I'm sure this thread has been done before, but what the hell, we're in the last few days before the start of the season. And I'm almost previewed out xlolx

What are the distances between your school and their league mates? Any trips you don't like taking? (not necessarily talking about the stadium, but the actual trip itself) Any favorite trips?

Southern
AAMU - 505 mi, 7 hours 15 mins
Alabama State - 371 mi, 5 hours 21 mins
Alcorn - 121 mi, 2 hours 9 mins
Arkansas Pine Bluff - 299 mi, 5 hours 37 mins
Grambling - 220 mi, 3 hours 40 mins (we don't play there)
Jackson State - 153 mi, 2 hours 44 mins
MVSU - 253 mi, 4 hours 22 mins
Prairie View - 321 mi, 4 hours 47 mins (don't ever play there)
Texas Southern - 278 mi, 4 hours 8 mins

My favorite trip is to Houston, growing up I enjoyed going to the big city xlolx Knowing you're going there every year (playing TSU and PVU) was a big bonus as a Jag fan.
My least favorite trip is to Itta Bena, I would have voted Alcorn but that's a shorter trip. The trip to Valley is just boring and it's not much to do there. Nothing about the area excites me.

Delaware to:
Albany - 276 mi, 4:15
JMU - 227 mi, 3:30
Maine - 585 mi, 8:59
UNH - 408 mi, 6:23
UR - 205 mi, 3:20
URI - 291 mi, 4:46
SBU - 195 mi, 3:21
Towson - 58.6 mi, 1:00
Nova - 43.8 mi, 0:48 to Campus; 28.1 mi, 0:32 to PPL Park
W&M - 248 mi, 3:57
Elon (Entering 2014) - 393 mi, 6:02

Maine, UNH, URI, and SBU all involve drives through NYC. JMU, UR, W&M, and Elon all involve drives through Baltimore and DC. Given that, I prefer the drives to the VA schools.

Being a transplant up in the northeast, my favorite W&M road trip is actually to U. Rhode Island. It's a 2 hour trip from outside NY and easy to get to, off I-95. You are also close to he ocean so after the game, you can easily run down to the shore for a lobster or clam dinner.

Villanova is another fairly easy trip though there is really no tailgating so the actual game environment is not great. There are some great restaurants and old Inns (highly recommend the William Penn Inn) nearby. There is always a solid following of Tribe fans there as it is relatively close to Williamsburg (4+ hours) and we have a large alumni contingent in Philly, nearby NJ and NY.

UMass was also a nice, easy trip in a beautiful area, good tailgating. They have moved on.

Outside the CAA, I have found all the Ivy and Patriot game locations we have played a great day in nice college environments. We may have one of these per year.

For those in Virginia, I think Elon will soon become a great road trip. Two to three hours depending on where you live. They have a nice stadium and one group just ranked their campus #1 most beautiful in the nation.

Lafayette to

Bucknell = 125 mi.
Colgate = 185 mi.
Fordham = 85 mi.
Georgetown = 200 mi.
Holy Cross = 250 mi.
Lehigh = 12 mi.

The worst trip is to Colgate in Hamilton, NY. You can't get there from here - and it doesn't matter where "here" is. Compounding this is the scheduling which places this game in November. In Hamilton there are only two seasons - summer and winter - and summer only lasts for about a week and a half.
Bucknell is a great trip into the country, but too many games have been played up there at night of late. I try to avoid away night games.
Fordham is in a NYC neighborhood with a lot of great Italian restaurants.
Georgetown is in DC and what's not to like about that.
Holy Cross is the longest in-league trek, but it's on the way to places we visit quite often. My car can find it without any conscious effort on my part.
Lehigh's stadium is a lot closer to my house than Lafayette's. I will wander over there every now and then for the first half of a day-night doubleheader when Lafayette is playing a home night game.

I think you're going to like your Patriot League visit this year. If the weather cooperates there should be a great crowd in one of the better FCS football venues in the east. Many complain about parking. (Actually, it's usually the Lehigh types that can grump and groan about anything - except their schedule which is [not] oh so challenging.) If you know what you're doing, it isn't bad at all. Just remember two things, (1) March Field, and (2) keep in touch with me, Pard4Life, Bogie and Frank's Tanks - we'll give you the right information.

CAA

Albany: 240mi. Can't wait to make this trip and check out the new stadium. Hopefully we get to play you guys up there next year, because it would make a good road trip.

Delaware: 44mi. Made this trip many times, absolutely love the atmosphere, the fans, the tailgating, and all the wins I've seen there.

JMU: 270mi. This was a real hike to get down for the '08 playoff game, but well worth it despite the result. Great fans welcomed us over to a few tailgates, and really packed the place. I'd love to go back and check out the expansion

Maine: 555mi. Longest trip in the CAA for us. Would only think about it early in the season.
UNH: 380mi
URI: 265mi
Richmond: 245mi.

Stony Brook: 165 mi. Nice little road trip for playoff game last year. Hoping we play up there next year, because as a college student with 2 roommates from LI it would be a real easy overnight trip.

Towson: 100 mi. Hoping to making the trek down this year, lines up perfectly with Nova's fall break

William and Mary: 289mi. Zable tops my CAA bucket list at the moment, when I get there is anyone's guess though.

Others:

I've made the trip into Penn and up to Lehigh, great experience both places. I would love to visit some of the other PL schools, especially HC and LC.

Cant say I have really liked any of the places weve gone but I have enjoyed myself. If that makes sense. Almost all schools have no place for the visitors to tailgate. If they do its pretty far removed for the general tailgate scene. Of course I also understand that most schools dont travel like the Bison do. I have not been to YSU or Indiana State so cant comment on them.

Exactly. I was running some numbers on my annual fall hunting / football trip up to Nodak in the fall and found that flying (two tickets, not just one) is cheaper than driving. Plus, sitting in the car for 17 hours each way driving is not fun...scenery between CO and ND is nothing special.

Does UND have the longest conference trips in all of the FCS?

Initially, I thought they did, being a geographic outlier in an already large conference geographically. Then 97Torero posted and reminded my the PFL has an even larger footprint and they are the outlier of their conference. The shortest conference road trip for USD appears to be Drake at 1,747 miles. Ouch! Going from the SWern-most corner of the US to the Midwest and East has to make them the most travel-weary team in FCS, I think.

Moving to Eastern Kansas has afforded me the ability to make many more MVFC road trips. WIU, ISUr, USD, SIU, and MoSt are the only schools within the footprint I haven't seen and will be easy to get to from here.

All the time I lived in Ohio, I missed YSU because of the stupid schedule quirk that put them in Fargo two years in a row.

Same thing happened with PSU and Big Sky expansion. We were due to play there again in 2012, when I happened to be living about 4 hours closer to them (Spokompton). Now that I'm back home it's a much longer trip.

The FBS games will come in handy especially when UND plays at Utah and Washington. I would also like to know what the travel budget is, their travel distance goes way down in hockey starting this year as Alaska-Anchorage is not in UND's new conference so maybe a little savings there goes into the Big Sky travel fund.

FBS games definitely help. However, I'm a huge fan of UND hockey, having grown up in Bis-Man until I was 17, and UND only traveled to UAA one weekend every other year. On top of that, UAA pays a lot of travel expenses of the visiting team, and the visiting team gets an exemption that allows them to host an extra weekend of home games which is a HUGE money maker with UND selling out the Ralph. With the larger geographical footprint of the NaCHo league, expect the travel budget of the Men's hockey team to grow in the future, not shrink.

You still have to drive hundreds of miles to find good scenery. Other than the badlands around T.R. Nat'l park, there isn't much to see from eastern N.D. until you get near Billings unless farm fields and freeway exits for "ranch access" are your cup of tea. ;)

Regarding UND's travel budget for football it has to be pretty high because they charter flights for every trip.

I do know that they sell extra seats in the plane to fans and alumni so i'd imagine that helps offset costs some, but who knows how much.

Tribe fan in the DC area = every game is a day trip except Maine, UNH, and I usually stay in Rhode Island when we play there. Most years, I only have to get a hotel for one game or miss that weekend. Google is pushing it to say it takes under 7 hours. Pretty sure it was closer to 8 both times. And I didn't feel like JSU were very good hosts. I was actually traveling with the team so I won't go further into it, but definitely some issues.

I traveled to Murray twice, TSU with indoor track, JSU twice, and Austin Peay twice. Grew up going to EIU events and have made numerous trips up there for baseball, football, and basketball..

The only one I really care to make is @ PSU. Great town, great stadium, within reasonable driving distance from western MT.

Portland was a somewhat disappointing place to me. What do you like about it? Seattle seems much better and I've never been there.

Lafayette road trips to the Ivy are closer than most of the Patriot:

Penn: 70
Princeton: 40

Lafayette to

Bucknell = 125 mi.
Colgate = 185 mi.
Fordham = 85 mi.
Georgetown = 200 mi.
Holy Cross = 250 mi.
Lehigh = 12 mi.

Damned global warming. Summer used to last a day and a half in Hamilton..... xeekx

There is more "civilization" in Siberia than that corner of NY State... and I'm not even referring to the educational quality of Colgate either...

Does UND have the longest conference trips in all of the FCS?

I can't imagine anyone else even comes close.

EDIT: I stand corrected. Didn't realize San Diego was such an outlier.

IMHO, Portland is more like a really big small town than a relatively small big city as far as major American cities go. The heart of Seattle's downtown is all concrete and steel while Portland has the park blocks and tree-filled plazas and even street trees along some blocks downtown. Portland also has a nice waterfront park and esplanade lining the Willamette River. Head a mile west of the stadium where PSU plays and you're in an forest with the coyotes. I've even seen coyotes walking 2 blocks from PGE park on warm summer mornings just before sunrise.

Does UND have the longest conference trips in all of the FCS? USD does. Not the Yotes, the OTHER USD, in California.

UND should have at least listened to Summit League presentation prior to jumping into the Big Sky. Who knows, perhaps the Grand Forks team would have been reunited with their other Dakota schools, and the MVFC to boot.

Would still like to see UND and NoCo back into an NCC 2.0.

It would have done no good, the eastern MVFC teams didn't want another Dakota team, if a YSU or an Illinois St were to have jumped UND may have had a shot of getting in. Hopefully we all can be reunited at the next level.

I have no idea what all the factors are regarding San Diego's membership in the Pioneer League are, but it seems to me they might be able to justify the additional cost of scholarships, and joining the Big Sky, if they could save the enormous travel costs they must incur from all sports.

San Diego to Marist: 2,800 miles if you were crazy enough to drive. This year, it's Marist's turn to make the trip.

Marist must have a lot of frequent-flyer miles saved up.

The Pioneer is football only, they are in the West Coast Conference for other sports. Even if they could join the Big Sky for football only, there would still be a lot of flying around, although the flights would be shorter. 63 scholarships at $40,900 (http://www.sandiego.edu/admissions/tuition_and_fees.php) each would cost $2,576,700 : That would pay for a lot of charter flights.

I think that UNC fits better in the Big Sky being in Mountain Time and all... oh, I get it now, the NCC 2.0 so we're talking more than football so they could be Denver's travel partner. Still think that UNC is happier in the Sky because nobody wanted conference stuff at their place. In fact, I don't think that UNC hosted any conference events until their final year when they got wrestling.

Anyway, San Diego might have the longest plane trips but the other USD has gone on some epic bus trips. Measured in time spend travelling, it might be a toss up between the two :)

Come to think about it, Sacramento State must be up there because their AD claimed that it would take his team 14 hours to get to Fargo (of course, their AD is an ex-UND dude and that might have added some hours onto his estimate.)

Yes...and Title IX would force them to spend millions more on women's sports.
