I love the way it says former.
They were dismissed after the alleged drug buy, shooting and Police charges.
HARRISONBURG, Va,---A published report claims two former James Madison University football players were linked to the shooting at the Overlook at Stone Spring on Saturday.
James Madison University dismissed football players Corey Davis and Xavier Crocker from the team on Tuesday.
In a statement, the university only said the two players violated team rules.
One of the team rules states:
"Any student athlete arrested... or served with a warrant for any type of felony crime or major misdemeanor will be immediately and automatically suspended... Coaches may impose more severe penalties."
The dismissal comes just a few days after a shooting at the 600 block of John Tyler Circle

Every school has had players who crossed the criminal line at some point. It happens.
Some schools have multiple players who cross the line on an annual basis--underage drinking here, simple assault there...maybe a DUI or theft.
At least JMU's players don't mess around with mere misdemeanors and go full out felony. There's that.

the list doesn't go on. Good job in picking up on 4 incidents since 2007.
First, 2 of those articles reference the same incident. One of the articles references Nick Emmons and Chris Ferguson. Those charges were bunk. Emmons is now an officer in the Army, and the charges were thrown out.
And shoot, if we're going back to 2007, I can keep digging up stuff on ODU as well.

JMU2004, I listed only Football...and why, because of the fact JMU has many more criminal headlines with sports that I didn't list. Glasshouses can be shattered. I responded to your post because you attacked, not only ODU but Richmond. Nowhere was I being disparaging of JMU's past criminal activities in my original post I happened to mention that the article played down the fact the players charged were FORMER players, not factual. They are NOW former players because they were dismissed. I would never try and say that any school is without problems..........you started slinging the mud at ODU. We are not a convent, but I surly did not drag up other schools arrest records to try and slap it in any other Schools face or belittle any other Institution. Your attempt to make yourself feel good about JMU, because you may only have 30 students over the last 10 years arrested compared to some other schools arrest record of 5 is ridiculous.
JMU can be proud of many things, don't make others dismiss You and JMU, because you perceive you are superior because of some misguided attempt to belittle others.
ODU is not perfect, Richmond is not perfect, and many other Schools. I wish the best for JMU, as I do for Richmond and every other University that strives to achieve greatness with their Student athletes.
All of us hope our Students will bring honor achieve greatness while they represent each of our Schools with pride.
Good luck to all, as we enter into a new year filled with anticipation, excitement and even hope for a successful year in sports..

Question-Why is Mickey still the coach at JMU? The Dukes over the past 10 years have had more talent than anyone. If you like a huge EGO and a loud mouth,Mickey is the guy. If you cannot control your players,if you you cannot coach your team,if you have a ton of excuses on why you're losing games..........find a coach that can bring a title to that 62 million dollar stadium with integrity.xtwocentsx JMU has to be one of the top 3 places to coach in the FCS.xconfusedx

I agree Tribal......... My first reaction is disappointment, shame and I am always totally dismayed and confused as to why? Then I remember they are 18-22 year olds. We all make mistakes. But, just as you said Tribal, it comes down to personal accountability and not making excuses. But the bottom line is every school hires head coaches to mentor, guide, lead, train and see to it that every student athlete receives the best education they can provide.
As parents we entrust our young men and women to the coaches. To be a surrogate parent while these athletes are at that School. However that also means, the coach has to make the difficult and sometimes harsh decision for a students best interest that will hold them accountable and be forced to face the consequences for their actions.
I think the University has many responsibilities with student athletes. My prayer as a parent is that I can help guide my son or daughter into making a very informed choice. My responsibility as a parent is to search for the greatest potential so all those goals can be achieved. I am looking for a man or women with exceptional character to coach and lead by example. Yes, I know this is a tall task, and guarantees nothing, but I would rather start with the highest goals and not settle for anything less. This will be a new beginning... an adventure, a time for maturing and life lessons. What I do not want to happen is for my child to not have an understanding of the rules and the responsibilities that will be expected of them.
In a perfect world.
Just a note.....I am beyond the child stage, starting on the Grand Kids LOL

That championship bought him tons of street cred. However, I believe many see that he has not really capitalized on it. I feel like my friends who are Redskins fans over the past 10 years "this is the year" (of course, now they can actually say that). We have talent everywhere but MM never seems to figure out how to put it together and just expects the kids to win on athletic superiority alone. This game is BIG X's and O's, practice, and real time decision making. We may practice, but I'm not sure we have the other 2.
3rd and 9? RB dive right. Now, after this year without a deep playoff run and all the off-field issues, its time to Punt on Mickey....

I wouldn't call it serious. The U, THE Ohio State, and many other schools have had MAJOR issues, NCAA infractions and true thugs within their programs. Do we have a problem? Yes, and the coach is to blame. Not necessarily for bringing them to JMU to play football, but because he has not been able to keep them in line and model citizens for the school to be proud of.

Yeah lots of schools have at least a few athletes a year who have a run in with the law. But most of the time it is something fairly minor like a minor in possession or possibly a fight. Those types of infractions are going to happen, they are kids who are experiencing freedom for the first time in their lives away from home and at times they let their popularity as an athlete go to their head and think they can do no wrong. And for the most part the athletes are outnumbered in their violations by the other students at the school on a percentage scale. The problem isn't so much the small infractions, most schools probably expect a small amount of that to happen and for some to get caught. But the big crimes and infractions are the real problems. Don't blame the coaches for the kids either, they give a kid a chance to make it in life with a golden ring and some kids just blow it. If you really want to blame someone, blame the parents or whoever raised the kid for not teaching them the right way. The only way you should blame the school is if they bring in a known bad student or the coaches outright enforce bad behavior.

JMU players didn't do the shooting. They bought weed, and the dealer decided he wanted more money, and then decided to open up on the car as they were driving away. So, I ask again, is buying weed a felony?
No one at JMU is proud of fights, weed use, or the rape case. I agree the MM lacks accountability, and his head is firmly on the chopping block. However, in this case, JMU handled the situation EXACTLY as it should have been handled.

Glass houses are the point Old Timer. I didn't attack anyone...I simply pointed out that those slinging mud also had dirt on their shoes. The article was written by a TV station, not JMU. So take your issue on the "former" description up with them.
We haven't had 30 players arrested over the last 10 years.
Finally, stop lecturing me. Nowhere in my post did I say anything about perceiving JMU to be superior to other schools. Again, I merely pointed out the hypocritical nature of the original posters. W&M is probably the only school that hasn't had documented run-ins with the law, and for that, I applaud them.

I agree, some good eggs just go bad and there is nothing anyone can do about it. Kids are also subject to their environment (home life, neighborhood, grade school eduction, etc.) and that plays a major part in how they act (but obviously cannot be pigeon holed either). My point is what many are making, you DEFINITELY can blame the coaches in this circumstance. How many Coach K kids get caught up with law enforcement? When recruiting, you have to see that the kid can SUCCEED at your school on the field, academically, and in general. The thing is many coaches ignore points 2 and/ or 3 there and only look at their athletic ability to bring in W's and more money. One can certainly think MM has done this from time to time and should be responsible for his kids being involved in so many incidents.
Recruit kids that are coachable, smart academically AND can flat out ball. That is the sign of a good program and not one making the headlines for all the wrong reasons.

Good posts, all.
Listen, I get no joy when a young person does something that is so damaging they regret it for life. It's unfortunate.
I hope the young lady recovers and the others involved find the strength & ability to move on. Pay the price and do better.
I don't care for MM but he's not their weekend babysitter. A 20 yo knows better and shouldn't require 24/7 supervision, especially from that nut. He needs to look deeper than talent when he offers a kid a shot but he isn't to blame for this incident.
