The Islanders pledged unprecedented faith in goaltender Rick DiPietro this week, signing him to a 15-year, $67.5 million contract, the longest in NHL history. It's the second-longest player contract in major North American team sports history. Who had the longest?

Magic Johnson signed a 25 year deal with the Lakers in the 1980s.

2nd Longest in NHL history was the NYI also giving Alexi Yashin a 10 yr deal in 2001, and now are saddled with that contract too rich to even trade him!

USFL is defunct so can't be considered major, ofcourse, if it was for "The Apprentice" it still might be alive

FWIW, Young went to the USFL out of college and started with Tampa Bay in the NFL.
