Dawson Odums, Southern aim to make a statement
Around the Southern football facility, there are signs that the Aug. 30 season opener against Houston could be more than a big payday.
One such sign is posted on the door to coach Dawson Odums’ second-floor office.

i'm just going to say, if we can get Jackson State and Southern in Houston this year to lauch the Championship game there (just like launching in BHAM), Houston will fall in love with the SWAC. LOL

No matter their win-loss record the previous season, coaches and players from all regions, all divisions and all kinds of programs hit the practice fields in August convinced this will be their year.

Southern football team takes first step toward season
There soon will be all sorts of signs that football is back at Southern.
Coach Dawson Odums will be wearing the sweatshirt he sports every August to make sure he sweats as much as his players.

Southern notebook: Jaguars have strength in numbers
Most of the players who checked in Wednesday at Southern didn’t have much catching up to do.
First-year coach Dawson Odums said more than 70 of the 95 players who reported for fall camp were active members of Southern’s conditioning and weight program this summer. Odums said the number was in the 20s last year.

Southern football notebook: Conditioning test proves too challenging for 30 players
Before hitting the practice field Thursday afternoon for their first workout of fall camp, Southern’s football players reported in the morning to go through preseason conditioning tests.
Coach Dawson Odums said 65 of the 95 players in camp passed.

As the Southern football team filed onto the practice fields Thursday to begin its first workout of fall camp, redshirt freshman running back Lenard Tillery stood in the end zone holding a white helmet and wearing a camouflage bandana over his shaven head.

I know he was a great back at McKinley, avoiding injuries are key, but we could have good depth at RB.

Southern notebook: Jaguars switch to 3-4 to counter spread
When the Southern defense is on the field this season, the Jaguars will operate in a 3-4 alignment.
Coach Dawson Odums said the move is partly to accommodate the personnel he has on his roster, which includes 15 linebackers and 11 defensive linemen.

I can't really complain about the newspaper coverage we get in Baton Rouge, sharing the city with LSU. Now television is a different matter.

Willie Quinn was a star of Southern’s preseason camp last year, but eligibility issues cost him a chance to show everyone why.
It appears Quinn will finally get the chance.
The explosive receiver with the diminutive 5-foot-6, 175-pound frame has returned to the Southern practice fields, and coach Dawson Odums said the sophomore’s eligibility issues are behind him.

Dionte McDuffy transfers to Southern, reunites with Virgil Williams
On a day like so many in the friendship of Virgil Williams and Dionte McDuffy, the two were playing “Madden” at Virgil’s house last winter when McDuffy told his former Evangel teammate he was looking to transfer.
McDuffy had begun his college career at South Alabama. Williams had just finished his third season at Southern.

I can't really complain about the newspaper coverage we get in Baton Rouge, sharing the city with LSU. Now television is a different matter.
We get plenty of TV coverage from all three stations, NBC 33, Wafb, and wbrz. WBRZ surprisingly has given us more coverage recently. You can go to all of their websites and they have stories about SU.

Southern’s Houston blocks out time for his team
Within an hour of finishing the Southwestern Athletic Conference track and field meet last spring, Dwayne Houston said he began receiving text messages from his teammates on the Southern football team.
There was a common theme.
The teammates first wanted to congratulate Houston on being named the Most Outstanding Field Performer at the meet and for winning conference championships in the hammer throw and shot put.

Thanks 813Jag but we needed that luck last year with our kicking game hitting 8 out of 24 feild goals & loosing 3 games by 3 points. I think we have that problem solved now.
What are your chances against the "ICON" this year? Think they are any better than the 1-10 they posted last year?

I think they'll improve, but I'm not sure how much. I think they can win between 3 and 6 games depending on how the chips fall. Of course I think we will beat them xlolx but you toss out the records when we play.

anybody been to practice yet?Suppose to be going today. We tried to go yesterday but they were out at 9am-11am and we went up there at 3:30p. They had a 9a to 11a today and a 4 to 6 today.

I was gonna go yesterday but they went in the morning instead of the afternoon, I went this morning the running game looks better but still has a way to go. L. Doss watched from the sideline

Southern football team grinding it out
As they finished a two-hour workout Tuesday morning on the Southern practice field, the Jaguars removed their helmets and gathered to hear coach Dawson Odums speak.
The players wore full gear, sweat pouring from their foreheads.
A few hours later, they would return to the same place and do it all over again.
“It’s grind time,” Odums told the team after Tuesday’s practice. “Got to grind.”

Southern cooks up depth at receiver with Chuck Baker aboard
If Thursday morning’s practice was any indication, the Southern football team’s defense looks to be a step ahead of its offensive counterparts.
When practice concluded with the sides squaring off in red zone, goal line and overtime situations, the defense consistently came out ahead. Co-offensive coordinator Chadwick Germany said his players have a lot of catching up to do.

Southern doubles its Friday night fun with game at Texas Southern
It’s the largest market in the Southwestern Athletic Conference. It’s an easy drive from Baton Rouge, about four hours down Interstate 10.
For many Southern fans, their semiannual road trip to Houston is the highlight of football season.
But this year, if those fans want to attend either of the Jaguars’ games in Houston, they’ll have to plan a little more carefully.

Southern football team to scrimmage Saturday
The Southern football team will conduct the first of two full-squad scrimmages on Saturday with an eye on improving execution and communication.
The scrimmage, which is set to start at 9 a.m., will consist of the first-team offense against the first-team defense, as well as the second-team units squaring off with some third-unit players seeing action.

Scrimmage could help separate Southern running backs
Two weeks into the fall practice schedule and three weeks away from the season opener, the Southern Jaguars have their share of questions going into Saturday’s first scrimmage of preseason practice.
One of the biggest is how their stable of tailbacks will shake out come Aug. 30.
Projected starter Lenard Tillery is sidelined with a minor ankle injury.

Defense shines in Southern scrimmage
The opening play of Saturday’s scrimmage was a telling sign of what was to come in the first of two intrasquad scrimmages for the Southern football team this preseason.
Quarterback Wynton Perro and tailback Darius Coleman muffed the exchange on the opening drive resulting in a turnover, one of five on the day for the Southern offense.

Southern seniors Joseph, Doss step up to take leadership roles
With only 16 days remaining before Southern heads west to take on the Houston Cougars in Reliant Stadium, distractions and mental fatigue in the South Louisiana heat continue to be the theme this early week.
Motivation, determination and a player’s will come into question at times like this for a football team.

Jaguars defensive line excels during preseason camp
If preseason camp is any indication, the Jaguars defense appears to be the strength of the team, with the line being the anchor on that side of the ball.
It should come as no surprise that the defense has excelled during preseason practice in coach Dawson Odums’ second year at the helm.

Southern’s Wynton Perro, Deonte Shorts vying for backup QB job
There’s little doubt who will be under center to take the first snap of the season for Southern University when it takes on Houston in the opener Aug. 30.
That honor will go to senior quarterback Dray Joseph.
However, with just 14 days until kickoff the right to be Joseph’s backup is still open for competition.

Southern football: Final scrimmage set for Saturday
With school set to start Monday and preseason camp winding down, the Southern football team practiced one last time Friday before Saturday’s final preseason scrimmage.
The Jaguars went through a walkthrough Friday morning — better known around The Bluff as “Recovery Day” — ensuring the players are mentally prepared to make final impressions Saturday before their Aug. 30 tussle with Houston at Reliant Stadium.

Jaguars’ Williams happy to be back on field after scare
No player wants to be on the sideline. And certainly not on the brink of a senior season. And definitely not with the frightening thought of not knowing that the season could somehow be off the table.
Yet that’s where Southern senior cornerback Virgil Williams found himself little more than a week ago.

Southern offense stepping up
The Southern football team convened on the practice fields Saturday morning to conduct its final intrasquad scrimmage — and to hopefully put a stamp on what has been a long, grueling and hot preseason camp.
In the time between last week’s scrimmage and Saturday, the offense displayed signs of significant progress in moving the ball effectively against the first-team defense.

SU football fans see brighter prospects for 2013 Jaguars
Southern’s football team may have won only four games last season, but on Saturday, its fans dispelled any lingering sour memories to celebrate brighter prospects this season during a dancing-filled Fall Fan Fest at the F.G. Clark Activity Center.
Hundreds of fans poured into the university’s basketball and volleyball arena, and once the marching band started banging cymbals and blowing horns, the dancing didn’t stop for about 30 minutes.

Southern’s Dawson Odums is seeking that killer instinct
Maybe it’s fitting that the Southern football team will open its 2013 season on a Friday. Too bad it’s not Friday the 13th.
To relate a camplong message, coach Dawson Odums reached into the wayback machine and pulled out the villain from a famous 1980s horror franchise.
“He told us he needed a bunch of Jasons on defense and to be relentless,” Southern defensive back Virgil Williams said, referring to Jason Voorhees from the “Friday the 13th” movies. “That’s our goal in this camp and going into the season.”

Southern’s Dray Joseph is crafting his own path
When he represented the Southern football team at Southwestern Athletic Conference media day last month, quarterback Dray Joseph may have been asked as many questions about his attire — a bright silver suit with a bow tie and pocket square — as he was his leadership skills or physical tools.
When he and his teammates moved into their dorm rooms at the start of fall camp, Joseph carried not an Xbox or PlayStation but “The Autobiography of Malcolm X.”
The senior’s haircut began as a mohawk but has grown into something harder to define.

Aaron Hall takes long road back for Southern
As he looked down and panned his hand over a scarred right knee, Southern center Aaron Hall reminiscently pointed out the injury that ended his season in late October and then for all of spring practice, pushing him in front of one of the biggest obstacles he would have to face.
“See all these cuts? I was cut in about six places,” Hall said of the scars left from the surgery that came as the result of a rare and traumatic injury for any athlete: tears in all three stabilizing knee ligaments, the medial collateral ligament, the posterior collateral ligament and the anterior cruciate ligament.
