Murphy emerged late in the 2012 season as one of the team's top young defensive linemen, making four tackles with a pair of sacks in six contests. He had a pair of sacks in his first collegiate appearance, a win over Monmouth. Murphy earned his first career start at Brown. He possesses the speed to be an effective rusher off the edge and the size to be a run-stopper.
At Boiling Springs HS
Murphy was a three-time all-league selection, earning second-team honors in each of his last two seasons at Boiling Springs HS. He was elected captain of the team as a senior and was named a second-team linebacker on the All-Sentinel team. A three-sport athlete, Murphy was a standout on the wrestling and tack and field teams as well. In wrestling, Murphy won a district title as a senior and was a two-time all-state and three-time first-team all-league pick. He was named team captain as a senior and led his squad to a state runner-up finish. Murphy’s team won a pair of district team championships. He finished seventh in the state individually as a senior. In track and field, Murphy was a two-year team captain and finished second in the district in the 110m hurdles as a junior. He had five top seven district finishes during his career.

Logan Thomas Murphy is the son of Scott Murphy and Angela Murphy-Morgan and has a younger brother. His uncle, Brian Murphy, was a wrestler at Notre Dame. He is enrolled in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences.
