ISUMatt
September 2nd, 2006, 10:13 PM
Fact is we lost because our SPECIAL TEAMS allowed 14 points..Our defense was better, our offense was better, we lost due to a punt return and a fumbled kickoff, not a 2pt conversion!

I disagree here....
There is a HUGE difference in being aggressive and being crazy....
IF what is being typed is true....offense and defense is better (playing better than K-State)....just special teams is lacking.....I go to OT every time.
Really wished IlSU would have pulled it out.
skinny_uncle
September 2nd, 2006, 10:30 PM
OT was not guaranteed. KSU still had over 3 minutes to go get a field goal to win.
If Ill State had converted, it would have put more pressure on KSU than a tie score would and Denver Johnson would have probably have gotten a raise.
Chi Panther
September 2nd, 2006, 10:33 PM
so giving them the ball back down a point with 3 mins left is better....I'm just saying that I would have played the percentages in this situation....

September 2nd, 2006, 10:37 PM
We played the last friggin 3 minutes minus Laurent Robinson (cramps) and Pierre Jackson played sparingly. I know many of you will prognosticate and wudda, shudda, coulda, but Denver Johnson and the Birds played their @$$es off for 57 minutes and had a chance to win minus two starting WR.
Take the friggin' win and get out of there, or go down trying without risking further injury to your team.
It's one game, and I'm glad he didn't mortgage our season for a 1-A win rather than focus on the task of winning the GFC and the National Championship.
skinny_uncle
September 2nd, 2006, 10:46 PM
Uh, I would rather be tied and have to stop KSU than be down one and have to stop KSU.
All scenarios lead to having to stop KSU. You left out the possibilty of having a 1 point lead and stopping them (which Ill State had done most of the night).

Coach Kill had a simlar situation at Northern Illinois in 2004 and went for the 2 point conversion. It failed and all the Monday QBs pointed out how dumb it was. You roll the dice. If the conversions work, the coach is brilliant. I don't like going for the tie on the road and then playing OT fighting against the other teams home crowd along with everything else. I think you go for the win when you have the chance. I see it as aggressive, not crazy. If it's crazy, so be it. Maybe that craziness is why I like the Gateway.

Given the situation with the WRs, I'm glad Denver went for it. Know it's disappointing for some fans, but I think we are in for a BIG season from the Redbirds. I say go for 2 in that situation. I would expect Farley to do the same thing if it happens in a couple weeks against Iowa State. You play to win and ISUMatt is right, you don't mortage the season on 1 game.
Now if the GFC title is on the line at the Dome and Denver goes for 2, it is a mistake.

I can't wait to see this game! Sounds like our first real test as an I-AA school. I am going to visit the school homepage and try to find any MB sites for ISU. Hope to be there in person, but retail gets busy stocking up for the holidays!
Go Bears!
