LEXINGTON, Va. - Senior cornerback Jamaal Walton (Va. Beach, Va.) was honored nationally this week by being named a I-AA Defensive Player of the Week by Don Hansen’s Football Gazette for his play against Norfolk State.
Walton returning to his hometown area of Virginia Beach (Tallwood High School) blocked two extra points and led VMI in tackles with 15 with two pass breakups against the Spartans.
Walton shared the weekly award with linebacker Jason Williams of Western Illinios and defensive end Mike Ng of UC-Irvine.
Walton became the first player defensive player honored for the award since linebacker Justin Huggard earned the honor during the 2004 season against Charleston Southern.
In two games, Walton currently is tied for the team lead in tackles with 24 stops and he also leads the team in interceptions with two.

With a team of youngsters, new coaches, and a new attitude, many appreciate Walton's leadership. Nice to see recognition beyond all the "biggies" here on the board.
