-6:30 Central Kickoff
You can listen to the ILS feed at www.wjbc.com
I hear that UCA's starting QB has a broken hand and will not play and a t ransfer from SFA will start...For ILS, WR Laurent Robinson is questionable with an ankle bruise...
I think ILS will roll...

Obviously you haven't heard anything about our defense and that is how you made that conclusion. Excellent.
UCA is balanced on defense. Only problem will be the special teams. Offense should be hurt by Nathans unavailability but most UCA fans had counted this game as a close loss. But not knowing anything about Ill. State I guess my prediciton of
ILL STATE 28
UCA 14
would be as accurate as yours...xlolx

Mr. Bear,
Correct me if I am wrong but wasent it Ill St. that was taking Kansas St. to the house and lost in the last seconds? They seem to be a pretty stout team, not to take anything away from the '05 playoff DII bears.

a t ransfer from SFA will start...
Understand that the SFA transfer (Robbie Park) took two years off from football to go on a mission. His first snaps as a collegiate player were last week in mop-up duty. There is likely a large drop off from Brown, who led all of D2 last year in pass efficiency at points during the season, and Park.
I'd say that losing N. Brown is a much bigger blow than that of losing Laurent.

Having never seen the Redbirds play, but knowing what little I do about them I don't really know what to think of this game. I know that most everyone expects it to be a blowout, but I just can't see that happening. I mean the teams know pretty much nothing about one another other than the video that they have seen, and you can get a lot of different glimpses at a team from a video so you really have no clue as what to expect. I predict that UCA will put up a fight, but whether or not they can pull off the upset remains to be seen, at this stage in the game I don't think they have it just yet (especially with our leader not playing this week).
Final Score:
ISU 34

I'm sorry UCA fans, but the Redbirds are not going to be Bear friendly tomorrow. Illinois State will win a blow out.
I predict:
Redbirds: 35
Bears: 10
And that is being conservative. I could easily see Illinois State scoring around 50. And don't take that as disrespect UCA, the Redbirds are just that good. Us UNI fans are pretty nervous about our date in the dome this November.

I based this prediction on how strong we are, we are very strong offensively, defensively and just lost to K-St by 1 on the road. We are ranked #7 in the I-AA Nation and its our first home game...thats why I picked a big win, nothing against UCA my friend!

PLEASE tell me I didn't read we are still a D2 program...PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE
I do not think we can claim and absolutely want to be D1 in all aspects, and then when we play the big boys tell them we are still a D2 football program. First off it looks terrible, and 2nd off we are D1. We are an independant, I don't care what the stats will show, we wanted to move up, so we are. I don't remember anyone calling us DII last week while we were crap kicking Henderson all over the stadium, so when we play the big boys we can't claim we are still DII. Let's not take that step backwards please!
As for tonight, if we stay in it early, we will keep it close throughout. If Park can adjust and get some rust off with a little easier package and not lose the game for us early, I can see us sticking in there till the end. But if ISU gets rolling, it could turn into a long night. They are great and deserving of their ranking that is for sure.

Illinois State big in this one. Glad to have UCA in I-AA and glad to have so many fans on the board, but do some research. Some of these posts are rediculous. Illinois State is one of the top teams and you guys are transitional. Not that you can't win, but don't be suprised to see people pick against you in every game. Just be happy if you prove them wrong. :twocents:

I think this is the nail on the head comment. As a general rule, especially last year, UCA was picked or favored in, I am guessing, every game except for maybe Valdosta or UNA. And as talented as we are in the starting postions, it is our depth, especially against these great 1-AA programs that we will play catch up with for the next few years.
I just think it will take time for some of our fans to realize we are not the top BEAR ;) anymore and realize it is time for us to step up our game, which the heads of our programs know, realize, and are doing their part. But like you said in the last statement, it makes it all the more sweeter when we do pull off the big win!
I hope that makes sense.

Next week baby. (no i'm not looking past the game today :) )
MoState is at our place for our first I-AA vs. I-AA game. The crowd should be great. Our team will have to recover from this week, and hopefully our starting QB will be back.
For the ISU game, I'll admit I'm worried what a blowout could do to the rest of our season.

The reply that we are still a d-II team was looking at the composition of the team not at the "label" of the team. I think it will take a couple of years before we have a full I-AA squad, so our first year is still the core group of D-II players we have plus a few I-A and I-AA transfers. But I still am a proud Bear fan..even in defeats! :hurray:
Enjoy your weekend Redbirds  ..next time it won't be as easy.:nonono2: xlolx
If you have a good offense as you say I would say your defense is phenomenal according to the many things I have read about them so it should be a great game for you guys!

To say UCA is a D-II team is a complete copout. This year's recruiting class, which was 30 some-odd players, was recruited as a I-AA squad. The Bears went after better talent and made the pitch that, hey, we're D-I and you'll have a chance to play so and so before you get out of here.
All the other transfers that came in (Logan and Winson from Arkansas, McMurrian from Tulsa, Whitely from Memphis, Mack from Oklahoma State) came here knowing it's a I-AA program, not D-II.
And, many of the players that came last year came under the pretense of being D-I before they were gone, also, since in February of '05 it was pretty much a foregone conclusion that this move was coming. Plus, even if it was just a possibility, the coaches are going to use that as a recruiting pitch.
This isn't yet a full, solidified I-AA team but it's been in the molding process for two years' worth of players. And really what's the difference between a good D-II and a lot of I-AAs? If anything you may have some better front-line talent at D-II because of its lax eligibility rules. Look no further than UCA's own Willie Hopson and Josh Cade. What I-AAs have are more quality depth and typically better coaching staffs and facilities and things of the like that help you produce better players. Look at what UCA has compared to what they have at UAM, Henderson, etc.
If you could go out with 11 offensive guys, 11 defensive guys, and your specialists, I don't think there's really a ton of difference between a lot of your really good D-IIs and a lot of the I-AAs. I guarantee you there are guys at UCA that would step in and start immediately at Illinois State, and I figure Illinois State probably has a couple guys that would be buried on the depth chart at UCA.
So in my mind using the D-II excuse just isn't going to cut it. UCA was maybe the most talented D-II in the nation last year, and barely lost (and still would've won if the kicker didn't suck tremendously) to a solid I-AA at their house, with Willie Hopson out the entire game after the opening kick return, and the wrong QB playing the majority of the game. If UCA had played UT-Martin again at season's end, I don't think you'd find many folks who would pick the Skyhawks.
Anyway, all that being said, Robbie Park isn't Nathan Brown and Illinois State ain't Henderson State. UCA's defense is too good to give up 50, although I am concerned that ISU's ability to stuff UCA's running attack will of course force more reliance upon the passing game which means more reliance on Park, which might not be an ideal situation and might make it tough to keep long, sustained drives and the defense off the field.
And that's where the depth issue comes in. If the UCA defense is on the field for long periods and has to rely on the reserves an extended amount, that's when the Redbirds can start to exploit the newborn I-AA program.
But I think there's no way you keep Fairooz out of the end zone completely ... if for no other reason than if we throw it his way 30 times he's got to get there once. And the defense or special teams will surely come up with a big play that will give the offense a short field which could result in another score.
So, I think I will go ....
ISU - 31
UCA - 14
And hope I'm wrong. It doesn't seem right picking UCA to lose by 17 but Illinois State has proven they're the real deal, and the Bears have an unknown quantity at QB. Plus it's the home opener which can make the environment right for a whoopin'. However, if Laurent is out and maybe with it being the second game of the year and everybody still relatively fresh, UCA can rely longer on its starters to try to keep the game competitive.
BEAR
September 9th, 2006, 03:41 PM
There's nothing I like more than an indepth analysis. Great info. I guess UCA is between two worlds. Non D-II and a year or two from a complete I-AA roster. I guess when we play the number 7 or whatever team in the nation at their house it really doesn't matter.:asswhip:
Nevertheless, you're right. no excuses.
Go Bears! Beat the Redbirds!

IF UCA cant move the ball on O, it will tire out the D and ILS may start to open things up in the 2nd half...
ILS has been very conservative in their playcalling...
UCA is 1 BIG PLAY away from having all the momentum!!!

Great Defense Ill. State!
Offense draws crowds, defense wins championships! I heard you guys are one of the favs for nat. champ. this year. True?
From everything I had read preseason, I'd say true true and true.
This has been a great game so far, listening to it. This game does not sound like a very sloppily played game. ISU is plaiyng without Unanimous All American WR and we are without our normal starting QB. So both teams are fighting through two very very good D's. If I have my stats straight, neither teams Defenses have given up a single TD yet this season.

I never thought I would hear a UCA game that has been a "D" vs "D" game! UCA isn't known for great defense, good defense yes, but much better offense. Our defense will tire if they don't get some time off the field. : smh :
