A game on CSTV...so I am sure there'll be a few of us who are able to catch this game...
Jacksonville St vs Furman
First question about CSTV...why do they list Jacksonville St as 'Jack St'...they referring to Jackson St?!? Of course last year, they called Southeastern Lousiana, "Southeast" Louisiana...

One first down then punt for Furman. JSU follows with a three-and-out. Not much offense so far by either team.

Furman moved quickly down to the JSU 34 but penalties and missed passes forced another punt. JSU takes over at its own 5.
Renaldo Gray has come close to throwing INTs a few times already.

The Furman offense looks like its running in slow motion. Defense looks about as expected, but if we can't run the ball on JSU, then its gonna be a long season. Props to JSU though, they are tough in all aspects of the game.

I don't believe our defense is that bad. You won't see this much speed many times this year. App, GSU, Chatt, and maybe WCU will be the only other ones compariable.

It was a great game. JSU's only TD was by their defense... Furman's D really stepped up, and aside from the easy FG miss special teams was OK.
So far as the Furman offense... it wasn't great but there were some positives. Gipson came up huge on that last FU drive. He hadn't done too much until then but the coaches stuck with him. LaFrance didn't have many touches but he looked good. Gray and Sorrells both flashed their ability, though overall the passing game was fairly quiet.

With today's travel cost, I don't think we will be changing leagues. We try to get in the SOCON before the OVC but we we're not wanted. SOCON football is better (at least at the top), but the other sports are close.

Leave it to a fan of a team that had Foster playing quarterback last season, to say Gray is not a QB. I'll take Gray at 75 percent over Foster as a quarterback. We will see what you think on November 11th.
As far as Furman looking terrible. we held one of the nations best backs a Payton canidate under 100 yards and zero touchdowns. We also won playing 16 freshmen. On offense Stepp was the only senior that played most of the game. This team is different. But I think we will be just fine.

Funny, since while Foster was at QB, you guys lost to us...I'll take Foster. Of course it doesn't matter now since you can't compare the two (different offenses). I'll bet Travis Clark could teach old Gray a thing or two though.

Cocky do you really think the Gamecocks played terrible? Your receivers made acrobatic catches your QB was on the mark most of the game. And I was impressed with your defensive team speed. If you were looking for bigger numbers on offense, I think that was the role of the Furman defense. I was very happy to see the intensity on defense that Furman displayed. I thought last season JSU played a more physical game. This time Furman laid the hits.
About Foster, I'm not saying Foster wasn't a bad QB. He was just limited in his skills… mainly passing. Gray can pass and run. And as far as Travis Clark showing Gray a thing or two about playing QB? Lets see Clark played in two games last season at USM and he had very impressive stats. 2 for 3 for 16 yards. In high school he completed 95 of 169 passes for 1,685 yards, threw 17 touchdowns and had nine interceptions.
Considering Gray threw for 2,431 yards at Greenwood High and 3,061 yards of total offense in his senior season. I think he knows how to be a QB. If not Jordan Sorrells who passed for 9,405 yards and 105 touchdowns in high school can help him out.

Do you see one Furman fan on here fretting about Renaldo Gray? No, you don't. We have the utmost confidence in him as the signal caller. He made some very nice plays yesterday and smooth throws.

They haven't played Jax State since 2002. We were a different squad then, and they may not be entirely aware of the change. The OVC titles didn't just come from the move to a weaker conference; the team has improved greatly, too. PaladinFan, if you think bringing up ancient history is relevant or worth the trouble, tell GSU fans their team looked terrible against Jax State in 1992.

I had tough time on my poll with this one. Was this a case of Furman not playing to the level most people thought they were at or was it a case of Jacksonville playing better than most thought? A little bit of both, but I would say it was more due to the fact of JSU playing better than most thought. That JSU team I saw yesterday is a heckuva lot better than the one I saw in the playoffs a couple of years ago. JSU's defense is going to be very tough.
Furman stuggled to get it's offense going (some due to JSU's D, some to the fact we're still rusty), but FU's defense is a LOT better than the one we had last year at this time. JSU's only TD came from their defense (both teams had a TD taken a way by the refs though).
I don't think FU should drop considering they beat a very good team, and the first game is always a little nuts. I don't think you can move JSU into the top 25 after a loss, but they certainly played like a top 25 team.
Good luck to JSU the rest of the way. Both teams should be ok, if they can find a little more offense.

Yes, Furman was a bit rusty, but you didn't see missed assignments, overthrown balls, botched coverages, etc. that come with a first game. Furman looked good but Jacksonville State is a lot better than I thought they'd be. That score was close because JSU kept it close, not because Furman didn't play to their potential.

Gray's just getting his college career started guys. I never said once that Foster wasn't a good football player. I responded to the comment that Gray was no QB. Once Gray is healthy I'm guessing the UNC game I think you guys will see why BL recruited him. At the time Chaz Williams was running your offense and believe it our not Gray was being compared to Chaz by many. By the time Furman plays the Eagles all this will be old news Gray will either be the player they thought he would be. Or Sorrells a true pro style QB wil be calling plays.
I just get tired of the constant banter that no Furman player can compare to a GSU player. Foster should do well at his new position, but I think you guys are drinking alot of Eagle Creek Kool-Aid if you think the new offense is gonna set the world a fire in the first season. Look how long it took APP and Richie to click.

Oh, Gray runs a 4.37 40?

Offense wasn't in sync, but our defense definitely wasn't terrible. JSU has a good defensive team. Guess we'll see how you guys fare against football powerhouse Central Conn. State next weekend.
Yeah JSU is a real powerhouse!

I'd like to defend you here bud, but JSU didn't even make the playoffs last year. When JSU did make the playoffs they were one and done both years. With that said, I think this JSU team is much better than the one we saw last year.
I keep waiting for FU fans to learn that you just can't argue with Georgia Southern fans. It's not worth your energy, and listenting to their arguments will make your head hurt.
The fact is no one has seen one full game from Grey yet. Not to mention he was hurt. Debating Grey vs Foster is just stupid because they're two totally different players, and they were both asked to do different things.

My bad, a 4.36. Do NFL scouts stopwatches count?

About half way down.

I had tough time on my poll with this one. Was this a case of Furman not playing to the level most people thought they were at or was it a case of Jacksonville playing better than most thought? I had Jacksonville State in my top 25 in the preseason poll. It will be fun to find out as the season plays out.
We have top 25 or better talent, but the other parts are our problem.

Chaz was a good QB and had good size at 5-10, 213. Gray is bigger (6-0, 238 runs my guess a 4.6) in high school Gray displayed similar running skills but with a better arm. Rushed for 630 yards to finish with 3,061 yards in total offense in his only season at quarterback. The comparsion came from sports writers and recruiting pubs.

It sounds like this was a hell of a game. I didn't get to follow it because I was on vacation, and watching football while at the beach wasn't going to fly with the better half. :smiley_wi
You guys will have to excuse a few GSU fans. I think we are all excited to get the season started, and it was hard to watch everyone else get to play this weekend. I have no idea where this huge surge of ego is coming from. Who can possibly know Anything about what kind of GSU team we will see this year?!?

Good game. Furman had trouble running the ball. Need the OL to jel soon (though with Kivett out for a few weeks that will be hard). Lots of new parts there. Gray looked hobbled out there with his sprained foot. He wasn't as quick as he was last year.
On a bright note, the defense looked phenominal. The new DL coach has really helped the DL vs the pass. Got good pressure on the QB. Overall a real good game from the defense.

Well I'm sure with App's luck, Mr Kivett will be back in time for his KBS visit.

I think the oline did fine…JSU plays alot of guys in the box and their team speed did a good job of taking away the outside game until the 4th quarter. BL was quoted as saying "we're so used to getting 10-13 yard runs, in this game we got 4 and 5 yard gaines." Kivett is listed day-to-day and is listed as the backup I don;t think we will see him until UNC or Western. Thornburg has replaced Kivett, Thornburg was pre-season SoCon I think last season but was injured most of the year.
We are playing alot of young players on the oline but oline is usually a position that you never have to worry about with Furman.
