View Full Version : Furman @ North Carolina

Bad start for Furman. UNC has the ball, and scores a TD on a 58-yard screen pass on 3rd and long.

EVEN WORSE! Furman fumbles the ensuing kickoff at its own 9 yard line. First and goal Tarheels at the 9. Bad mojo.

Both teams have finally each punted for the first time. UNC leads 24-14, Furman ball with 1:20 left in the first half.

It will be interesting to see if Gray comes back out as he was hit hard at the end of the last drive. He has looked great today.

24-14 at the half. I've been impressed with the last 27 minutes of play...the first 3 left a lot to be desired.

Furman gets the second half kickoff. A score to start off the half could make this an interesting game.

This year may be the best-suited Furman team we've ever had for this offense. Gray is an effective option runner and Felton looks good in the AP slot in the former GSU offense.

If anything, the worst thing to come out of this game could be injuries. Felton limped off after scoring his 4th TD, all-conference LB Andrew Jones has been hurt, WR R.J. Webb (leading receiver tonight) is out of the game, etc.

This game has been a great coming-out party for Renaldo Gray, and I feel much more confident in having him lead the team the rest of the season.

Your defense just ran out of gas. Great effort and the Furman offense finally came around tonight. The UNC radio guys were talking about how confused the Tar Heel defense was, trying to figure out if Furman was going to run the option, pound the ball with Felton, or pass. Those 22 extra schollies won this game.

Interesting day for Gray and his family. His cousin, freshman Armanti Edwards, passed 15-29-2 for 203 yards and a TD and ran five times for 49 yards in his first college start as Appalachian State won 41-0.

In my experience, the ACC has some of the worst officials in college football (the Big Sky and MEAC are some of the worst in I-AA in my opinion). The ACC doesn't send its best guys to game like this and they know if they want to work at these places again, they better take care of the home team. I have seen too many screwball things happen in these SoCon-ACC matchups to think these folks are playing straight.

That was a terrible call! The angle of the replays was deceiving, but he clearly touched it right on the line.. There was no conclusive evidence he touched it early.. Typical calls againest the lower division team...

That's the key. It has to be CONCLUSIVE evidence to overturn. It wasn't that likely that Furman would have scored in the final play, but to deny them the chance is awful. Furman fans know as well as ANY school from experience that strange things can happen in the final seconds.

Still, Furman's defense didn't get enough stops. The refs are part of home field advantage... it doesn't make their calls right but it's hardly a surprise. The call in this game is nowhere near as bad as the onside call in the Oklahoma-Oregon game (directly leading to a miracle Oregon win at home).

I think, for I-AA purposes, the main thing to take out of this game is that Furman's offense is back. There still might be inconsistency but Gray was dominant as was the running game. The O-line is coming together after a slow start.

On the other hand, this is a step back for the defense. I think part of the problem is that Furman hadn't seen a good QB yet... Sexton executed very well throughout the game. Pass D was a problem last year and that will need some more work this year. Run D is solid.

Another case of ACC refs messing up I-AA games. I would like to see NC State play ASU in BOONE, with a SOCON crew. Or, UNC play Furman @ Furman, with a SOCON crew. I'm not saying it would change the scores, but then again maybe it would! The Rock is a hard place to win at, Charlie Cobb has done a good job with the home game atmosphere! Good effort Furman - I look forward to playing you this year!

I disagree that this was a step back for the defense. UNC's offensive line is the best one we'll see. I don't think they even allowed a sack to Virginia Tech.

We gave up a lot of big plays on mismatches on the outside. #9 and #1 are very good recivers for the Tarheels and our cbs gave up 9 inches or so to each. After watching out d play against IAA competition, I think they will be just fine.

Offense was insane. That option was a guaranteed 5 yrds every time. Stepp might emerge as THE reciever in the SoCon.

Mr. C
September 17th, 2006, 12:03 AM
ACC lines normally have huge size advantages over SoCon teams and this matchup was the same. Furman's defense actually played well after they got down 14-0 in the first three minutes (that's really what hurt the Paladins). The play of the defense through the first three quarters allowed Furman to come back and take the lead twice. The Paladin D just ran out of gas. No lack of ability, or effort.
