Two-sport athletes are not common in college, at any level, because of the specialization of sports today.
Sophomore nose tackle T.J. Beelen plans on continuing to tackle two sports at Division I SIU this year, and beyond. A thrower on the track and field team, Beelen did very well in his first season there. This past spring, he finished third in the Missouri Valley Conference in the discus and qualified for the USA Track and Field Junior Championships in Des Moines.
“I was good at it and I’m a competitor,” Beelen said.
