Major League Baseball will seek to suspend about 20 players connected to the Miami-area clinic at the heart of an ongoing performance-enhancing drug scandal, including Alex Rodriguez and Ryan Braun, possibly within the next few weeks, "Outside the Lines" has learned. If the suspensions are upheld, the performance-enhancing drug scandal would be the largest in American sports history.

Tony Bosch, founder of the now-shuttered Biogenesis of America, reached an agreement this week to cooperate with MLB's investigation, two sources told "Outside the Lines," giving MLB the ammunition officials believe they need to suspend the players.

One source familiar with the case said the commissioner's office might seek 100-game suspensions for Rodriguez, Braun and other players, the penalty for a second doping offense. The argument, the source said, is the players' connection to Bosch constitutes one offense, and previous statements to MLB officials denying any such connection or the use of PEDs constitute another.

Bosch and his attorneys did not return several calls. MLB officials refused to comment when reached Tuesday.

Bosch is expected to begin meeting with officials -- and naming names -- within a week. The announcement of suspensions could follow within two weeks.

Investigators have had records naming about 20 players for more than a month. But without a sworn statement from Bosch that the records are accurate and reflect illicit interactions between the players and the self-described biochemist, the documents are little more than a road map.

Sources did not say what other materials, such as receipts and phone records, Bosch might provide, but said he has pledged to provide anything in his possession that could help MLB build cases against the players. Sources said MLB officials were not sure how many players might end up being pulled into the scandal; the 20 or so they know of have been identified through paperwork, but Bosch is expected to provide more. (Because some players are listed by their names and some by code names, officials are not yet certain whether some are redundant.)...

I can't wait to see the smug look on Ryan Braun's face wiped off when they present the proof he can't talk his way out of.

Shame baseball can't seem to shake this, or that no other professional sports get dragged into the conversation.

Just glad to see no Braves names pop up on the list. Maybe the Brewers have an opt out clause and can let Braun and his salary walk.

Why? If MLB nails him he serves 100 games. Then he can come back and continue to do what he does for the Brewers and be cheered by all the fans in Milwaukee. He makes that franchise better no matter how this goes.

The Yankees and A-Rod is a different situation, however.

The Brewers are 15.5 games out of first. Braun's salary is expected to escalate to 16 million in two years. I am just not a fan of albatross contracts on bad teams (a la Carlos Lee and Alfonso Soriano). I'd be looking for every opportunity to spend my good money elsewhere. That's me, though.

Yup. Robin Yount isn't walking through that door. xlolx

No arguements on those points. But when you dump you best players, it will piss off the fans. The Brewers do not need to be the midwest Marlins.

Also, being 15.5 games back in that division is like being only 5 out in the others. St. Louis/Cincinnati/ and even the Pirates are all on fire.

Well, the Pirates were on fire until they visited Turner Field this week. :)

I guess I just don't see the point in having a 40 homer guy on a last place team. Sure, he's the only reason to show up at the park, but the Brewers' window has closed. He may be really popular there, but I know if he were on the Braves I would want his butt on someone elses team. I'd rather have clean 20 homer guys than dirty 40 homer guys.

I'd want nothing to do with Braun if I were a Brewers fan. His salary could be used to bring in 3-4 good players, maybe even a few that know how to use their glove and keep PEDs out of their system. Plus, if he gets a 100-game ban, he's one more slip-up away from a lifetime ban.

He should have kept his mouth shut when he got off the first time. MLB was out for blood as soon as he starting making smug comments about how "justice prevailed", his "false accusations" and whatever other nonsense came out of his mouth.

Also looks like A-Rod's career is over one way or another. If this is how he goes out, I'd say he has next to no shot at the HOF.

As we've seen already, it's going to be hard to get into the HOF if you have that stink on you no matter what.

Out of that late 90s-early 2000s crowd, there really are not that many great players who avoided scrutiny that were position players. Ken Griffey and Chipper Jones come to mind, but the list is fairly small.

Jim Thome as well. #5 on the clean career HR list and a classy guy on and off the field.
