"Area Fans Miss The Passion" (Albany)

On Saturday we will miss out on something.

In the Capital Region, we see the best horse race meeting in the land, fine mid-major college basketball, and a storied NFL franchise's training camp. ... (blah blah balh).

But we can't find a reason for college football to excite us. On autumn Saturdays, we will not be as stoked as a tabby on catnip, as Tigers fans are in Auburn, where they start tailgating in the Loveliest Village on the Plains as early as Wednesday.

...

Our hearts and minds will not perform aerials as others' will in Austin, Ann Arbor, Athens and their environs.

..

This is not to devalue the experience of watching Union College or RPI, two of the country's better Division III football programs, play. And this is not to disparage UAlbany's success. If you attended one of those schools or have a child who does, you may enjoy their games.

But the experience cannot compare to the pleasure of walking, say, Notre Dame's campus the morning of a game and feeling such excitement you'd swear somebody implanted an electrical cable in your spine.
