Agreed, but everyone doesn't have the same philosophy. A couple of years ago when SHSU was not getting any play at the start of the season some of those same style of voting philosophies were putting SHSU in early enough to have them appear in the top 25 quicker than any other polls so we'll probably have to go with our differing philosophies and hope the overall product remains at the top of the heap. I say that in spite of the fact that I completely agree with you.

More people were impressed with EWU's win than with NDSU's. I was not but I think most people must have been more surprised by what EWU did than what NDSU did. I'd have to say that is a major amount of credit given to NDSU and rightfully so.

You could almost say the most significant loss went to Wofford. They got destroyed by a potential big-bowl team and plummeted through the rankings because teams either scheduled cupcakes (Sam Houston State) or shot the moon against FBS teams (Eastern Washington, NDSU, EIU, etc.)

I also thought the biggest loss was Wofford's. I watched some of that game against Baylor and they didn't look too good. Only the 1st game though.

Overall, the poll looks good.

While I appreciate the regard for my Pokes, I think 11's too high for us right now...

USF was 3-9 last year...I wouldn't read too much into that first game...If USF does something against Michigan State, I might be inclined to change my position...I'm thinking 21 or 22 would be about right for us, right now...

To put it in our southern vernacular, "We ain't played nobody yet!"

Jordan, it looks good! The only thing I'd quibble with you on is Sam Houston and UCA. I'm not sure I'd penalize Sam Houston just yet. I'd wait and see how they do against A&M this weekend....Absent a loss, I wouldn't move the Fighting Binturongs down below the Bears until they prove they need to be below the bears or until UCA does something spectacular to warrant leap frogging them....

But, that's just me..and I don't do the poll!

I wouldnt place the Bears that high yet either. But a win over FBS Colorado, Missouri State and Tennessee-Martin might solidify them as top 5.

Then cometh the Cowboys. Thats the biggie to start the year! A loss or close game keeps them top 10 but with more to prove. IMO.

Im one of those realists with a huge Bear fire lit under me! Colorado will show us a good meter on this Bear team.

Does anyone know if the Incarnate Word game is considered a division I win or DII?

My philosophy is that it is week 1 of a new year and I was more impressed with their win. There is plenty of time to adjust as we see who really deserves to be ranked in the next few weeks.

I voted NDSU #1 but mostly because of their colors.

These polls will balance out after week 3 when we have an actual sample size. For example- W&M, McNeese St, and SIU weren't in the top 40 but all looked better than some top 25 teams.

After the FBS and Incarnate Word schools are in the rearview, we'll start conference play and that's when we'll know what's up.

Also, I like the post(er) that included "games watched." Good idea...wish our govt was that transparent.

The University of South Dakota received 19 votes in the TSN poll and now is on the ORV list for this poll as well. Come on people. Pay attention to who you're voting for. Also, I had Wofford at 25 last week, and thought the loss to Baylor was a little too harsh. I think Baylor would beat Kansas St or Oregon St. Baylor is a better team than KSU or OSU. I was not surprised with the results of EWU, NDSU or the Wofford game. As the season progresses. Mine. I didn't so much penalize Sam as much as I wanted to reward the teams who started the season off with major victories. I didn't expect Wofford to beat Baylor, but I did expect them to at least keep it close for a half. W&M and 'Nova were able to face tough BCS competition and still look good on the field, not to mention UNI, EWU, and NDSU beating BCS teams and Towson, Eastern Illinois, and McNeese taking out FBS teams from the better non-BCS conferences.

That's great, but EWU was also featured. I'm not saying NDSU doesn't deserve the exposure they received, just that Gil's comment about NDSU having the most exposure isn't true.

I would say that would be true if you guys won by one score. But the fact is, there are many reasons USF should've taken you down. And most of the time, even the low level FBS teams school the FCS teams. For you guys to dominate them the way you did with their additional 22 schollies was quite eye opening and impressive to me at least. 11 seems very appropriate IMO.

NDSU's game was also on national TV. I don't think the exposure EWU got is in the same ballpark as NDSU.

Driving home Saturday I heard the radio call of NDSU's final TD six or seven on times on XM radio. NDSU benefited a lot from being one of the only games going on Friday. EWU had to go up against some big FBS match ups.

I was under the impression that with the new FBS playoff system starting next year that the American was considered part of the 'Group of 5' and does not have a guaranteed major bowl placement like Big 10, Big XII, SEC, ACC, and PAC-12 do.

Hey I don't want to take anything away from EWU, they had a great win and received some solid exposure from it. But the problem for them was the game wasn't widely available nationally and it was up against some huge FBS games.

That is correct...the AAC is going to be lumped with the MAC, SBC, MWC and CUSA. It isn't really a BCS conference anymore...they just inherited the bid of a now defunct BCS conference for one season.

Holy cow, I am impressed, you watched 14 FCS games. Kudos, I really would struggle to find them all. You should take credit for the reason this poll is the best.

I did not watch 14 I watched more than 17. Some of the teams did not show up in my top 25.

off the top of my head UCD @ USD was a game I watched in which neither team showed up on my poll, there were a few others.

NDSU playing on Friday night really opened up my Saturday to watching games, along with the couple I caught on Thursday.

Louisville and Cincinnati are damn good. In fact, I'd put those two up against the top two from every conference not named the SEC and PAC12. I think Houston could end up being solid and you never know about ECU. Heck, Temple looked respectable against ND on Saturday. The bottom of the conference is truly horrific....

The MWC looks to be really down this year....

Who's arguing over who is #1 and who is #2? NDSU got 81 of 83 first place votes (97.6%). That's about as unanimous a poll as we'll see this year except the season ending poll. The squabbling has been over whose win was better, bigger, garnered the most national attention, etc...

We have a pretty good gauntlet of UNI, Sam Houston, and UCA three games in a row to through in the middle of our schedule. And, we have Weber St. to play right before UNI and they looked pretty good beating SFA Saturday night.

Doc, I agree with you. I did give McNeese some love at #25 because their win was impressive and dominating. IMO, the Grizzlies received the biggest jump for me. The fact that they controlled nearly every minute of that game and while the D may have bent, they didn't break. It looked to me like Montana has returned with ferver to the top FCS echelon.

Although EW's win was against a FBS school, I still see too many issues to list them as one of the well-balanced top-10 teams in the country. We all remember the MN Vikings in the late 90's with that same attitude of "we'll just outscore everyone and not worry about playing defense". We saw how that turned out...disappointed Vikings fans year after year. All it will take is one or two games for them to be "off" and the season's over.

I had McNeese in my Top 25 in the preseason, and after watching a large part of the game on ESPN3 I had no qualms about putting them in my Top 10. As much as the McNeese State people are trying to play this off as not all that significant, the truth is their win was different than all the others. They didn't just win, they pounded the living piss out of a team that is, still, a BCS team.

I've been following FCS for a long time, and though I've seen a bunch of these "upsets" I've never seen such a thorough beatdown. They had more than a 3 touchdown lead at halftime. Halftime! This upset did not follow the usual script at all.

Vioator could have easily - easily! - gotten a couple more TDs and run up the score. It was so remarkable that I dug up the ESPN3 feed to watch it twice.

I'm not well-informed about the current FCS landscape yet to vote in the poll. I might start after week 3. However, the USF team that McNeese throttled on Saturday might just go 0-fer in some FCS conferences, from what I saw. We'll see if they rebound against Michigan State, but based on their performance on Saturday I wouldn't necessarily give McNeese a huge bump-up in the AGS poll. It was fun to watch, though! xnodx

I have to believe he left MSU out as an oversight.

I don't have them top 5 either. Picked them 8th, one behind the Griz. Was impressed by UM holding the SoCon's #2 scoring offense, total offense and passing offense to only 6 points, and holding one of the best WR corps to 205 yards (granted Price didn't play).

I do think we have potential to be a top 5 offense, but I need to see the D perform against tougher opponents.

MSU was an oversight. Mea Culpa. I had to fix several mistakes on my ballot (teams on the ballot twice, forgetting to put someone I intended to put in the top 10, etc.) and I didn't have my ballot planned out ahead of time because I was in a rush.

Here is my basic philosophy on poll voting. For the preseason poll all weight is on (1) how a team did last year and (2) any coaching changes as well as what players a team has returning the next year. On week 1 most of the weight is still on this. Let's face it, the best predictor of how a team will do in the future is in the recent past. Many people basically do the same thing but won't admit it. Gradually as the season goes on last year becomes less and less of a consideration. I don't believe (as I already explained) in giving teams huge jumps because they looked good on week 1. Montana was 5-6 last year and not ranked on my preseason ballot. There is ample opportunity for UM to get into the top 5 in my ballot.

I can't remember what game it was, it may have been last night FSU/Pitt game. I've seen so many games this weekend it's hard to know. The announcers were talking about filling out the top 25 poll. Whether a team should bounce a lot in the beginning based on present games and performance, or how much weight you give a team from last year. I immediately thought of the AGS poll, because it's the same argument we have here every year. :D

Exactly, we all have our own philosophies on it for sure. The first couple of weeks you will see a team left a ballot as well and those people quickly go "ah hell, my bad" and make corrections going forward. Somewhat similar to the teams themselves.

We're all knocking a little off season rust off right now.

Thank you to all that voted. It was a shortened period with abnormal obstacles and a great deal of you still made the effort so big props to all of you.
