This is my ballot

1: North Dakota State Bison
2: Sam Houston State Bearkats
3: Eastern Washington Eagles
4: South Dakota State Jackrabbits
5: Wofford Terriers
6: Central Arkansas Bears
7: Montana State Bobcats
8: Northern Iowa Panthers
9: Illinois State Redbirds
10: Cal Poly Mustangs
11: Towson Tigers
12: Villanova Wildcats
13: New Hampshire Wildcats
14: Chattanooga Mocs

20: Bethune-Cookman Wildcats
21: Northern Arizona Lumberjacks
22: Youngstown State Penguins
23: Eastern Illinois Panthers
24: Tennessee State Tigers
25: Wagner Seahawks

And I won't apologize for having 4 eligible SoCon teams in my top 25. I would put El Cid and Samford up against a lot of the teams you will be seeing in people's ballots near the bottom of the top 25.

BTW, I'll be curious to see if people that think GSU and App. should not be eligible for votes because they are at an unfair advantage (fair enough I guess even though both teams likely won't have a single player who wouldn't be on their teams if it were not for the lifted scholarship limit) will punish the eligible Socon teams for losing to App. State and GSU by knocking them down in the rankings or not considering them to be ranked at all.

Samford and The Cit were on most people's ballots and were definitely on mine.

I don't know if people will punish teams for losing to App or GSU any less than they would have previously or not but it's probably gonna depend on what happened on the rest of their ballot.

Leaving out the transition teams, I can see it. Very good team that fell short in Ga. last year. Big chip on their shoulder and the talent to stay top 5. Of course the SLC will rotate talent and someone else will move up the next few years.

I agree. I had UCA ranked very high in my poll as well.

I found it extremely difficult to rank teams outside of the Top 6/7. I really like NDSU, Cal Poly Villanova, Richmond, UCA, SHSU and Wofford, after that, not so much....

I like UCA, but I'm stunned they're at No. 5.

Why? They beat Sam last year in Conway (and Sam has to travel there again)

They have been in the playoffs back to back years

They won the SLC title with their only loss to SFA in a monsoon (a foot of rain fell on that saturday and myself and UCABear tailgated through it)

They have a great QB and did not lose much on their team.

I believe in SDSU this year and slotted them #2, and YSU to be a team that sits around the #10 spot. I don't think SHSU will be able to repeat a Championship appearance and that UCA will overtake them as the best team in the SLC.

Anyway, I'm not posting my full ballot but I will post my highest ranked teams in each conference, and the #2 if they came only one spot lower than the #1 in my top 25.

JSU might be the surprise of the OVC, they are a WAY underrated team.

National Rank and CAA rank don't always match with the unbalanced schedule.

For instance, Richmond & Nova don't play head to head, we play Towson at home (Nova plays them away), we play UD &SBU away (Nova has them at home), and they get UNH away while we are playing Albany at home.

Comparing with Towson, They get Nova & UNH at home while we are play Maine at home & URI away. Plus we get the head to head at home.

Only regular season count in Poll Perfection. You are not penalized for missing the Preseason vote. You are fine. Consider it an OOC game and you are still in line for the conference title. Don't drop one at that point though.

I thought they were fairly over reanked as well. They are a tie for the 6th CAA team in my poll and were well below that 13 spot on my ballot. Anything is possible but I think they'll fight it out pretty hard and be around 5th or 6th in the CAA but if they get a couple breaks it's all they need to be at/near the top as well.

Looks like the undeserved MSU hype train is already running this year. #3 are you kidding me?

i have no ballot to post, because I didn't know this was happening :(

my top 10 would have been
NDSU
GSU
EWU
NOVA
ODU
SDSU
POLY
SHSU
APP
TOWSON

ignore the three non-pollable teams, and UCA, UNH, and possibly MSU (SBU? RICHMOND? WOFFORD?) would enter the top 10.

Also: what am I missing about wofford that everyone else is seeing?

I agree.

Going into the season, I would put the CAA teams in the following tiers:

Top Tier: Towson

2nd Tier (just a shade below TU): Villanova, Richmond, UNH.

3rd Tier: JMU, UD, Stony Brook. WM is close to this group too.

4th Tier: Maine, Albany

10th tier: Rhody

As usual, the standings will end up far different than predicted in August. I see UD and WM as the teams most likely to exceed expectations. Towson is a team that I could see falling short of expectations.

I agree with you on the Wofford aspect. What I'm curious about is what is everyone obsessing so much about EWU? Yes, Adams is back, but he lost his top 3 wide receivers. It won't be so easy throwing the ball without Kaufman, Herd, and Edwards running routes. Also they lost about half of their defensive starters. They'll be good, but they'll need a lot of new people to step up to be a top 3 program.

I think SBU is better than 7th in the CAA, and I also think that the AGS poll failed to take into account the unexpected loss of whats-his-name.

This is a great point. I have a lot of trepidation about the season for this reason. Additionally, I think the combination of Padron & Adams was actually a good thing last year, as their dramatically different playing styles added more complexity to gameplanning for them. That being said, I hope that EWU is at the top this year, but could see them as low as six wins. Montana will rebound, and MSU and Cal Poly will be strong again. My gut tells me EWU will fall in behind those three, and still squeak into the playoffs this year.

Well here is the poll that I was going to submit, if I had not gotten distracted. I would like to make a suggestion that the preseason poll is open for a little bit longer than the regular season to give folks a chance considering all the summer activities. Yeah I am still pissed at myself I missed it.

A pre-season poll to me is just an estimation of potential. For me it it is a combo of many variables and a little gut feeling thrown in. Last year's performance, returning starters, coaching situation, schedule, anticipated performance, etc. I am not following conventional wisdom in regard to SHSU. I think C Ark will win their conf. I like SDSU as well but had to give the nod to NDSU for #1 to begin with for obvious reasons. I think N Iowa and S Ill will make noise as well and they are pretty high considering last years record. The MVFC is loaded for sure. I also have Montana back in the mix after last year debacle. I want to see how Cal Poly does before they get higher but I think they might be top 5 before all is over. Wofford is way too high on everyone's ballot and I still think they might be too high on mine, but they survive until they prove otherwise. I know the Lehigh folks will be upset not to see them but, oh well, take care of business and it will be rewarded. It was a tossup on whether to include Samford or The Citadel and in the end I included both. I think Chatty is a bit better than both and it will be a crap shoot in the SOCON this year. Also, I have no hesitation in not including teams from conferences that I think are subpar. If those teams do well in their OOC, I will give them votes. I will not give token votes just to be inclusive.

I'll play devil's advocate for Montana St. They did make the quarterfinals last year and they return a good portion of their significant contributors. By that I mean they return more of last year's core than most teams around the country. I have a hard time understanding how they're out of the top 5 but I find it pretty ironic you're advocating MSU as being overrated and playoff chokers but then have Villanova in your top 5 who lost to the same Stony Brook team in the opening round that Montana St beat in the second round.

I think the sentiment from Bisonville this whole year will be Montana St will be overrated because we're still pissed at their chicken **** AD.

MSU needs to rebuild their defensive line. That's easily their biggest concern imo. They also lack explosive skill players. McGhee can pretty much do everything but he still needs help. The Bobcats will once again be good but I don't see them as a legit championship threat. At least right now...

As for Villanova, two words, Andy Talley. They exceeded expectations last year and return a ton of talent. As much as it hurts me to say it, they'll be very good. I can't stand the Vile....

We deserve some trepidation, I can't argue with that. It depends on how you make your poll. Do you put it as how you think the season will end, or who are the best 25 teams in week one?

I tend to be the latter, and there is no way you can say MSU isn't a top 10 team in that viewpoint. Hell, if you take the other style. MSU

W MONMOUTH (GOLD RUSH)
L at SMU
W COLORADO MESA (HALL OF FAME)
W at Stephen F. Austin
W at North Dakota
W NORTHERN ARIZONA (HOMECOMING)
W at Weber State
W UC DAVIS (AGR. APPRECIATION/ PARENT & FAMILY WEEKEND)
W at Northern Colorado
L at Eastern Washington
W SOUTHERN UTAH (MILITARY APPRECIATION)
W/L MONTANA (SENIOR RECOGNITION)

It's not an easy schedule, but it's not brutal. SFA, UND, EWU and UM I think are our biggest challenges and I could see us losing all 4 of those. We could also beat EWU.

If our O-Line play is improved from last year there is no reason we can't finish 11-1. The worst I think I can see us finishing is 7-4, but I'm guessing 10-2 is where we will end up. Hell even a 9-3 MSU team with that schedule is going to finish the season in the top 5.

But sadly I agree with Lehigh Owl. I think we are once again built to run through the Big Sky, but we don't have any gamebreakers outside of McGhee. I'd like to see Sean Johnson emerge as a guy who gets 5-10 carries a game. He is a gamebreaker but it remains to be seen how he can handle the load, but he has been waiting his turn. He is probably the fastest guy on the team, and can break some ankles. A bit undersized but he could be the x-factor for us.

Defense has some questions to answer at DL and LB now that Na'a is gone for the season.

The suggestion of keeping the poll open longer is a fair one and in fact it was open for about 5 or 6 days last year I think but I wanted to try and start making the structure a little more like the actual poll runs during the season. I figured some would miss it but I am hoping that it serves as an alret that during the season things move pretty quickly with the poll opening late Saturday night and closing by noon Eastern on Mondays. Best practice for me is to put it together Sunday morning when I'm checking the site to see what has went on around the country. I realize that luxury wasn't afforded us this last Sunday so that is a big detraction and maybe it should be open longer for preseason.

What would anyone that cares think about maybe a Thursday @ nnon and open until Monday @ noon? I'd like to make it so it works best for all but some are gonna want it open for a week or two. xlolx

The league has gotten better as a whole but as the poll indicates no team is pushing toward the top of FCS. If the OVC team doesnt draw a top team they will play a push game so maybe its our year.

JMU wasn't good last year and they'll take a step back this year. Delaware is too low...just swap them on the poll and it looks pretty good, IMO.

Still a little butt hurt eh? Need a hug?

Can't argue any of your points. I'm concerned about the defensive side of the ball with graduations and recent injuries. The Cats are going to have to score more this year to win games, at least until the pups on defense grow up a bit.

Agreed. With Moeakiola out indefinitely and the recent news of Grosulak leaving, I'm very concerned. Prior to that I was only moderately concerned, as I thought our LBs would be pretty good.

If I like what I see early I probably will. I'll toss NDSU up there preseason just for respect on what they have done, not because I think they will win it again. I think man for man Chattanooga is slightly stronger.

Haha you just stirred up the hornets nest! There is no way you are better man for man than NDSU. Take that to the bank because I despise NDSU but at the same time respect their accomplishments.

Shocker. Chattown thinks Chattanooga is better than the 2 time champs with nearly the entire team returning.

damn...did people do any research into uni this year or not?

quando omni flunkus moritati

I had them at #3, but I probably would have ranked ODU. GSU, and ASu ahead of them if they were eligible. so #6 at worst.

Someone needs to take away your right to vote

3/5 compromise?

Exactly...not to mention they were 6-5 last year...
