniors on this Bison squad for it to be more than a first quarter blip. Starters are out by halftime.
Drake @ Northern Iowa - Similar to NDSU, UNI is bound for a slight letdown but they still win comfortably.
Eastern Illinois @ Southern Illinois - SIU's pass defense really stuggled against the Illini and that's EIU's strength so I think this one goes to the Panthers.
South Dakota St @ North Dakota - NDSU's new rival versus NDSU's old rival. I like SDSU better so I'm picking them plus I think UND will be overmatched by SDSU's power run game and UND's offense will find it a bit more difficult to move the ball against a good FCS defense.
South Dakota @ Kansas - I was glad to see USD pick up a win last week, hopefully they can keep this one close and continue improving.

Agreed, people who say "not to be a dick" or "hate to be a dick" are dicks, and enjoy being dicks.

Pretty standard picks for this week. Unfortunately I don't think any of our teams that are playing FBS schools are good enough at this point to take any of them down. EIU @ SIU is probably the only close game. EIU is probably a slightly better team in general, but I think that SIU might be angry for letting last week's game get away from them. Add in that the game is at SIU, and I think SIU has a slight advantage. We (WIU), YSU, NDSU, UNI should all pretty much demolish the teams we're playing, and SDSU at UND might be a bit close for a bit, but there's not many defenses that can stop Zenner (NDSU may be just about the only one), and it won't end up a close game.

deez_na
September 3rd, 2013, 04:06 PM
NDSU had a better chance of beating K State then UND has of beating SDSU. Are you guys serious? UND has had a terrible defense recently and will not contain Zenner by any means. NDSU is about as solid as a middle of the pack FBS team and K state just outside the top 25 isn't as far fetched as it is for UND to be a #7 ranked SDSU. I'll be back here after the game this weekend and then we can talk about that game.

Eh, its a new season and it certainly isn't impossible UND is being undervalued or that SDSU is being over valued, or both. To say UND has 0% chance to win a home game is pretty ridiculous.

I still think SDSU will win, but that doesn't mean Darell has to be **** on for picking his own team in week 2 when they are 1-0 lol.

I've watched UND the past few seasons since I live up here and with Mussman as the head coach, it's highly unlikely they win. This team has like 3 really solid players in Galloday, Hardin and jackson. Fresh QB, small running back. I'm really not seeing how anybody could possibly think UND would win this game. I'll be shocked if they are in this game by the 4th quarter

I'm thinking about changing my EIU/SIU pick with the news of top SIU RB being kicked off the team

Which RB? McCall? He didn't really do anything at Illinois, but that is interesting.

As far as McCall is concerned, I'm not a big fan of dividing 30 or so carries among four guys---we still have four star Ken Malcome (6' 220), three star Malcom Agnew (5'9" 205) and Tay Willis.

I like Willis--even though he's only 5'8" 170 he is strong enough (335 bench) and fast enough to be an every down back. Agnew when healthy is the best of all worlds for SIU with speed (4.45) and strength. I think Malcome will come along as a power back. By the way former Saluki star RB Larry Warner (2008) believes Willis SHOULD be the starter.

16 carries 118 yards(7.4 yards per carry) 2 TD's...yes he had the two fumbles.

However, you don't think that loss had more to do with letting your QB break out and run for 88 yards...which if I remember from the radio broadcast was more than his season total through that point (possibly career).

It had nothing to do with the fact we were without 2 starting linebackers?
The fact we were playing a 3rd string freshman DE?
The blocked punt for a TD for SIU that cut the lead from 15 to 8?
The fact we averaged 20 yards per punt gross and 11 net yards per punt?
The fact this was the end of a stretch of Wisconsin, Iowa, NDSU, YSU, and SIU - with SDSU the next week with 3 of those games ending in losses that could/should have been W's deflating the **** out of the team at that point?

The fumble for a TD from DJ didn't help, but it's not his fault we lost.

****, look at the stats of the game....15 of your points weren't scored by your offense...against a defense that was completely depleted in the front 7.

It's funny to see that SDSU has to win no way can UND win...same thing was said last season before Montana left the Alerus Center with their heads down. SDSU is 0-1 in the Alerus so no real history in the building, not sure on their record in domes but NDSU has won and lost against them. UND changed defensive coaches and players are a year maturer so our defense could've improved (hard to say against a team like Valpo). I know they are expecting the biggest crowd since 2008 with around 11,000 expected. It's also Potato Bowl Week so the whole week is one big pep rally so everyone will be on a giant high going into the game. UND has a new into music, Welcome To The Jungle to add to the electricity of the building. If anything it will be a close game based on a couple factors..can UND stop Zenner and can UND establish a running game if both happens UND could blowout (yes blowout) SDSU like they did last season at Sac St, if its a track meet we could see overtime, and if Zenner runs all over the field it will be over by halftime. Should be exciting!!

Jacks are a really good DEFENSIVE team. I'll be surprised if UND's offense gets any great production, especially on the ground. This year the Jacks OFFENSE will be much more balanced between runs and passing. Sumner hit 11 different receivers for 300+ yds last week in 3 qtrs. IMHO, he'll be the QB threat that was #3 in the Frosh POTY than the shell of a passer he was last season. Zenner will get his yards on fewer carries the season than under the workhorse conditions that he endured last season.

DJ, over on UNI is a similar, if not better RB, than Zenner. He looked AMAZING in the Iowa St game.

As always, best of success to the MoValley teams this weekend.

Youngstown -- Another Pioneer victory for the Guins
NDSU -- No real explanation needed
EIU -- Want to pick the Salukis, but just think the Panthers have too much
SDSU -- Could be a good game think the Jacks will be too much for the Sioux
Kansas -- Would be nice to see USD win, but do not think they can pull it off

I'd be surprised if SDSU doesn't win, but not totally shocked. I just don't think UND can turn their defense around in 1 season. Their running game was non-existent last year as well. Those deficiencies do not bode well for them in these types of games. I expect SDSU to run at will on them and keep Hardin off the field. If ND can get a few big pass plays and special teams scores it may be close. The only hope for UND is a shootout, but I see it as an SDSU win by at least 2 scores.

I would expect Kansas to win this game as they are a Big12 school and USD was just bad last year. That said, USD is much improved this season and this is KU's first game in which they are breaking in a lot of juco starters. There may be a lot of miscues and breakdowns that allow USD to stay in this game for a while and pull it out in the end. FWIW, although USD had a bad record last year, after watching them play UCD last weekend I would say this USD squad is better than the one that beat Minnesota on the road a few years back. Anything can happen.

The other game of personal interest is SDSU at UND. I know SDSU is favored to win this game and on paper they should. It's just that something happens when South Dakota schools have to go into Grand Forks and play. They usually return to SoDak with a loss and can't figure out how it happened. A few years ago USD went up there with what I thought was a far superior team and lost to UND. Still can't figure that one out and that was one of those games that was a big factor in our recent coaching change. Bad things happen in the Al, bad things. That's why I'm picking UND in the upset.

They really have falled off. They used to be good when we first joined the GWFC (2008) but last few years and probably this year is going to be a long one for them.

I'm aware of that. I am looking at USD's overall size, speed, skill, and physical play compared to the team that beat Minnesota. That team certainly had some talented players on offense but I don't think they could stand toe to toe with this year's version of the Coyotes after Joe Glenn has had a year to work on this team. I wasn't really comparing them to UCD.

I see.

I guess I have a harder time comparing one team to the same team of a different year playing different levels of competition.

To me the Nick Mertens era teams vs cupcakes looked like some of our most talented offenses, our lines were destroying them we had a near 100 yard pass and a 100 yard rush, etc. but that simply wasn't the case when we played a real team.

For sure though, the rest of the season will reveal whether USD is drastically improved.

I think that makes me 16-3 overall.

Morehead State is a really bad team. There was an extreme difference in the athletes. Difficult to describe the extreme of the mismatch. YSU was trying not to score. I felt bad for some of the kids on Morehead State's team. A lot of them got hurt. There were several big hits and many injury time outs. They should have called the game at half-time or better yet, this game should not be scheduled.

I am happy that the YSU student section bailed at halftime. I could hear the chants "We want more head" If morehead was competitive I would think their chant comical, but not when their kids were being physically abused by the 2nd and 3rd team players from YSU. That was one of the ugliest games I have ever seen.
