He was listed on the team's two-deep as the squad's backup long snapper, but did not see varsity action as a freshman in 2011.

At Red Bank Catholic HS
Chayes was a three-sport standout at Red Bank Catholic HS, playing football, ice hockey and baseball. He was part of division champions in each sport every year he played for a total of eight crowns. Chayes' football team won a conference title in 2009 and his hockey squad was league champions in 2010. Chayes served as captain of both the football and hockey team.
