NDSU Month @ AGS - Fact A Day

Beginning today there will be one fact posted in this thread each day.

I always enjoyed getting the little facts in these threads and any future ones will be done as this one has been done. This was a "roots up" effort with these facts being compiled and conveyed to yours truly by several of our upstanding Bison faithful.

NDSU has a log cabin located on the third floor of the Old Main, which is the oldest administrative building on campus. The cabin resides in the original location of the Little Country Theater, which completely moved to another building in the 1960’s. It is called the Lincoln Log Cabin and comes complete with two bedrooms, a main living space, and a complete bust of Abraham Lincoln inscripted with this quote, "Let us have faith that right makes might." One of the oldest classroom buildings, Minard Hall has a 4th floor attic that hasn't been used since the 1960's but has an interesting history.

It was opened with the building in 1901 it was used as a ballroom in the 1920's. One morning a janitor found two people dead, apparently homicide. The ballroom was closed and turned into a zoology lab before being permanently closed due to structural issues in the 1960's. There has been an occasional student who has been able to get up there and feeling "not alone". (NoDak 4 Ever)

According to the TSN column entitled In the FCS Huddle, the Fargodome has reached volume levels of up to 130 decibels. This would place the Fargodome as one of the top 5 loudest venues in all of college football. (Vitojr130)

Of NDSU’s 10 National Titles in Division I and Division II, 6 of the titles have been back-to-back titles: 1968-1969, 1985-1986, and 2011-2012. The other four titles were achieved in years 1965,1983 1988 and 1990. NDSU would have had a four-peat in the years 1983-1986 but were the the runner up in 1984. NDSU is a very affordable university for the education that students receive. NDSU tuition and student fees average to be 11.6% less than other universities in the region. (IBleedYellow)

As of 2010, NDSU’s campuses and research land takes up 22,053 acres, or the equivalent of over 16,600 football fields. The main campus, where the football team practices and plays, only accounts for 258 acres. (Vitojr130)

The Carnegie Commission on Higher Education has ranked NDSU as a “Research University/Very High Research Activity” university. This means NDSU falls into the top 108 private and public research facilities in the US, and the only one of it’s kind in the state of North Dakota. (IBleedYellow)

For NDSU’s homecoming, a torch was lit at the capitol in Bismarck, ND and was run on foot, typically by the basketball team, 200 miles, to the NDSU campus. Description of the picture below: “At 9 am on October 26, North Dakota Governor, Norman Brunsdale lit the torch that was carried 198 miles across the state from Bismarck to Fargo for Homecoming 1956. The runner is Robert K. Brown (NDAC Class of 1959, Architecture). Robert was one of a number of NDAC Basketball players who ran in the Torch Run that year.”

NDSU’s dance cheer team has also been back-to-back champions at the national level of competition in the “pom” category in 2012-2013. (IBleedYellow)

Since NDSU's first year in the FCS in 2004, the Bison are undefeated at home against non-conference opponents at 28-0. (AmsterBison)

All of NDSU’s other sports (minus wrestling) compete in The Summit League for conference play. NDSU has been very successful since joining Division I. NDSU Women’s Track and Field has not lost in Outdoor competition since 2008. Winning the team titles in 2008-2012. The Men’s and Women’s team won 4 straight crowns as well in indoor track and field. With the women’s winning their 5th straight in 2012 and the men falling for the first time in 2012. (IBleedYellow)

NDSU (as well as the state of ND) is proud of it’s strong traditions of work ethic and of winning in sports (Which many opposing fans take as arrogance). One of the strongest parts that backs the entire athletic department at NDSU is the “NDSU Team Makers” booster club. Team Makers is responsible for the tuition, room, board and book costs of all 350 of NDSU’s student athletes. This bill is upwards of 2.5 Million dollars per year. (IBleedYellow)

In 2012 NDSU had the #1 defense in the FCS with an average of 234.47 yards allowed per game. Despite the fact that NDSU, along with SHSU, played more games than any team in the country at 15 they allowed fewer total yards on the season (3517) than 108 of the other 120 FCS teams. (Professor Chaos)

The composer of The Simpsons theme song, Alf Clausen, is an NDSU graduate. Other notable works by Alf is the score to Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, Airplane II: The Sequel, and ALF. (Vitojr130)

NDSU has fielded a 1000 yard rusher in each of the last 10 seasons including having two such rushers each of the last two seasons. During that time 7 different players have had a 1000 yard rushing season and 4 players have had multiple 1000 yard seasons for the Bison. (Professor Chaos)

In 1915, all freshmen had to wear a green cap (beanie), which were purchased from the Bookstore and had to be worn from 8 am - 6 pm everyday. Originally this was from the opening day until November 1st, but was changed to the end of the NDAC vs. UND football game. Beanies were still being worn into the early 1970s. (Bisonbacker)

NDSU looks to return one of the best teams in program history this year returning 19 of 22 starters on a team that has won back to back national titles. However, they have a lofty standard set by the 1986 Division 2 national championship team. That team finished the season 13-0 outscoring their opponents 537-87 for an average score of 41.3 to 6.7. The seniors on that team finished their collegiate careers with 3 national titles in 4 national title game appearances and a 47-5-1 record. (Professor Chaos)

Fargo is home to the second largest Microsoft campus in the world, second only to the HQ in Seattle. This is because of NDSU Alumnus Doug Burgum. Mr. Burgum was the owner and CEO of Great Plains Software. Great Plains Software was bought out by Microsoft because of its coveted accounting software now known as Microsoft Dynamics GP. This lead to the development of a large Microsoft campus in Fargo and the relationship between Mr. Burgum, Microsoft, and NDSU has lead to a partnership between the organizations. (Vitojr130)

2013 marks the first time in NDSU’s Division 1 history that they can boast 3 first team preseason All-America selections in senior OT Billy Turner, senior MLB Grant Olson, and senior CB Marcus Williams. (Professor Chaos)

At the end of the FCS National Championship Game on 1/5/2013 a game ball was presented to a very unlikely person, a 10 year old Bison fan from Fargo named Jordan Peterson. Jordan is battling Cystic Fibrosis and had befriended several Bison players prior to his family relocating to Houston to await a lung transplant for him. Last post season's matchup of NDSU and SDSU marked the 100th meeting between the two football teams. The first ever meeting in 1903, NDSU defeated SDSU 85-0, and the series record stands at 55-40-5 in favor of NDSU. (BisonFan02)

Former NDSU player and coach Casey “Gus” Bradley has experienced a meteoric rise in the coaching ranks over the last several years. After winning 3 D2 national titles as a player for the Bison from 1984-1988 he returned as an assistant coach in 1996. Until 2005 he was a linebacker coach and defensive coordinator at NDSU before joining the coaching staff of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2006 where he was also the linebacker coach. In 2009 he joined the Seattle Seahawks as their defensive coordinator and directed one of the NFL’s stingiest defenses prior to being hired as the head coach of the Jacksonville Jaguars on January 17th, 2013. In 1962 NDSU finished 0-10 including losses to fellow Fargo-Moorhead area colleges Minnesota State-Moorhead and Concordia College. That year Roy C. Pedersen, Carl Rorvig, and Ernie Wheeler started the NDSU Team Makers club as a way to raise funds for the ailing football program. With the injection of income under the guidance of coach Darrell Mudra the Bison football team improved to 3-5 in 1963, 10-1 in 1964, and a College Division national championship in 1965 finishing the year a perfect 11-0. Today, NDSU Team Makers raises well over two million dollars each year to fund athletic scholarships for all Bison student-athletes. (Professor Chaos)

Ceres Hall, which was built in 1910, was not the first name choice for the building In April of 1950, Mrs. Jessamine Slaughter Burgum wrote "When the question came up to build Ceres Hall, it was suggested to name it after the first girl student, who had enrolled from Bismarck. It was agreed, and one trustee asked, 'What was her name' 'Why, Jessie Slaughter, from Bismarck. “Oh, then the students will be calling it 'the Slaughter House instead of Slaughter Hall,” so they decided to call it Ceres Hall after the Goddess of Agriculture." Did you know that there was once a cafeteria in Ceres – where the current Registrar’s Office is. (Bisonbacker)

In 1925 NDSU (NDAC NDSC) won their first conference championship in football. This picture is of the 1925 team holding a commemorative championship ball.Their wins were against Jamestown College, Morningside, Des Moines University, University of North Dakota and St. Thomas. 1925 was the third season NDSU had belonged to a conference, when NDSU started football in 1894 very few games were played each season, sometimes as few as 2. NDSU football has since won 28 conference championships (for a total of 29) spanning 3 conferences, and 10 national championships. In 1925 the NCC (NDSU’s conference) consisted of Creighton University, Des Moines University, Morningside University, Nebraska Wesleyan University, University of North Dakota, St. Thomas University, University of South Dakota, South Dakota State University and North Dakota State University. University of Northern Iowa did not join the NCC until 1934.

Senior quarterback Brock Jensen is likely to become the most accomplished passer in NDSU history by the end of the 2013 season barring injury. He is currently #2 in NDSU history in passing yards (5805), completions (485), and attempts (796) and #3 all-time in total offense (6566). He needs only 1228 passing yards, 46 attempts, 50 completions, and 676 yards of total offense to become NDSU's all-time leader in each of those respective categories. He has also posted an impressive 32-5 career record as a starter.

In this 1920 picture (October 30th) a game is being played between the University of North Dakota and North Dakota State University at NDSU’s Dacotah Field (The original, NDSU built a new Dacotah Field later on).The community’s enthusiasm is obvious by seeing the numbers at the game. In this year Fargo, North Dakota was not even 1/5th the population it is today. The sign on the car in the lower right corner reads, “Show the world Fargo is right.” UND won this game 14-7.

North Dakota State University’s baseball team has played and practiced on campus at Newman Outdoor Field since 1997. The Bison share the facility with the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks of the independent American Association. Completed in June 1996 at an original cost of $5.5 million, the stadium’s permanent seating capacity is 4,419 fans. Naming rights were awarded to Harold Newman, founder of Newman Outdoor Advertising, for $1.5 million in 1998. Video tour link below.

Despite the fact that NDSU has only been a member of the Missouri Valley Football Conference since 2008 they already have more weeks ranked as the #1 team in the nation as a member of the MVFC than any other current team in the conference. Including the preseason poll this year NDSU has been the top ranked team in the Sports Network FCS Top 25 17 times as a member of the MVFC. Southern Illinois is second in the conference having achieved the top rank 16 times.

Tonight NDSU squares off against Kansas St in a nationally televised game on Fox Sports 1 beginning at 8:30PM ET. Since transitioning to the FCS NDSU is 6-3 against FBS teams and those wins haven't been of a flukish nature. On average in those 9 contests NDSU has outscored their FBS opponents 23-17, outgained them offensively 390-311, and held a 7+ minute time of possession advantage.
