Phillies slugger Ryan Howard is a top candidate for NL MVP, one year after winning the league's Rookie of the Year award. Who is the only player to be his league's top rookie and then its MVP the next season?

Fred Lynn was both at once. So was Ichiro.
I would guess somebody like Jackie Robinson, maybe Johnny Bench. Take away Barry's "performance enhancers," and it might have been Pujols.

My first guess was gonna be Ichiro but then I realized that was his rookie year

Cal Ripken, Jr. I'm pretty sure I'm right.

In 1982 Cal Ripken Jr. was the AL Rookie of the Year. The following season he was named league MVP.

I would have guessed Cal, only I got mixed up over the 1983 World Series, in which Oriole Rick Dempsey won MVP while Ripken batted .167 with 1 RBI in 5 games.
