View Full Version : Top WR group in the nation?

The last couple years EWU has been the team with the best group of WRs in the nation. With the loss of their three top targets from last season who is the new team with the top group of WRs?

SHSU may not have the absolute best but it certainly has some talent.
Torrance Williams will be healthy, he was critical for our run in 2011 but was injured most of last season. Richard Sincere is considered a wide receiver and has racked up tons of yards the last few years (2,800 AP yards and 24 TDs). Chance Nelson had a great 1st year at Sam snagging 9 TDs & 19.2 AVG, he still has 3 years of eligibility left.
Sam also picked up CU receiver Gerald Thomas this off-season. He played in all 12 CU games as a true freshman last year.

Richmond's WR Corps is easily one of the best in the country.
Ben Edwards led the CAA in receptions with 80 last year.
Stephen Barnette is our big play target with over 50 receptions and 800 yards lady year.
Shane Savage is a Cornell transfer and caught 65 balls for over 1000 yards in 2011.
Rashad Ponder and Reggie Digg ain't chopped liver either.

App has three guys that will be in NFL camps one day at a minimum.
Price, Peacock, Washington, Jones - I doubt another team has four WRs as good as these guys.

I would have a hard time believing any team other than App State. Arguably the best WR in the nation along with 2 other top 10 receivers and great depth behind them.

Tacoi Summler was a top 70 recruit, got a scholarship to Oregon, and was clocked at a sub 4.3 40 in HS. If he is lucky he will be our 5th receiver this year.

the 17 sacks are alittle misleading, most of the starting OL didn't play, or had very limited action, and the qbs were not allowed to be tackled, so, they played touch football with them, touch them they were down. Kinda funny watching the game, multiple times the qb on both squads would have a huge lane to run, in a game probably would have been a 10-15 yd gain, but, a defensive lineman would stick his hand out as the qb went by, barely touch him, and the play was stopped, recorded sack.

To be fair, Summler has experienced knee problems and I'm hearing they aren't over yet. Surgery in the off season didn't completely correct the problem and it looks as though he may have to go under the knife again. Still, I agree App has the best FCS WR group in the country and one of the best in all of college football.

This years game will likely be a lot like last year with both offenses running up and down the field. Just glad that bowling ball of a running back (Moore) won't be there this year, but your QB play will certainly be better to offset that.

App split its squad instead of going 1's vs 1's and a few on the OL 2 deep didn't play. Since going to the 3-4 App's defensive front 3 is deep and talented. They made mince meat of those o-line's made up of mostly freshmen, walk-on's and a guy who hasn't played football in 3 years.

I surely hope not, that's why we hired Woody. As long as we don't lose a handful of starters in the Spring, I believe he'll have things much improved. We're as strong and deep on the DL and DB as we've been in a while. Deuce Rob alone should make a big difference with the pass rush.

UND has a good group but I am not sure if they are the best "bunch" in the nation. They do have Hardin, and Jackson (top 10 in receptions last season in the BSC) back along with Kenny Golladay so its a good trio. BUT they don't have a stud QB like Braden Hanson throwing to them instead it will be redshirt freshman Joe Mollberg, or redshirt freshman Ryan Bartels so their numbers may be affected by that, but on the other hand we could see what these receivers can do with a different QB.
Greg Hardin 65 rec 1145 yds 14 TD
Jameer Jackson 55 rec 705 yds 6 TD
Kenny Golladay 30 rec 429 yds 1 TD
Good numbers last season, but I am not ready on saying UND has the best in the nation.

That would be insane. I do think though, that with App breaking in a starting RB, and the whole OL returning, and Jackson healthy, the passing game will really explode in 2013. I think Steven Miller was really under-rated, but with nearly 1400 yards, 5.7 ypc, he really balanced out the offense. I imagine Satterfield will take to the air a bit more.
And Price, clearly the best WR and naturally gifted, but Peacock and Washington were very good last year, the ECU game included. Ripping balls out of DBs hands, juking the crud out of them for yards after catch, they're very experienced and physical, and have great speed.

Yep... App really hurt GSU last year throwing underneath to your secondary receivers. Price outmanning the secondary was one thing, but you burned GSU in blitzes with crossing patterns when they dropped back into a zone. Having a safety valve and a back you could iso against DE's and LB's like Miller was a asset too.

Collectively, UND is at or near the top in FCS. They have it all . . . speed, skill, measureables. Great recruiting in this area the past few years. app by a mile. UND is top 5 though I think. NDSU also might finally have the depth and health to be considered a top unit. smith, gebhart and vraa are all very good (though not elite individually) when healthy, but 3 good receivers aren't enough to make a top-tier unit. Carey Woods has been reported to be doing well, and hopefully will turn out to be a 4th quality option.

Is that because the SoCon lacks great WRs? The Big Sky always has a ton of playmakers at WR. I'm not saying the SoCon isn't a good defensive league, but it is not a league with great passing attacks. I'd say the rankings are inflated thanks to playing against option teams and teams that don't pass much or can't pass.

Your point is spot on.
Last year the SoCon had GSU, Citadel, and Wofford all running the option. Furman and Chatty had young QB's, Samford was pretty balanced and WCU was.... well, WCU. App was by far the best passing team in the conference and will be again this year.
The best example of your point was the Wofford/GSU game. GSU won 17-9 despite having zero attempts & zero completions for zero yards in a battle of top 10 teams. The game took just over 2 hours to play. It was the only home game all year where I didn't empty my flask because it was over so fast.

San Diego St's head coach was blown away with how fast Greg Hardin was. We've got a nice mixed of breakaway speed and size. So Jameer Jackson weighs between 235-240 lbs. Add in a stronger Kenny Golladay who now runs a 4.4 at 6'4" and that's a nice top three with alot of good players behind them.
