I'll go with all your picks Darell, accept..... I consider the Montana vs App game to be dead even, and will therefore go with my Big Sky homies, Montana.

I didn't know who to choose in that one. I flipped a coin....App won the flip.

Thursday 8/29

Southern Utah @ S. Alabama Southern Utah will be very tough
Valparaiso @ North Dakota North Dakota will not lose this one at home against a non-scholarship FCS

Friday 8/30

NAU @ Arizona Arizona not likely to lose to it's little brother from Flagstaff

Saturday 8/31

UC Davis @ South Dakota Home Team Advantage
Langston @ Northern Colorado FCS vs. NAIA

San Diego at Cal Poly Cal Poly vs. very good non-scholarship FCS program

Southern Utah @ S. Alabama - I think SUU is a bit of a darkhorse this year. Everyone thinks with Sorensen gone, they are toast... but Cantu could be the real deal. Still need better production at RB though. But SA is awful.
Valparaiso @ North Dakota - Good way to break in a new QB at home.
Monmouth @ Montana State - Even with several key defenders out for the Cats, I don't see this game being closer than 10 points.
Sac State @ San Jose State - Sac always plays well in these games, and it's in their same state... but I think SJSU has too much offensive firepower for Sac.
E. Oregon @ Portland St - Meh

Friday 8/30

NAU @ Arizona - NAU always plays well in these interstate games... for a half. No different this year.

Saturday 8/31

UC Davis @ South Dakota - Another team I think could ruin someone's season, UC Davis opens against a USD team that was awful least year.
Langston @ Northern Colorado - If UNC is going to be good this year, they should crush whoever this team is.
Eastern Washington @ Oregon State - OSU is much improved, and EWU is reloading. EWU will be a force this year, but not this game.
San Diego at Cal Poly - Poly lost a lot but should be a contender agian this year.
SFA @ Weber State - Weber is just in a funk right now. Things looked up when they hired offensive guru Robin Pflugard, but all of the sudden the NCAA is sniffing around. Can't buy a break down there.
App St @ Montana - Until I see proof that UM is better in the secondary, and JJ has returned to his late 2011 form, I have to go with App here. ASU has arguable the best WRs in FCS this year, and UM got torched several times in the air last year.

I will be interested in seeing how one of our hometown kids from Winnemucca does against portland st. He talked to montana his senior year but got no offer and ended up at eastern oregon. we have another kid in the same boat that i expect will land at eou next year too.

Thursday 8/29

Southern Utah @ S. Alabama Don't know much about South Alabama, but what I've seen makes me think these 2 teams should be close. S. Utah lost their qb, so I'll pick the home team.
Valparaiso @ North Dakota This game shouldn't be close.
Monmouth @ Montana State Everybody sees the field.
Sac State @ San Jose State 2 scores minimum
E. Oregon @ Portland St FCS vs D2

Friday 8/30

NAU @ Arizona Although NAU is a decent FCS team, they still won't be able to match up against AZ

Saturday 8/31

UC Davis @ South Dakota 2 teams who didn't play well last year, I feel like Davis has more potential though
Langston @ Northern Colorado Don't know what a Langston is, but it's going to lose
Eastern Washington @ Oregon State EWU will be somewhat competitive, but they still lose
San Diego at Cal Poly Shouldn't be very close
SFA @ Weber State Better team wins
App St @ Montana UM has a qb who hasn't taken a snap in over a year, coaches who seem lost, and a secondary that seemed to be trying to compete with the UND defense for worst in show.

Let's put a final score guess with these games too.
Thursday 8/29

Southern Utah 13 @ S. Alabama 38
FBS at home and Southern UT no longer has Sorenson.

Valparaiso 20 @ North Dakota 34
ND is at home and should not have too much trouble with this game.

Monmouth 24 @ Montana State 39
MSU is at home and should not have too much trouble with this game.

Sac State 32 @ San Jose State 38
FBS takes it, but not before Sac St puts a big scare into them.

E. Oregon 6 @ Portland St 35
PSU easily takes this game at home.

Friday 8/30

NAU 35 @ Arizona 48
In the past NAU has done a decent job in the 1st half against in-state FBS teams, but the depth of a PAC-12 FBS will previal.

Saturday 8/31

UC Davis 16 @ South Dakota 27
SD is at home and UC Davis will still be adjusting to the new HC.

Langston 6 @ Northern Colorado 27
NC should take care of business here.

Eastern Washington 17 @ Oregon State 42
PAC-12 FBS team will take the W here.

San Diego 20 at Cal Poly 38
SD will give CP a scare in the first half, but CP will rule the 2nd half.

SFA 35 @ Weber State 24
BBQ had a horibble season last year. I expect them to be improved, but I think SFA will be a tough team this year.

App St 30 @ Montana 31
The game of the week!!! I expect a close battle that may not be decided till the last play of the game.

It's been a while since NDSU was in the Great West and therefore been a awhile since I've kept up on Southern Utah. But back then (in the mid 2000's) that was a program with low scholarship numbers and a low budget. I remember reading that they had to bus to their away games even if they were in California and it was a 17 hour drive! They felt very DII, at that time.

How are they doing now? Because I would not bet money on a program like that to go down to Mobile, AL and beat a team with 85 scholarships - I don't care what conference they play in.

I see last year they did have some nice wins. Coaching staff looks very young.

As far as the games go, none of the Thurs or Fri games look to be competitive at first blush. The SUU and Sac St games might be, though SJSU was really good last year and without more info on SUU (see above post) I'm inclined to think those mountain boys will think the air down in Mobile like soup and will wilt in the heat. So I'll likely go against those two. The rest I'm assuming will be easy wins for UND, MT St, PDX St and Arizona.

I picked SD over Davis in the MVFC week 1 thread, so sticking with that here. I assume Poly and UNC will win.

The remaining three games look interesting. I know EW is supposed to be an elite FCS program now (in spit of their stadium, which I know is going to be fixed) but Oregon St is an AP top 25. Weber and Montana both host good FCS teams.

Give me Weber and Montana at home and Oregon St.

South Alabama 21 Southern Utah 17: possible FCS over FBS?
North Dakota 60 Valpo 27: Crusaders among FCS worst...
Montana State 41 Monmonth 24: good game for 3 quarters...
SJSU 35 Sac St. 24: should be a solid game...
Portland St 42 E. Oregon 7: the Vikings better win easily...
Arizona 48 NAU 17: too much RichRod...
UNC 52 Langston 16: cupcake start...
OSU 45 EWU 20: eagles in over their heads...
Cal Poly 30 San Diego 13: solid opener for 'stangs...
SFA 38 Weber State 27 :Jacks could be a sleeper team...
Montana 34 App St. 30 : going to be an awesome game....

The UM secondary did fine against App St last year, when the secondary was healthy. (Note that UM, with a frosh qb who wasn't known for throwing, threw for more than App St.) The UM secondary is a year older and improved. The UM front 7 is a year older, and the best in FCS. Johnson is BETTER now than he was in his late 2011 form. More focused, more accurate, much stronger, and stronger arm.

Just out of curiosity, how do you know he is better? Do you think that is something that can be gleaned just from watching pre-season practices?

I'll piggyback on this and give you a bump. My predictions for the first week (8-31). I usually use the scoreboard abbreviation for the Big Sky schools and spell out the name of the non-Big Sky school. For instance, if North Dakota was playing Notre Dame, North Dakota would be abbreviated UND while Notre Dame would be spelled out. The only exception I use is for Sacramento State which I abbreviate as "Sac State". Here's hoping this season will be better for me at picking the winners. Here they are.

San Diego at CP---The Mustangs begin their season at home against the Pioneer Conference's San Diego team. The Mustangs have a lot returning, but still have some big shoes to fill. Still, they should be able to get by San Diego...CP 31, San Diego 24.

EWU at Oregon State---The Eagles do not scare easy against the big boys in the FBS. However, Oregon State is ranked and are not overlooking the Eagles, as they are still smarting over the loss to Sacramento State a couple years ago...Oregon State 31, EWU 16.

Appalachian State at UM---The game of the week involving a Big Sky school. The Grizzlies are anxious to put last season behind them and welcome Appalachian State to the loud Wash-Griz stadium. Should be a great game...Appalachian State 28, UM 25.

Monmouth at MSU---The Bobcats can't get out of fall camp soon enough and welcome the former Northeast member, Monmouth to their cozy home. They are hoping to make it through the game healthy, for sure...MSU 48, Monmouth 14.

Valparaiso at UND---The former Sioux are hoping this season they will make some noise in the conference and start at home against the Pioneer Conference's own Valparaiso squad. Great game for Hardin to run wild...UND 52, Valparaiso 14.

NAU at Arizona---Last season the Lumberjacks opened with Arizona State, now this season they go to the other in-state Pac-12 school, Arizona. They have the power to keep it close, will they be able to squeeze out a win?...Arizona 32, NAU 20.

Langston at UNC---The Bears actually enter the season expecting good things in the conference. They welcome the NAIA's own Langston squad this weekend. Hopefully they get the win this time, and not like a couple years ago...UNC 35, Langston 7.

Eastern Oregon at PSU---This is the third straight year the Vikings start the year against the NAIA, playing Carroll College last year and Southern Oregon the year before. Should be the same outcome...PSU 38, Eastern Oregon 13.

Sac State at San Jose State---With their success against the FBS, mainly the Pac-12, the Hornets have to feel good about opening against San Jose State. Problem? San Jose State is not in the Pac-12...San Jose State 28, Sac State 22.

SUU at South Alabama---The Thunderbirds have had the same quarterback for the last three years. Now they need to find a new one, before they head out to the FBS's transition team, South Alabama...South Alabama 35, SUU 19.

UCD at South Dakota---Two teams rebuilding and two teams hoping for success, next year. For now the Aggies head on the road to face South Dakota...UCD 22, South Dakota 19.

Stephen F Austin at WSU---Things are looking better for the Wildcats who are eager to put last season behind them. They bring in the Southland's Stephen F Austin team. They had to wait until late October for their first win last year, can they get a win early? Well, not this one...Stephen F Austin 24, WSU 21.

Southern Utah 17 @ S. Alabama 28 No Sorenson, no win.
Valparaiso 21 @ North Dakota 48 Valpo should be easy prey for UND.
Monmouth 13 @ Montana State 42 Same as above.
Sac State 24 @ San Jose State 34 No luck for Sac St against FBS this year. SJSU isn't the 3-9 OSU from 2011 or the 1-11 CU team from last year that the Hornets squeaked by each year.
E. Oregon 9 @ Portland St 34 PSU playing down against NAIA school.

Friday 8/30

NAU 20 @ Arizona 34 NAU playing up against big brother.

Saturday 8/31

UC Davis 21 @ South Dakota 17 One of only 2 games that were tough to pick.
Langston 13 @ Northern Colorado 34 UNC playing down against NAIA foe.
Eastern Washington 21 @ Oregon State 38 EWU gets a top 25 FBS foe to start the year off in a bad way. Another tough year of early scheduling may severely hurt playoff hopes, much like 2011.
San Diego 20 at Cal Poly 35 Poly should easily handle a non-scholly PFL team, even with the loss of their QB
SFA 38 @ Weber State 17 Rebuilding year for BBQ
App St 27 @ Montana 31 The other tough one to pick. The Griz were in it till the end last year. Now, with their own JJ at the helm and at their own loud home and not the Rock, gotta go Griz. Will be a whale of a game. Have a wedding to go to, so will have to DVR it and hope to not hear about the game til I can get back and watch it Sunday.

Week 1 Predictions:

CSUS @ San Jose State: Three times in a row? I don't think so. SJSU is coming off probably one of the best seasons in school history. They return 13 starters from that 11-2 team that only lost to 12-2 Stanford and 11-2 Utah State. They're coach left for the Black Hole in Boulder for money and a desire for embarrassment, I imagine. However, they do have probably the best quarterback you've never heard of in David Fales. He gets his conference offensive player of the year hopes off to a great start in this one. Spartans beat the Honeybees 45-10.

Southern Utah @ South Alabama: Brad Sorensen made the best out of a bad situation with the inexperienced receiving corps last season. Yes, they return a lot at the WR position, but things will be a lot different without a future pro throwing to them. It may be a rocky start for SUU. United States of America 34 Tbirds 13

Valparaiso @ North Dakota: Valpo's defense was so terrible last season, they allowed 45 points per game to an awful schedule. Yes, North Dakotans lost both their starting and backup QBs to graduation. However, it will still be open season in this game. Flickertails 55 Crusaders 7

Monmouth @ Montana State: They have some question marks at the linebacker position, but I don't think State struggles too much in this one. Kittens 45 Hawks 14

Eastern Oregon @ Portland State: Come on, PSU! What's with all the NAIA teams??? At least Carroll and SOU were quality NAIA programs. This one could get ugly fast. The Park Block Bombers take it to the Mountaineers 48-6.

Northern Arizona @ Regular Arizona: NAU has had some trouble against their two FBS rivals the last two seasons. Bringing an unseasoned quarterback into Tuscon to face a defense that returns almost everyone is never a good sign. U of A runs away with this one. Wildcats 57 Lumberjills 6

Cal Davis @ South Dakota: It seems everyone is putting little faith in the Aggies this season. Bottom three in all the polls and to many people on this site as well. I don't see it that way. Yes, they lose their long time coach, but they return 2/3 of their starters including the stat leaders of their offense. Last season, even though the Big Sky doesn't play any defense the Aggies had SDakSt and their all-star running back on the ropes until the 4th quarter in a 12-8 road loss. I think they'll bring a similar prowess into Vermillion except this time coming out with a win over the Coyotes. I don't think it'll be a cupcake Colgate game for USD. Aggies 27 Yotes 20.

Langston? @ Northern Colorado: I've never heard of Langston, but seeing that they have both Bacone and Incarnate Word on their schedule, they must be somewhere down south. I'm guessing they won't be a problem for the improving team from Greeley, but you never know. Bearcubs 41 Langston Hughes High School 0

Eastern Washington @ Oregon State: This is not Washington State, a team that has won 12 games in five seasons, a team that Eastern still lost to last season. This is Oregon State, an every so often Pac-10/12 contender. I think this will be quite the tough opener for Adams and crew. Beavers 48 Savages 14

San Diego @ Cal Poly: Cal Poly has been in a quarterback battle all summer, but a friendly PFL defense will be a great chance for Moraga to get game comfortable with the offense. I think this game goes a lot like last season's battle. It could be a prequel to a future 2013 playoff matchup as well. Fillies 41 Toreros 13

Stephen Fuller Austin @ Weber State: I hear that things aren't going well down in Ogden right now. That could be just a bunch of rumors, but I was assuming this would be a nice offensive showing for SFA anyways. Lumberjacks 45 Mormon Kittens 20

Never comfortable predicting the Griz games even when they're playing Fort Lewis. So that will be the end of the predictions, but it should be a dandy at Wa-Griz this weekend! Not too many teams can say they've played a college football game at night in Missoula, but App St will do it for the second time. Go Griz!

Thursday

E. Oregon 19-49 Portland St. — Second-straight Frontier Conference opener for the Viks xeyebrowx

Sac State 21-49 San Jose — The Spartans are actually good now

Suutah 13-38 SallyBama — The fully-FBS Jaguars are better this year, the T-Birds aren't

Monmouth 17-37 Montana St. — The Hawks obviously aren't a non-DI, but they still have no chance in Bozeman

Valpo 21-63 NoDak — The No-Nicks entertain one of the few teams that's more defenseless than Idaho State

Friday

NAU 24-48 Arizona — Arizona may not be the shootout artists they were last year, but they can still out-talent NAU

Saturday

EWU 14-44 Oregon St. — There won't be any Beaver-pounding this weekend

San Diego 17-35 Cal Poly — The 'Stangs should obviously beat the PFL favorites, but they'll have to be careful

UC Davis 17-24 SoDak — A Measurable Modicum of Manifest Mediocrity in the Mdakota Mdome

SFA 41-24 Weber — Fun Fact!: Weber hasn't played a non-DI since 2008

App State 24-37 Montana — App's run D has been weak for years and they're moving to a 3-4—not a good combo

Langston 14-45 NoCo — Fun Fact!: Langston is the western-most HBCU

7-5 for the week, pretty sad start for the season, although the Big Sky as a whole went 9-3 this first weekend. Going to be pretty crazy this year.

3 out of those 5 I got right. In a backwards way I basically nailed the MSU score...

I'll take an 8-3 start.....for reason I skipped the USD UC Davis game...

You said your thinking was pretty darn good, but those five I mentioned didn't match your description at all. Was the opposite.
