View Full Version : Cap'n Cat's Yearly Plug For D-II, D-III, NAIA, Etc...

Cap'n Cat

Cap'n Cat urges all AGSrs and guests to try and find the time to attend a game and support the program of a smaller division school near you.

Cap'n Cat can recount several exciting D-III games in his and his kids' travels: A passing free-for-all a couple years ago between Adrian and Albion Colleges in Michigan; a gritty, gutsy upset of Wabash College by Kalamazoo College in 2004, shootouts between St. Olaf and Gustavus Adolphus in Minnesota, and Coe/Cornell battles in Iowa, etc, etc. It's all great football and there are several advantages for fans.

First, these games aren't nearly as crowded as most larger schools, thus are superb places to bring the family. The kids can run around unfettered, join little pick up football games just outside the end zones, etc., and not get lost. Most times, you can watch them from the stands! Second, game tickets and concessions are always less expensive, making it a great entertainment value, too. Third, the football is as good as any other division - they hit with the same intensity, they all wear pads, they all pass and run and block the same as Michigan, UNI, Notre Dame, Montana, Florida State and McNeese State.

Cap'n Cat has always found the best time to attend a lower division game in your area is when your team is on a faraway roader and you just can't make the drive. When I can't make it to a UNI game, I check the 'Net or the papers for games a couple hours around me where there a dozens and dozens of D-II and D-III colleges: St. Olaf, Carleton, UW-LaCrosse, UW-River Falls, Minnesota State, St. Cloud State, Winona State, Hamline, Bethel, Minnesota-Morris, Augsburg, St. Thomas, UW-Stout, Gustavus Adolphus, UW-Eau Claire, Southwest (MN) State, Bemidji State, UM-Duluth, St. John's, and many, many more.

I've tailgated at many of these schools and have never had a problem. Note that many private schools have some heavy, campus-wide alcohol restrictions and these should be respected. Call them up and check before you bring 51 kegs and the Miller Lite Girls to Messiah College's game versus College Of The Sacred Bleeding Heart. However, I've never been to any holy roller school that didn't have some rich alumnus partying at his motor home. Cap'n Cat just drags the cooler over there and becomes as untouchable as him!

So, anyway, Cap'n Cat encourages you to take the time at least once this year to pay a smaller college a visit. You won't be sorry and you'll likely be surprised at the talent on the field and the smaller school game atmosphere.

Safe travels!!!!!!!!

I'm from the Cedar Rapids area, so I am all for supporting Coe! They have themselves a pretty darn good D-III football team. Plus their campus is beautiful, I call it the Little UNI.

It's a little hard to support other programs when I'll be attending every UD game this season. That said, I support Wesley College (D-III) from afar.

Hey, a portion of my UD season ticket jack goes directly in the West Chester (D-II) coffers. I suppose that counts for something, much to my chagrin. I'd rather keep my dollars in state.

Good Job Cappy. Showin the love. Have a brother in law 1 year out at Capital in ohio, now doing a little DE coaching for the Crusaders. The wifes cousin is now starting foe Perennial power Mount Union.

Here in Iowa have former DII foe Morningside(now DIII) and UNO for some sue bashing later on in the season. or a short trip to see defending DII national champs NWMSU bearkats(plus they have a great bar in Merrysville) Love the small college atmosphere baby!!!!

Thanks, 95r.

Another reason to support the IIs and IIIs and such is that they are just like us, thirsting for more pub and respect in a world dominated by Buckeyes and Wolverines and Trojans. I-AA ain't the only "black hole" in college football.

Football is football. I love big time college football, and small ball, and even a great High School game. Lets love them all for what they are. I think the Cap'n in sayin, don't be a DI-AA or nothing fan, just like we hate the BCS or nothing fans:cool:

I love D-III ball. We live pretty close to Widener and Wesley, which usually field strong teams. Our son also played D-III ball in Tennessee for two years and loved it.

Hey cap'n your plug last year convinced me to go out and tailgate at a OUA game up here in Ontario (I had been going to games). What a blast.

It was lonely at the first one, had some basketball players working crowd control help me get the grill out of my truck. A few students stopped by but the hit was when the athletic director stopped by and thanked me (he had heard I was there).

Fast forward one year to the first game of the year up here on monday and they had roped off a tailgating section for the football alumni and parents of players and we had over 30 people tailgating. They are planning on reserving the whole lot for tailgating this weekend. Kids a plenty running around on the hillside opposite the stands I really like small college football.

Support the small schools nearby and they will support you...eh

Thanks Cap'n

The overwhelming majority of college football games I've attended in my lifetime are Division III. In fact, the only DII game I've ever seen was a C.W. Post (DII) - Alfred (DIII) game in '93. Perry Klein was Post's QB if anybody remembers him.

My last DIII game was Moravian-Susquehanna in Bethlehem in '99.

There are no small colleges within a reasonable drive of Tucson or Phoenix. Therefore, I haven't seen a lower level game in years.

As in the past I will support my local home town D-3 team the Wesley Wolverines. These boys were totally screwed by the Mid West liars, Wisoncsin La Crosse. Officials at Wisconsin La Crosse told Wesley to bring regular cleats to their D-3 playoff game as "their field was heated and covered and regular field conditions would prevail". Wesley is a private school and the players buy their own shoes and they brought what the Wisconsin LaCrosse officials said would work.

What they found was that the field was FROZEN and the cleats they brought were totally ineffective. Meanwhile the Wisconsin - La Crosse team had shoes perfectly suited for a frozen field IMAGINE THAT!!!!

The Wisconsin LaCrosse administrators had totally lied and they won by a significant margin. Of Course they lost the next week but the damage had already been done. NO WESLEY ADMINISTRATOR OR COACH will ever believe the liars of Wisconsin - La Crosse again. This story is well known and if Wisconsin - La Crosse comes to Delaware expect a "chilly" reception.

In another post, somebody said that public colleges such as the UW schools or NJ state colleges or SUNY schools should not be DIII. I couldn't agree more!

Not too many sub D-I football-playing schools out in these parts. In fact, the only college that plays below D-I in Louisiana is Louisiana College in Pineville, LA. I get my regular kicks on Friday nights with high school, Saturdays with LSU and Nicholls State and then Sundays always bring me back to the real world watching the Saints.

AMEN. We have our Moravian and Muhlenberg Colleges (D-III) locally and nearby are D-II East Stroudsburg and Kutztown Universities. All four play very good football, with ESSU picked to challenge for the D-II championship this year.
